Why music today is not as Good as music from back when

  • This is in no way meant to offend anyone; everyone is entitled to thier own opinion. Including me. So these are my opinions and views on Popular music today. So, without further blabbering:
  • -Everybody's about image: True, rockers and musicians of the past were big on image too, but honestly, even back then it wasn't near as bad as now. Nowadays you can land a career on looking good and faking your way through the musical part of being a musican. Or you can surround yourself in beautiful women and expensive cars and jewelry all masking the fact that you have little to no musical talent.
  • -Nobody can come up with anything original: Either its all been done,(HIGHLY doubtful) or kids today just aren't trying too hard to come up with anything new. You even see little pop stars mimicing people as recent as Britney Spears. Marylin Manson wishes he was Alice Cooper, while Justin Timberlake tries as hard as he can to be Michael Jackson. What happened to really exiting new groundbreaking artists like pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and Beatles and Elvis and way too many others to even go on. You hardly even hear a band now days with a unique sound. which brings me to my next point...
  • -Everything sounds the same: Now, not literally, and I know this has always been around, but now it seems all these whiny punks who think thier badass all hit the same chords and scream about the same stuff in the same voice. And I can't even tell one rapper from another. They all follow the same formula: Girls, bling, cars, drugs, and why whitey hates me. Or in Eminem's case, why everyone hates him.
  • -Videos: Seems bands and artists are far more worried about thier videos and looking good than sounding good and doing good shows. They shell out videos, focusing all thier energies on the videos, while thier concerts lack, musically and presentationally. What happened to legendary live shows like Pink Floyd, Kiss, Alice Cooper and Sabbath? You never hear about over-the-top exiting live shows any more. Why should they? They can waste thier time lip-syncing in thier Music Videos.
  • -Songs have no meaning: GENERALLY. Every now and again you'll come across some good ones, but all in all, it just isn't heart-filled. Those pop girls can sing thier lungs out but it doesn't mean a darn thing if they didn't write thier songs. Then they guys who do write thier songs just whin about being a stupid kid or just make it sound as if they bought a rhyming dictionary and worked it out there. What happened to greats like Lennon/McArtney, John Fogerty, Freddie Mercury, Bob Dyaln, Bob Marley, and the boys from Led Zeppelin who wrote thier own songs and wailed thier hearts out into thier song?
  • -No more good solos: Don't get me wrong, there are excellant jam bands out there I love. But you never hear about them. They only bands that get respect are the little Good Charlotte's and Blink 182's and pop stars and rappers that can't solo worth anything. Even rockers today are lacking in the skill. Back when, you hardly ever heard a song without a solo of some sort, and it more often that not was moving and good. Now, you don't. I saw a Justin Timberlake video where in place of the guitar solo, they gave Justin some time to beat-box, not too well either. Very sad really.

Altough I agree with your rant in spirit, I disagree with you on your main point. You must realize that most of what you hear on the radio and read about is corporately controlled. Rockers of today need to seek out fresh and exciting new music. There is a butt load of it out there. If anyone out there is judging modern music by what is on MTV and read in Rolling Stone, then you really have no idea about all the great indie rock, punk and underground rap available. A lot of the artist you mentioned, i.e. Led Zeppelin, in my opinion, were a little overrated and bloated too. The Brittney's and NSync are neccesary evils. So leave that mindless, mundane, fecal matter to the masses. Music today rocks. It just is sometimes a little harder to find. If want some recomendations, e-mail me with your taste, and I'll get ya started.

That's completely understandable you feel that way, but again, I disagree. Obviously, I disagree that Led Zep and the lot were overrated, if look at it from a musicans point of view, Zep's solo's are just astonishing and Jimmy Oage was master of the riff, and Bonzo was an amazing drummer, they were all joined in same thought process. It like they were reading each others mind how perfectly thier solos and parts weaving in out. I could go on all day...

But you see, I don't like much rap or punk, and I have no clue what the hell indie rock is. You already read how I feel about Rap, and Punk is too simple. Not like Beatles beautiful kind of Simple, but like I don't know what the hell I'm doing simple. Like I've never even looked at a music staff simple. Like I know three damn chords and triads so there fore I can get away with an easy song and a shitty, highly distored, distasteful solo. At least that's my view.

Indie rock bands are usually bands not signed to major labels. So they are independent of the business, and more importantly, creative confines of coporate rock. Most corporate rock, imho, is way to contrived, and produced, to show any genuine emotion. I invite you to listen to some indie, punk and rap, before you dismiss it as 'simple'. And not that stuff on MTV and in Rolling Stone. Here is a random spattering of some of the more 'complex' indie, punk and rap I like. Sunny Day Realestate, The Mars Volta, Jurassic 5, Fugazi, Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine. If you listen to any of these, and still think today's music is simple... well I guess we all have our opinions.

As for three cord rock... What in the heck is wrong with three cord rock? Most of the greatest songs of all time where three cord songs. Louie louie, ooh ooh, I gotta go... yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah....

Guess the situation hasn't improved much, 6 years on. Daresay it's worsened. A hell lot. But thanks to the wonderful thing called internet (we keep forgetting just how new a social medium it is), there are alternate ways to discover great music.

Niice. You obviously listen to a lot of underground music. It's funny, I hadn't realised Joanna Newsom wasn't original. Silly me!

That was from the user neptune not me btw if you're bothered. I left myself logged in. Though I have similar sentiments. If you want guitar solos and blistering originality listen to Cassandra Gemmini by The Mars Volta. That's from 2005.

The person who made this list is an idiot
