Standout tracks are in bold. I particularly like the Kronos Quartet track.

Groovy! I love it when you post these lists!

Ya know, Sam Phillips sings back-up on most of Mark Heard's best albums, including huge chunks of Satellite Sky! I love her and have been lucky enough to see her in concert twice, once opening up for Bruce Cockburn.

Did you know she is married to T Bone Burnett, the producer behind the O Brother and Cold Mountain soundtracks (and a heck of an artist in his own right)?

:-) Thanks!

I liked the Phillips song so much, I was stunned to discover she's been around since the 80s and I haven't heard of her until now! I'm such a rube. Do you find that song representative of her work? If so, I'm definitely going to have to check out a complete album.

I also failed to realize she appears on Satellite Sky, which I'm really enjoying on first listen, by the way. I was interested to read in your review that you thought Heard's style might take a bit of adapting to. Of the music I've listened to based solely on your recommendation (Adam Again and Joseph Arthur), I think it's the most accessible.

And T Bone Burnett is married to Sam Phillips? Geez, that guy has a good life! :-)

Oh, and I didn't realize until after the fact that the the Kronos Quartet song is from Requiem for a Dream. Their stuff has never really grabbed me in the past, but I may have to revisit 'em. What a wonderful song (the only thing keeping Phillips from nabbing "favorite track" honors from this mix).

Two more fun Phillips' facts: She is the musical voice on the television show Gilmore Girls, and she has a semi-major role in Die Hard with a Vengeance as a mute (!) terrorist (!!).

Of course, T Bone also produced that Joseph Arthur album. What a small world.

I'm glad you're digging the Heard album. Some folks find the sound too dense, but since today's music is often mastered pretty dense, I don't think that bothers as many as it used to. The album's length and downbeat nature still do turn some off.

As you might imagine, I've yet to land a copy of this Uncut disc, but hopefully before long...

A mute terrorist! Now that's funny. I almost want to see the movie again just to check that out. Not quite, but almost.

Since it takes forever for lyrics to seep into my skull, I was only vaguely aware that the album was downbeat, since the music is up-tempo and even peppy at times. I'm sure eventually it will drag me into a pit of despair, as soon as I tune in to what he's actually saying. :-)

Bummer you still don't have the Nonesuch mix; it's a pretty good one. Did you get the LA issue/disc yet? It is one of my favorite mixes from the Uncut crew so far (I don't count the REM mix, since REM put it together rather than the Uncut editors, but I'd have to say it's my favorite of the lot).
