South Pacific was the number one album from the end of 1958 and all through 1959, hence the year 1959's omission from the list.
Up until the end of the 60s, the list is dominated by The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Cliff Richard and/or the Shadows, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, and albums would remain on the top of the charts for weeks, and often, if replaced at the top, would return to the top for an additional number of weeks.
After early 1989, compilation albums were no longer included in the main album chart, and thus entered into a separate chart.
