Ultimate Classic House List (1984-1989)

  1. First, this list won't contain only Chicago house, but also acid, garage, deep and even hip house. Shortly, every style of house that appeared before 1989.
  2. So let's say something about that "Classic House". Everyone knows that house was born in the warehouses of Chicago, in the early 80-ies. First pressed house record was probably Jesse Saunders' On & On, and first house album Z-Factor's Dance Party Album. Both were released in 1984. Acid house appeared in 1986 (Phuture - Acid Tracks), hip house in 1988 (The Beatmasters - Rok Da House) and deep and tribal house sometime between. Two main Chicago house labels were Trax Records and D.J. International, which released a huge number of classics.
  3. Classic House is one of those genres, which is hard to get into, unless you "been there" at the time. The reason is that it sounds terribly outdated these days (sometimes the bad vinyl pressings (which were very common back then) even more worsened the sound quality). But when you get into it, you discover a certain charm and the music just starts to grow on you.

Seriously...it's annoying. No comments?
This list is gold, and clearly a lot of time and effort went into making it, plus you clearly know your stuff, so well done and thanks for making this list! Keep it up on listology, there are probably a lot of lurkers here who do actually really appreciate the work just don't comment, so people please do comment on lists if you think it was worth reading or have a view point of your own! Once again, really cool list, I'll be sure to download a bunch of the tracks on here.

To tell you the truth, I didn't really expect any feedback or compliments for this list. As I said, this type of house music sounds really outdated and there aren't many people (not only on Listology) who can appreciate it. And if there are any interested, a large number of this tracks are practically unobtainable, so the lack of feedback is understandable (although the numbers show that a lot of people have seen it).

can i suggest one,

charles b - lack of love

Yeah, it's a very good track. One of the better acid tunes in fact. And it's not really a surprise, since it was produced by Adonis.
I'm going to add it (with a bunch of other tracks) later, when I find some time to reconstruct the greater part of the list

Am I the only one who does not recognize some of these classic cuts. I have a problem of only knowing cuts when I hear it. I don't know the name or the artist. Some are recognizable like Fingers Inc., Marshall Jefferson and Lil Louis but in reality when I heard these songs I was too caught up in sweaty freestyle dancing to listen to vocals or content.
Anyway my reason for posting is a question:
Does anyone know of a classic cut that just had percussion to a house beat. I know it in my head and can imitate it a little.. but hey, I'm online here. I featured a congo or bongo drum with a snare beat and had a bpm that got faster and faster with a pause for the snare.
Please reply. I love that beat from yesteryear.
You can reply here or to my email. HAone69@aol

By the way this list is outstanding and should be in the Smithsonian.

Sorry, can't really help you with your tune, cause there are literally hundreds of tunes like these (the closest thing to that description I've came across is Farley Knows House (try it if you haven't heard it, it's a great track)). You could throw in some more details, but I'm not sure I could help you even then, since I usually suck at id-ing.
Thank you for appreciating the list, though!

Hi everybody,

Don't know if anybody will read this, 'cause it's an old topic as I see.

I also tried to email Fast Eddie, but that didn't worked out.

Because I'm looking for a track myself for several years now... And it kinda fucks me up.

So my question is:

Did you al ready found your track??? Of course it could be I am searching for a totally different tune, but I really need to find this track.

The song I'm looking for was not by any responded reaction. I asked many dj's here in Holland, none of them seems to know what I'm talking about.

I heard the track somewhere in the early ninetees, and it is hardly a house track. It was on a old tape of my drug addicted neighbour. (talking heroin here) But he listened to the tape a lot and I can not forget it.

Like I said: it's hardly a house track, it was just a base, then percussion started. (Brazilian / African style) No keyboards, No samples, No singing blondes, no nothing, just drums and percussion.

I really hope somebody can help me out, 'cause this sucks.

By the way, my old neighbour went crazy. So no use of asking him

Greetings, Bas.

Please email me Basgoodpeople [a] hotmail.com

IMPI by IMPI - very cool track, very hard to find but I have a vinyl copy and will try to convert it into mp3 - check the light...

Or "turn it up" by the Good Fellas

808 state - pacific state 808 ?

I consider it more techno than house (at least the original version which appeared on Quadrastate EP). But it's the kind of track I'd never put on any list, since I (and a lot of other people) don't associate it with a certain genre (I just see it as a great EDM track)

Ahh ok, it is for sure a great song :)
Would you consider Rhythim is Rhythim - Strings of Life house or is it just me not classifying it correctly? To me, some classic techno and classic house has similarities, just house seems funkier.

It's so-called detroit house: techno with a housey bassline, decreased percussion work and some elements that are very common for house (vocals, pianos, congas...). That kind of music connects cold and futuristic detroit techno with a soulful and warm sound of chicago house. The best example are releases on Kevin Saunderson's KMS label and some of his projects, like Inner City and Reese & Santonio.
I've pretty much put all detroit house here, except some of Rhythim Is Rhythim tracks, which are on the techno list (since 9 of 10 people will tell you it's techno, not house).

Oh, okay thanks for clearing that up. (:

This list (and ranking of some of the tracks) was obviously composed from a UK perspective, influenced by having been force-fed the Jack Trax compilations. I was a young DJ from Chicago who spun in Frankfurt, GE from 86-89 (I introduced DeSkee to house music), and can say while the label (along with the Trax & DJ International distributors) did a decent job with spreading the movement to Europe, many of the tracks offered in the compilations were so homogenized with terrible mixes that it took away a track's core essence.

With that, here's just a couple tracks you TOTALLY missed on your list:

Funkin' With the Drums - Farley Funkin' Keith (1984)
Jack The Bass - Farley "Jackmaster" Funk (1985)
Funkin' With The Drums Again - Farley "Jackmaster" Funk (1985)
Virgo Tracks - Virgo (1984)
Music Is The Key - J.M. Silk (1985)
I've Lost Control - Sleazy D (THE ORIGINAL ACID TRACK - early 1986)
Chip E - Jack Trax (Includes Time To Jack, It's House) (1985)
Shadows Of Your Love - J.M. Silk (1986)
Don't Lead Me - Terry "Housemaster" Baldwin feat. Paris Grey (before she joined Inner City) (1987)
Reach For Your Dreams - Paris Grey Featuring Housemaster Baldwin (1987)
Solutions - Xaviera Gold (1987)
Do It Properly - 2 Puerto Ricans, A Blackman & A Dominican (1987)
Jack It All Night Long - Bad Boy Bill (1987)
Fantasy Girl - Pierre's Pfantasy Club (1987)
Got The Bug - Pierre's Pfantasy Club (1987)
Can't Stop The House - Thompson & Lenoir (1987)
No UFOS - Model 500 (1985) (Since you added Detroit techno to the list)
Off To The Battle - Model 500 (1987)
Acid Thunder - Fast Eddie (1988)

There are many more worthy tracks - if you and other page viewers can get your hands on it, I highly recommend listening to some of the old WBMX mixes that are floating around the internet, or make a purchase on eBay for some. After listening to some of the tracks used in the mixes by the Hot Mix 5 DJs, you will definitely want to amend your list.

You're right, Jack Trax series was one of my main sources for the list. I'm aware of the shortcomings, but you have to understand that for us Europeans these compilations were the best (sometimes even the only) way to hear this kind of music. And another plus is that one of my favourite house tracks "Just A Little Bit" is only available on one of these compilations.

Now, concerning your list... I've heard pretty much every track from it, except Funkin' With the Drums (this EP is pretty much impossible to get these days, I'm almost sure I'll never get it), Jack The Bass, Jack It All Night Long and Terry Baldwin's tracks (another interesting artist who's tracks are hard-to-get now). The thing is, this list hasn't been updated in more than half a year and in the meantime I obtained some really great singles and compilations. So I'm planning to update it this weekend, and tracks you suggested will surely find a place on this list (especially Music Is The Key, which will certainly break in top 20).

BTW, some tracks are already on the list (Acid Thunder, Got The Bug, Solutions, Time To Jack and Farley Knows House, which is the best track from Funkin' With The Drums Again EP) and some (No UFO's, Off To Battle) are on my other list.

How about "Bam Bam - Where's Your Child?" and "The Party Boy - The Twilight Zone (Bam Bam's Corrosion Mix)". Both are from 1988.

Yes, Where's Your Child is a wicked acid tune, don't know how I overlooked it. Unfortunately I haven't heard this other track. Thanks!

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BsUSHWO8ncE This is a link to it. The Party Boy is an alias of Bam Bam. The video that someone's put to this is a bit random. I would say this is even better than Where's Your Child, although the song as a whole isn't very trancey the acid line in it is possibly the most entrancing acid line I've heard outside of acid trance (not hypnotic, which I see as slightly different. That would go to Acid Tracks).

It's nice, I wouldn't say as good as Where's Your Child?, but definitely good enough for the list (and you're right, that 303 work is great). I'll add it as soon as I find a full version.

And while we're at youtube, check out these collections of oldschool tunes (some are really hard to find):
Classic & hard trance
Chicago, prog. house and techno
Techno, hardcore, breakbeat

Cheers for those links. I knew about the Housemasterz one but not the other two. 88to92 especially has some really good ones on there. Another user I've found to have a pretty good collection is this one: http://uk.youtube.com/profile?user=thelostreef

Yeah, that's a nice collection too (and the background is cool). Thanks!
BTW, that MISTERAMD guy (from the comments section) has a great Bonzai Records collection. Just to let you know if you haven't noticed already

Also this guy looks pretty good...

Hey, does ANYONE know a song of which the chorus goes : "Baby, i need your lovin, right now...", ive been searching for a while and its like it never existed! I hear it at some clubs in chicago right around the time the DJ plays some old school house, does anyone know the name of the artist and song?

Isn't the track you're thinking of more Italo than House?:

Baby (baby)...
I need youre lovin'....
Right now (right now, right now)....

Has a fair amount of synthesized melody to it....

I believe I know what you're talking about...but please confirm if I'm on the right track (pardon the pun)....

So... do you know the author and title of this song???? I have been trying to find it for some time, too. Used to have it on vynil, you are right, there is a good amount of synthetised melody to it, the male voice refrain goes "Baby, I nedd your lovin', right now". I have an old Mickey oliver WBMX mix where the song is featured, followed by Taffy's Midnight Radio. If you know the song, please do tell author and title. Thanks!!!

I just heard it tonight! Its Jerome Stocks "baby I need your lovin"

This list is awesome!!! How about adding The Voyage by Subculture it's from 91 :) but sersiously, thanks for the official titles...i never knew some of these titles!

Glad you liked it.
The Voyage is indeed a fantastic deep house track, but since I didn't add some other beauties from 90's like The Whistle Song by Frankie Knuckles or Where Love Lives by Alison Limerick (Knuckles & Morales) I won't add this one either. Maybe I'll make a short list of good Chicago house tracks from 90's (since production of Chicago house didn't actually stopped in 1990) which will surely contain The Voyage.

great list! great discussion! here's one for you: While djing in New York beginning the 90's, I got a lot of low-run, obscure house. The track was very deep with a male tribal chant that went (please forgive my phonetics) "EWANEGRE NEGRE SUA EWANEGRE NEGRE SUA EWANEGRE NEGRE SUA EWANAPANAA"
I 'm not sure if he was Brazilian or African but it was a wicked track. Would love to track it down. Any help would be much appreciated. Keep this thread going!

Don't like the guys comment on point 5. What a load of rubbish! House music will always sound great. Some of these tracks are among the best songs ever written. I would guess this guy probably wasn't 'there' in the first place....

Anyway, the list is good, but no surprises. Many of these are on old Trax compilations. I'm sure we've got 95% of these.

is there a link software when i can download it?

I am trying to find a house track that starts out with Ice T's "Yo, It's time to pump up the volume" sample and has a girls voice going UH!!! Then samples Kraftwerks "numbers" Eins Zwie Dri Vier - And has Jungle Brothers I'll House you "House music all night long" with a classic house bassline sample from Rickster "The night moves on". Does anyone know this track?

Yes. So am I. Did you find anything about it?

Being a part of the House Nation establishment during the 80's, I appreciate the efforts put forth in creating, updating, and comments re: this music. It is difficult to put all of the greatest tracks on one list. Great job to the person that started this post. I must admit that a lot of Chigoans were upset when dj's left town & took the music oversees but it has proven to be move to globalize house music. Long live House music.

I am looking for a song that i had on an old acid house compilation album from 1988. the only part that i can remember from the song is they say 'girls, girls, let's clear the runway". i would love to hear this song again and any help would be awesome!

Do you remember the name of the compilation?

lookin for a cut..."it's time.....it's time...." they used to mix it in at the end of "love n music" a lot. Any idea?

Awesome list mate, takes me back xx

Sublime listology! How many times I've been to a club/party billed as 'Oldschool' only to find the dj is only, say, 22 playing compilation cds(?). This list is honest, matter of fact and very infofrmative, many thanks to you Sljiva

Does anyone know this track ? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=362131983829982 There has been quite the internet search for this one but no luck so far every help will be much appreciated :)

I'm trying to find the name of this house song i used to listen to back in the Chicago 80's, part of the lyrics were, "I can feel ur nails upon my back, scratch me baby hurt me good give me a heart attack.....I believe that (forgot this part) six, if you stay with me tonight i'll show you my ____. Any thoughts?

I believe the name of that track is "You make me wanna dance". ( I believe that 2 times 4 is 6, if you stay with me tonight I'll show you my Dance. )

Dude, no TFP- the Force of Power or Petra & Co.- Just Let Go?
You didn't include any Lee Marrow or Tricky Disco, or wait, I'm assuming the songs I mentioned are after 1989.
Well what about starting a list from 1990 to 1992?
I'll help.

I've got a question about a song that i can't find. I'm hoping its house but im not sure if its strictly old school chicago house. The song has a dance vibe to it and there is a vocal sample repeating that goes something like "You know Iiiiiiiiiiiii want to loooooooove you, you know Iiiiii want to *something something" i couldn't ever really hear the second line, and even the part after "you know iiiiiiiii" was sort of mumbled out. It definitely says "you know i" and the 'i' is extended for a bit and it pitches in the middle of the hold so its like "you know IIIIuuuuIIIII"
im really sorry if this didnt help, this song has been stuck in my head for like a week and every time i try to search 'you know i' i get like the worst songs ever
plz help

can anyone help me with a track i.d. please.

it's a classic house track with a male vocal that describes all the elements of a house beat and when to add them.. i.e kick drum, snare, hi hats.

completely forgotten the name.. can anyone remember?

it's Elements from Danny Tenaglia.

i'm getting in the mix with deep house these days, but I must return to the classic, much of what I had on vinyl, have not really did house in over 25 yrs, so i'm back playing catch up.

Hi I just stumbled upon this list and it has help me a great deal..I'm looking for a track i think its acid house it goes like doon doon doon crash boom doon doon doon crash boom it was out in 88 89 mayb I know thats probably a little vague but its the entire track and I've heard it called tom and jerry? but cannot find anything musically related...can any one of you great music minds help me?

is it "Take Me To The Top"?

Stumbled across this list and had to register just to give dap to the creator.

I still have all these and more on vinyl. I may have gone through about 3 sets of equipment over the years, but I've never let go of my wax.

This list reminds me why I started spinning in the first place. Now I'm gonna put together a small setup and spin for myself at home.

Anyone know name of one where the only vocals is 'Africa' sampled throughout track (circa 87)- nice tribal deep dark underground beat the likes of virgo, jungle wonz etc. It's been the rarest record for me to track down.

I discovered House music when playing the video game Grand Theft Auto San Andreas in a cafe. The game also featured some of these classic house tracks like Marshall Jefferson - Move Your Body, Mr. Fingers - Can You Feel It, Raze - Break 4 Love,Frankie Knuckles - Your Love, A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray, Steve ''Silk'' Hurley - Jack Your Body and Robert Owens - Bring Down The Walls. I used to hear these tracks while playing the game and I just used to love them like fabulous. They were a great mood lifter. I always used to wonder what kind of music is this and what category of music it falls in. Well now I know it is House music. I also found classic house on YouTube. I am thrilled to find such a big list of classic house music. I will use it to download some tracks from it and make a CD as well. Fabulous list.

The list is missing two of the best and most sought after 80s' house tunes ever made.

M+M - I Wanna House (Missing Records '87)

Various - Missing Records Special Edition Volume 1 (Missing Records '87) 4 amazing tracks

Marcus Mixx had some additional house songs...

I Miss lots of great tracks. S-Express - Theme Form S-Express (1988) , Sydney Youngblood ‎- If Only I Could (1989) , Mr. Jacks - Only House Music (1995) and so on. But anyway i think its a great list and i begin to collect it :)

63. Kissing The Pink ‎– Certain Things Are Likely
is not house music. Its a german syth-pop band.

Nice list. How about this one which is a fave of mine:

Sterling Void & Paris Brightledge ‎– It's All Right

thanks for post

Do anyone knows who sings the house track Girls, Girls, Girls? Red and black label.

Foremost Poets - Reasons To Be Dismal (Foresight Version)... One of the best tracks Made, Hats Off

Some hot tracks I did no see in the list:

Criminal Element Orchestra - House time, anytime
and some euro house tracks
2 Men a drum machine & a trumpet - Tired of getting pushed around
Jack E. Makossa - The opera house
Krush - House arrest

Trying to ID a track from the late 80's or very early 90's. Very smooth, airy synths throughout, and a female vocal sample singing 'lift our dreams'.

Any assistance very much appreciated :)
