US Presidential Election Playlist

  • My list of tracks for November's elections.
  • Let's Impeach the President by Neil Young.
  • 2+2=5, Radiohead's anti-Bush song off "Hail to the Thief". "Are you such a dreamer / To put the world to rights?"
  • Maggie's Farm by Bob Dylan. Barack Obama identified it as his favorite Dylan song, and it's kinda politically-themed, with the message of "I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more."
  • Don't Believe the Hype by Public Enemy. An important song, I feel, in an age of "mavericks", Sarah Palin, extremely negative campaigns and the mass media swallowing and regurgitating it all. "False media / We don't need it do we?"
  • Masters Of War by Bob Dylan, since the Iraq War, Iran, Russia and Georgia etc have been big issues. As timely as it ever was.
  • He's Misstra Know It All by Stevie Wonder, which is about Richard Nixon and a great song too.
  • Men of Good Fortune by Lou Reed, for George Bush and John McCain.
  • Dontgetit, off Lil Wayne's recent album "Tha Carter III", which is a great song about gossip-mongering in a media that is more keen to focus on smears, gaffes, celebs and the Palins, and samples Nina Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood".
  • Brothers Gonna Work it Out by Public Enemy, which is a morale-boosting song to the black community about sorting out their problems, which electing a black president would obviously be a big step along the way towards.
  • The Big Three Killed my Baby by the White Stripes, who come from Detroit, and this is a song about the failing car industry, pretty timely in these economic downturn times.
  • Clampdown by the Clash, off their new album "Live at Shea Stadium", the Republican party being the clampdown. Also has a line about "Evil presidentes / Working for the clampdown".
  • Fight the Power by Public Enemy. I'm a big PE fan. This would be a good one for Barack to play at inauguration.
