I agree with listing Ani DiFranco, but please tell me why Jewel ROCKS, because the answer isn't really obvious to me.

i'm talking old-school jewel. OBVIOUSLY!! (*giggle*). well you're right, she's not even in the same realm as ani. becase ani is a goddess and jewel's stil in the application process for getting her wings (and it's not looking good for her, it seems). but i still think jewel has her moments. i mean, can you honestly say you didn't rock out to "who will save your soul" a few times?
Do these all have to be modern singers? 'Cause if not, I nominate Janis Joplin, who blows these chicks out of the water. [Oh wait, Joni Mitchell isn't exactly brand spanking new, is she? ;) ]
i recommend Sarah Slean, Susan Werner, and Sarah Harmer.
if i had to list similarities, i'd say Slean: Tori Amos, Werner: Indigo Girls, and Harmer: maybe Shania-esque, but a bit more gritty. that's underestimating them a bit, but anyway, they're all worth checking out.
