_TARGET: To make a fair and to have only the best movies up for vote

may i suggest a clockwork orange? i'm actually really surprised it hasn't been suggested yet.
2001: A Space Odyssey
ben hur maybe?
I gotta suggest Ben-Hur. A good start might be all the movies on the AFI 100 greatest + what you already have up.
Rainman
Requiem For A Dream
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Thanks.
I suggest putting in Planes Trains & Automobiles
Tough call but today at 6:02 PM, whilst dealing with a nasty head-cold and getting ready to watch The Cranes Are Flying, I would have to choose The Hunchback Of Notre Dame cus I'm feeling the whole "world hates me, subjugated and tortured ball of mysogony" every time I look in the mirror and see my puffy face and sneeze up green phlegm which hurts my swollen nose. (that would be the 39 version)
T'ho
:?)
Pulp Fiction
Wouldn't one have to establish the "best movie genre" before a single movie could be chosen "Best Movie Ever?" For example, there are great comedies that could easily be chosen but how does one choose between a great comedy and a great drama? We're talking apples and oranges here. What makes a movie great anwyay? Direction? Camera work? Editing? Music score? Acting? Casting? Writing?
I would suggest that categories be established first. Movies are then added to these catagories per recommendations; the movie with the most catagory listings would then be titled, "Best Movie Ever". (or something like that... from a guy who's already stated he knows nothing about movies or how they're made).
My suggestions would be but no limited too:
Direction
Score
Casting
Acting
Cinematography
Script
Storyline
Location
Your bring up an interesting consideration. While it might not apply to Rushmore's intentions for the list, it IS awfully difficult to pick the best of two vastly different but equally masterful films of different genres.
For example, I often wonder: which is better, the funniest comedy of all time (Monty Python and the Holy Grail) or the most perfectly plotted movie of all time (Chinatown)? How can one really compare the two? Chinatown has a better script, acting and direction, but if the supreme measure of a comedy is it's laughs, then Holy Grail is king! I like your idea that 'best movies' lists could be seperated into a few genre lists in order for them to be more effective.
You know... I really don't think it can be done. You mention "M.P's Holy Grail" as the funniest comedy of all time yet I have never been a Monty Python fan. For some, great comedy could be slapstick while others prefer situation. The Three Stooges and Seinfeld are both great examples of time-tested comedy very different yet equally alive and well. Perhaps and i'd imagine probable, ones' sense of humor is related to their social surroundings, their life experiences and parental influence.
Meaning of course, that what makes us laugh, cry, dream, or inspires us to action varies from person to person.
Indeed.
thats true also. your right. going to the point you made about being able to laugh, cry, dream inspire varies from person to person. well my point also ties in to the point you made about the persons social surroundings.
you could take some one who has been in a war. a terrible heartbreaking time im sure. Now if that person sees war being depicted in a comical fasion, depending on their social surroundings and up bringing they either are offended or take it as a light hearted joke. but because of your experiences and feelings toward the subject that can change. And that is what makes film in all forms work on so many levels.
thats true, that is a near impossible. Anyone would find it difficult to take 2 different genres and decide which of its representives are better.
But..
i think like everything in life there is no right answer. if you ask some one who is into comedies which is better / more important, they're going to say in case of your suggestion "holy grail" but if you ask a fan of serious, well thought out movies the answer will be completely different. everything is based on personal opinon and by those standereds it is impossible (and kind of wrong) to say that some one is right or wrong in their opinon.
Yes, you are correct. The pursuit of objective quantification of a film's mettle is a futile one.
you have a good point but what i was trying to get was the personal opinon of the listology users. like they say what their favourite movie and i put it up their. but i will re-think my idea.
Rush... no, don't change anything! I was simply stating what most already know anyway. If people are interested in complicating the whole matter by breaking it down so, then maybe it would be entertaining to see an outcome and whether or not it'd be different from people's personal favorites.
A few great movies in the "cannibal genre" for anyone planning a "dinner and a movie" night this weekend:
The Cook,The Thief His Wife and Her Lover (stir-fried satire)
Delicatessan (charbroiled black comedy)
Eating Raoul (chickenfried cult classic)
Enjoy!

You know me, I'm gonna ask you to throw American Beauty up there so I, and only I, can vote on it :-)
