The trouble with brunettes : my favorite Hal Hartley movies (and some brunettes who play parts in them)

  1. Flirt a daring piece of storytelling experience, this three-part modern fairytale takes many viewings to be fully enjoyed (Parker Posey, Miho Nikaido)
  2. Simple Men the best of Hartley's character-driven movies might as well be the best independent american movie of the 90's (Elina Löwensohn, Holly Marie Combs)
  3. Surviving Desire this 50-minute movie contains some of Hartley's most clever and snappy dialogue (Susan B. Ward)
  4. Trust this was the breakthrough movie which put Hartley on the world map of independent movies and first caught him the attention of the discerning european audience (Adrienne Shelly is a redhead)
  5. Henry Fool the closest that Hal Hartley ever came to mainstream recognition thanks to a highly deserved Best screenplay award at the 98 Cannes Film Festival (Parker Posey, Miho Nikaido)
  6. The Book of Life shot in digital video and featuring lots of blurry motion this story tackles subjects that request a sharp mind and a full education (PJ Harvey, Miho Nikaido)
  7. Amateur partly produced by european funds this movie saw Hartley stray from character-driven situations to situation-driven characters (Elina Löwensohn, Parker Posey)
  8. The Unbelievable Truth Hartley's first feature-length movie contains everything from the strong characters to the witty dialogue, the dry humor, the cultural references and the difficult love but also shows the weaknesses of a first movie (Adrienne Shelly is a redhead)

I can't include No Such Thing nor The Girl from Monday as the former never was released in my small part of the world and the latter was just recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival

Haha, the way you mention brunettes in all your (intreresting) lists is great!

that's the idea, yes... type brunettes in the search thingy and you find all my stuff

How did I miss this list until now? While the low ranking of Amateur shoves spears into my side, Simple Men's high position gives me sweet water to drink. Hal Hartley needs more love!

(Though I fear No Such Thing might remain MIA even after you see it...)

As I said, I have ranked Amateur that low because I feel it's globally different from the rest of Hal's movies because mainly in Amateur the situations lead the characters while in other movies especially Trust, Surviving Desire and Simple Men, the situations occur because of what the characters are and do... but of course Amateur is a great movie, just not my favorite of Hartley's

I understand. I think Amateur tackles the issue of fate vs. choice, and as a result, the events around the characters do determine more than they usually do in a Hartley film.

I'm just glad somebody else digs the man!

fate vs. choice indeed... and the usual Hartley stuff... ignorance vs. knowledge beliefs vs. doubt social slavery vs. individual freedom

Ah, Hal...
