Video Games That Have Consumed My Life

  • Earthbound - One of the quirkiest and, in my opinion, greatest RPGs ever brought out. I loved the strange plot, awkward characters, and...er...interesting music. I have come back to this game several times, and never yet has it disappointed me. Always will there be a place in my heart for Bubble Monkey and Dungeon Man.
  • Achaea (MUD)- My first real online RPG experience. Nothing can compare to the complexity and diversity a text-based environment can bring over all the great visual ones. I had the most active and interesting online social life while playing this game, due to player filtering that comes with having to type and read quickly. I spent several months of my life in front of this game.
  • Aetolia (MUD) - The same company and coding that made Achaea great made Aetolia interesting as well. It wasn't quite as interesting or actively updated as Achaea, and thus never caught my fancy as much...but it still ate a lot of my time. One of the geekiest experiences I have had in my life (I roleplayed a vampire)
  • Star Wars Galaxies - Really was a terrible, terrible game, and I'm thankful I only indulged for one summer. I do like Star Wars...and I did get to play my usual and preferred role as healer/medic...but generally, it just wasn't a very well-designed game. I didn't like the players that much, and it was easy and uneventful to max out your skills.
  • Battlefield 1942 - Did I mention I like history? Did I also mention I like shooters where you don't die after a single shot? I think that's why this game was appealing to me. I usually don't like this genre, but something about fighting over Kursk just got me into it.
  • Final Fantasy XI Many hours. Many many hours. Most of these many many hours were not spent having fun, but crafting and fishing. I met some great, neat people in FFXI, though after getting one class up to a high level and constantly being shunned by Japanese players, it got old.
  • Starcraft I really thought this game was the Bee's Knees for a long while. Purchased it the day it came out, got my friends to buy it, and I guess I am officially a stereotype *sigh*
  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - My favorite GBA game, I spent as much time unlocking ever class and perfecting each character's skills as I did playing the story mode.
  • The Monkey Island Series - I always come back to these games when I'm down, and I've surely beat each one at least 3 times. I still chuckle at the humor and bizarre puzzles (though Escape from Monkey Island wasn't great...), and find myself stumped at least once whenever I pick one of the games up several years after I last touched it.
  • Civilization II - I can't believe this game still comes back to haunt me. Without a doubt my favorite games for at least half a decade, my friends still have tournaments on occasion, even though we all own Civilization 3. History, strategy, Wonder videos...what more could you ask for?

Video games do not play a giant role in my life these days, but for many of those awkward, high school days, they were among my primary sources of entertainment. The following list includes games I have spent the most hours on, games I replayed several times, and games that I generally remember as playing a large role in certain points of my life. A brief description of why this game was so amazing to me at the time is also included.
