I think you need to distinguish between the 'war' genre and the 'military' genre. THE CAINE MUTINY is out of place here, and probably PATTON is too.
But I admire the historical and geographic range of this list. Given all these past wars, why not include a future war? STARSHIP TROOPERS, for example.
Patton and Caine Mutiny I believe are properly placed here. I cant bring myself to add starship Troopers. I like that movie alot, owever it is Science Fiction.
I think any movie that takes place in and around a specific war or wars is valid for this list. That makes Patton and The Caine Mutiny viable candidates.
As far as Starship Troopers goes I find it really odd that Bertie suggests this today because last night while I was lying in bed I had the exact same thought that it could be considered a War movie as well.
The reason I wouldn't add it to this list though is because I wouldn't think that it falls in the top tier of war films. Although if someone really wants to vote it their number one War film you probably should oblige them.
I've been away a couple days, and thanks Dan for filling in for me.
I confess that I had my tongue in my cheek when suggesting ST for the list. As I would have were I to suggest STAR WARS. But this discussion has got me thinking more seriously about science-fictional wars in movies.
It's curious (or should I say disturbing) how many sf movies have war as part of their plot, but very few of them are 'future war' movies in the intensive way that most of the movies on this list are 'past war' movies. In fact ST is the only one I can think of offhand.
In sf literature, the future-war novel to read is Joe Haldeman's THE FOREVER WAR, which would make a great movie.
I've heard things about that novel. I think I'll chweck our local bookstore here and check if they have it. If not I'll order it. I must confess that I was not really thinking future wars in this poll. However, if there is some film which has been made that I find to be as signifigant as the ones on this poll, I'll have to add it.
Jeff, even though I've already cast my vote and I wouldn't change it if I could, 'Breaker' Morant needs to be added to this list. It was a very good film and qualifies, as much as most of the films on this list, as a War movie.
This was the toughest one so far. Very little seperates 10 or so of these movies from the best. I picked Full Metal Jacket, but could see any of these others in the top slot:
Apocalypse Now
The Deer Hunter
Ran
Das Boot
Braveheart
Saving Private Ryan
Bridge On The River Kwai
Although not a great movie, I loved "A Midnight Clear".

I would almost add it if I thought someone would. Though its a fun movie, I dont see how anyone would ever vote for it. I find it impossible.

The Forever War is a great book!
Well, its been settled then as far as that goes. I'll buy it. I respect you and Bertie too much to pass it up.
Y Thanks, Jeff! You won't regret it. :-)
If I do regret it, I'll hold you personally responsible!! (ha ha, i'm kidding)
Yeah, I wouldn't add it unless someone specifically tells you they want to vote for it as their favorite War film.
True that.
You're right, it does belong Dan. I'll fix it up bro.

I voted for Paths of Glory
i recently seen Paths Of Glory again on AMC. I was very impressed with the ending. That is a very powerful film.

It's good to see you pick a Kubrick movie. I think I voted for Apocalypse Now myself.
Am I the only one who has noticed that a lot of the same types of polls that are being posted on Listology have been popping up on Yahoo lately?
I haven't noticed.
Dude, we need to see Bridge on the River Kwai here!
Saving my vote,
Johnny Waco
Sorry Johnny, I had a mind fart. Of course that belongs. I'm changing it now...
