Are Stereotypes Deserved?

I'm taking the responses to this seriously. Comments are appreciated!

It's often the negative traits in people that stand out. For example, the 'fact' that blondes are dumb, old people can't drive, etc. There are hardly any positive stereotypes, since they tend to be based on prejudice.

Sure there are...Asians are smart, good at videogames, Jews are good with finances, Black people are good at sports...it only becomes negative when people use them in comparison - i.e. "The Milwaukee Bucks are terrible because they start two white guys". There's a true statement if I ever heard one.

'Asians are smart, good at video games' can also be said as 'Asians are nerds'. True though, there are a few good stereotypes, but just a few come to mind.

You should go and see The Breakfast Club. It's a movie about stereotypes in society.

I will make sure to do so and report back my thoughts!

I think there's a small grain of truth. But, you can't apply a stereotype to an individual you meet within that group (IE: (I'm making these number up): it could be that 6% of black men steal versus 2% of white men - but that still means that any black man you meet is very unlikely to be a thief).

If I correctly understand what you are saying, then I agree. The only real problem with stereotypes is that everyone has their own opinion on the stereotype, so it can't necessarily be proved whether or not it is true (if that makes any sense). What I mean to say, is that if you call one homosexual a "fag" he may laugh at your face and say "Your damn straight!"... or take you to court. It really does depend on the person. If there is ONE race that I do respect above all others, though, it is the Jewish race (I'm not Jewish btw). For THOUSANDS of years they have been discriminated against, made slaves, the fucking HOLOCAUST...I mean, they have been through some tough shit! Then the average black person comes along and complains about his/her life sucks and it's all the white mans fault, or that another race (usually white) is being racist towards African-Americans for them not getting a job or some bullshit like that. Guys and gals, please don't start calling me a racist for making an observation. What I am sick of, is using your skin color to get into a college, or get a job. But of course, the opposite happens frequently too.

The only problem is (sorry for veering off the point), there is a reason these stereotypes exist. Why are trailer trash called trailer trash? Because they live in a trailer...and don't pick up after themselves...duh. But now white people who live in the South (U.S.) are stereotypically called white trash. Although I am sure many are, there is a number of them who are NOT.

That is where the problem arrives...is there a correct answer?

And race is not the only stereotype I want to bring up. Another stereotype is "Nerds don't get laid" etc. which is obviously false...at least I'm pretty certain it is XD! Others include "Men don't show their emotions, while women never stop showing theirs." Both of those I agree with, but I also very much disagree with...
