A Look at the Independence Bowl

  • The Independence Bowl is played annually at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana.
  • The bowl was named for the fact that it was inaugurated in the United States bicentennial year, 1976.
  • In 1990, the contest became one of the earliest college bowl games to use a title sponsor, becoming the Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl. The name gave rise to the term Weedwhacker Bowl, which is sometimes used to refer to a second-rank bowl game, especially by fans of top-ranked teams who expect their squads to compete in BCS contests.
  • On May 21, 2009, Advocare became the fifth title sponsor since the bowl's inception. The bowl was then renamed the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl.
  • Since 1998, the game has normally featured a matchup between teams representing the Big 12 and the SEC.
  • Beginning in 2010, the Independence Bowl will feature the third highest ranked team from the Mountain West Conference and the seventh highest ranked team from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
