- "Chick Flicks" ~ I think the term "chick flick" was originally concocted and perpetuated by a group of men who didn't like to watch anything but brainless film fare, like action films and their ilk, and when they ended up with girlfriends and wives they decided to marginalize films with deep emotion by calling them "chick flicks". They had been socialized from years of watching films that didn't make you think. The concept was later moved into the mainstream by the entertainment industry as a short-hand way of referring to films that were popular with women. I think today it has been rendered meaningless by women who co-opted the idea into something positive and by the men who decided to expand the definition of "chick flick" to include anything they didn't feel like seeing. I've heard so many people use that term loosely. I had a thought that maybe you could turn it around and call the antethisis of the "chick flick" the "dick flick."

- "Independent" Film ~ I managed to find a few loose definitions of "independent" film. I was amazed that searching on the phrase "what is independent film" on Google returned so few results that actually provided an answer to this question. In most cases it was used rhetorically. Anyhoo...
- Here's one:
- An 'independent film' is a film that is not produced by a major Hollywood studio. Most films that have appeared in movie theatres throughout the years have been made by one of the major Hollywood movie film studios. Recently, films written and directed by individual screenwriters and directors who have found money to fund their projects on their own have been gaining more popularity and success in mainstream theaters. These area called 'independent films.' This definition was found here.
- This answer begs the question (at least for me) what are the "major Hollywood film studios?"
- Here's another answer:
- It used to be a film produced outside of the traditional studios (although the traditional studios have all created divisions that deal with non-traditional types of films). So the best current definition might be this: An independent film is one that appeals to sophisticated audiences, usually produced outside the traditional studio system. Independent movies usually represent a sharp contrast to the large budget movies that represent mainstream movies today. That definition was found here.
- Unfortunately I don't care for that answer much because it lets the definition of independent film be co-opted by the studios. Sure if the studios want to go out and make movies that come across as "independent" films or what "independent" films used to be like that's fine. But don't kid yourself that it's an "independent" film. Just because it looks, tastes and smells like "independent" doesn't make it independent (to me).
- I really prefer drawing the line at that first definition. Now if someone could tell me what they specifically mean by "major Hollywood film studios" I'd be all set.

You keep teasing me with these lists that aren't off the ground yet! :-) Not to be a broken record, but I'm looking forward to seeing how this one unfolds too.
See it only took me 8 months to flesh this one out a little more. Not bad, if I do say so myself. :-)
So I should look for you to finish this list up around June of '03, huh?
That's the fun thing. My lists are never done. :-)
Well don't make me wait too long for what I expect to be a merciless rant on "Deceitful Movie Trailers". I'm particularly looking forward to that one.
I had a thought that maybe you could turn it around and call the antethisis of the "chick flick" the "dick flick."
Ha! Good one. Although I cringe at some of the list titles that might result should this catch on.
