Author Comments:

This is going to be a comment generated list. Pick 2-3 movies that any movie-educated person really should have seen, and I'll start working my way down the list.

Seen:
Being There - enjoyable. Unfortunately I missed a couple of small sections in the middle due to the DVD I checked out of the library being scratched. It won't go on my list of absolute favorites ever, but there were a few scenes that had me laughing out loud.

Seven Samurai - definitely worth seeing. hard to believe I managed to go this long without seeing it.

12 Angry Men

1. Seven Samurai (Kurosawa)

2. Breathless (Godard)

3. Being John Malkovich & Being There (Jonze & Ashby)

Of these the only one I've seen is Being John Malovich (which I did like). I'll add the others, thanks.

The Maltese Falcon (Huston)
12 Angry Men (Lumet)
Bridge on the River Kwai (Lean)

I saw the Maltese Falcon in a theather a few years ago. I've added the other two though. thanks

AAA took mine (Seven Samurai) so I'll kick in Raise the Red Lantern because I'm the brokenest broken record you'll ever see.

My library doesn't seem to have Raise the Red Lantern!

Well, Amateur is my fav, but since it certainly has yet to enter the canon, I suppose it isn't necessary for any film fan to know about it. So...

Citizen Kane (Welles)
North by Northwest (Hitchcock)
Bringing Up Baby (Hawks)

If you're brave, Amateur could sub for one above. If you've already seen one of those three, then I'd chip in:

8 1/2 (Fellini) (This one also might take a bit of courage...)

BTW, Being There is only directed by Ashby. I think the Jonze was for Being John Malkovich.

Enjoy!

Whoops, I see you watched Citizen Kane already. Move 8 1/2 up then.

Sorry.

For your list, Amateur was directed by Hartley, and Raise the Red Lantern was directed by Zhang. (I think that's correct, because if I recall correctly, Chinese family names are said first, so Zhang Yimou's "last" name is Zhang. Or am I wrong? Can anyone confirm this?)

You have a great list shaping up here! Enjoy!

Thanks. I've put the first few on hold at my library so I'll start watching them as they come in.

Now, you do know that you should share your thoughts on the films you watch with the rest of us, don't you?

:)

Did you like Being There?

Shalom, y'all!

Have you seen Rear Window, yet?

nope

I've got a few more suggestions, if you'd like to hear them:

Ran (Kurosawa)
Manhattan (Allen)
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Demy)
Jules and Jim (Truffaut)
Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Nichols)
