Notes on There Will Be Blood

Eli (christianity)- shallow, attention-seeking, desperate to convince himself and others of god's reality
Daniel (capitalism)-provides education, bread to city, but also greed, immorality, destruction
Daniel fake brother and eli both have it coming to an extent (not that Daniel doesn't take it too far)

When fundamentalist religion and capitalism run rampant collide, there will be blood.

Daniel's soul is poisoned after several events which gradually wear him down and break his heart (especially when he finds out his brother, the only person h'd ever opened up to, is just like everyone else. He grows more and more to "see the evil in everyone" Though HW was used from the beginning, he still obviously cared for him. Eventually that ability to love was crushed under the weight of greed and alienation.

Eli is just as bad. Though religion that he offers has some benefit, he, like daniel with capitalism, take it too far and turns in into a source of corruption and greed. They both expose each other for who they really are, and ultimately both reach rock bottom.
