Top 400 trance tracks of all time

  1. _These are the rules for posting recommendations. If you break one, I will ignore you. Read them before making a suggestion:

  2. 1.If you suggest even one track that is already on the list, I will ignore all other tracks in your suggested list. Use edit/find (on this page), or hit control-f to search out tracks before recommending them. Don't just whip your playlist off into the comments, I want you to make sure it's a)better than some of the tracks on this list, and b)NOT ALREADY ON IT, before you suggest I add it. This list is massive, and the base of tracks it was selected out of is even bigger. I don't mean to be a jerk about it, but I don't have the time to sift through records that are already on the list. Plus, that tells me you didn't think about your suggestion.
  3. 2.If you've been listening to trance for less than 9 months, you have a DJ Mystik track on your computer anywhere, or you still (seriously) find tracks by typing "trance" or "techno" into a file sharing program, then please don't suggest anything. Your recommendation is going to be stupid. No, trust me. It is.
  4. 3. Don't post "I can't believe [insert probably stupid and derivative track here] isn't on the list! What gives?!?!?" or anything even remotely close to that comment. What gives? If it's really such a masterpiece and it's not on the list, then I probably haven't heard it, dumbass (Or I've heard it, it sucks, and you just have no taste). If you make that comment, I will ignore you. In fact, if you even think about making that comment, don't bother posting, your suggestion is going to be stupid. There are literally millions of trance tracks, and there is no possible way anyone could listen to them all (I've only heard tens of thousands). Although the best tracks tend to bubble up into underground recognition (and no further), there are likely dozens of masterpieces that have gone unnoticed - this is what I'm looking for. However, there are hundreds of thousands of piles of derivative crap that directly steal from classics and never go anywhere. These appeal to newbies who haven't been around long enough to hear the originals (and to E-tards who have no memory of any tracks they've heard at any events), which is why no one who hasn't listened to trance for over 9 months should post here. If you don't know enough about trance to know that more records are released than could ever possibly be listened to, you don't know enough about trance to make an intelligent suggestion, and you're wasting your time.
  5. 4. If you have ever, EVER in your life shouted "TIIIIEEEESSSSTTTOOOOO!!!!" or said anything along the lines of "OMG OMG OMG Tiesto is such a God OMG!" don't post here, because you're an idiot. He can play records. Calloo, calay, he belongs on Mount Olympus.
  6. 5. Do not write a post stating something like "that's just your opinion! [boring derivative crap] is a masterpiece, you just won't open your ears!" [Stupid derivative crap] is not a masterpiece. You just haven't heard enough trance to know that [stupid derivative crap] doesn't have a shred of originality in it.
  7. 6. If you don't like at least five trance tracks produced before 1995, don't bother posting a suggestion, as you know absolutely nothing about trance. Come back when you're older, sonny.
  8. 7. If you don't like acid, or don't know what acid is (and weren't knocked out by rule number 2), you're an idiot, don't post.
  9. 8. If you don't listen to at least 3 other kinds of electronic music that are not mainstream hip-hop genres or played on the radio, you have no perspective, don't post a suggestion.

  10. _Here's a torrent of the first 50 songs:
  11. here
  12. Many thanks to AsColdAsIce for making this. I'm not sure if it works, but it's worth a shot.

  13. Final note: there are going to be songs on here that aren't perfectly 100% trance. If you see this tag beside a track:
  14. {arguable},
  15. then the track is disputable (or disputed) in some way.
  16. The genres essentially represented are ibiza trance, epic trance, psytrance/goa trance, anthem trance, classic trance, acid trance, ambient trance, tech-trance, and progressive trance. I am liberal with these categories, and what has also ended up on here is some trancier ambient house, acid techno, progressive house, tech-house, "minimal," and breaks. There is a limit, but it's blurry. For example, you won't find funky house, breakbeat hardcore, or aggrotech on here.

  17. Humate - Love Simulation (Paul van Dyk's Love mix) [1993] [Ibiza trance]
  18. It's amazing how little this track loses its loveliness with repeat listens. I've had it for 6 years now, and I still love it just as much as I did when it floored me on the first listen. Even the other top 10 tracks (while still amazing) have diminished in some ways with compulsive listening, but this one remains the shining gem at the top of the trance genre. This perfectly captures the beauty of a tropical sunset on a peaceful deserted island, and to this day never fails to evoke such a scene.

  19. The Age of Love - Age of Love (Jam & Spoon's Watch out for Stella mix) [1992] [classic trance]
  20. This is often erroneously called the first trance tune of all time, including by me for a very long time. Well, it wasn't. There was no "first trance tune." It seems to have slowly coalesced out of the Belgian new beat, acid house, techno, and euro-house miasma around at the time. You can look for related tracks in each of these early scenes, but none of them are "trance" per se, they clearly fall into their respective styles. And the first artists who actually set out to make "trance" were mimicking a genre that was already defined. So where do you draw the line? You don't. There was no big bang.
  21. Also, the so-called "original mix" available pretty much everywhere is almost universally actually the (admittedly superior) Jam & Spoon remix. I finally found the real original mixes, and they're not trance at all - they're inarguably new beat. You can almost hear some trance in there, but it's a seed, at best.
  22. That said, this version is a fantastic track, and still one of trance's first. It's beautiful, ethereal, and above all, entrancing.

  23. Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Three N' One mix) [1998] [anthem trance/ibiza trance]
  24. The track that defines everything that an ibiza anthem is, full of all of the excess and bombast of the island: pure dancable joy. The track's central hook is a long, arpeggiated melody looping such that the beginning and end melt together into an endless sphere. It sounds like sped-up 70's minimalism run through a 90's dark trance synth with a sub-tribal feel (it's the beats that do this). I'll admit, the build-up is a little bit cliche by now, but it wasn't really at the time, and for second-wave trance, it's as creative as it's going to get, and more than compensated by the spot-on anthem. In a not so surprising twist, this was initially written by one of the fathers of modern trance (Cosmic Baby), back in 1993 (they were always better at trance than the bedroom nerds and the corporate pop machine). It has gotten another remix every single year since 93, most of which are picked up by trance jocks and many of which go back on the club charts (the best is undoubtedly 1997's chart-topping Three N' One remix (although some prefer the 1998 Nalin & Kane version, and classic trance addicts will love the original)).

  25. Future Sound of London - Papua New Guinea [1991] [ambient trance/classic trance]
  26. Released in 1991, this song wasn't even intended to be trance - no one even used the word yet (although there was a fledgling sound growing in the underground house, rave, and techno scenes). It was meant to be ambient breaks, but "Papua New Guinea's" atmosphere was like little other electronic dance released at the time - ethereal, spacy, almost angelic, but still dancefloor-worthy, catchy, and even relaxing. The song instantly became a trance classic once the genre was brought into official existence in 1993, and deservingly so. Like it's predecessor "Age of Love," even today it can be played without sounding the slightest bit dated.
  27. {arguable - ambient breaks}

  28. Underworld - Born Slippy (NUXX). [1995] [classic trance/hard trance]
  29. A melodic trance tune with stream-of-consciousness lyrics that become stranger with each listen, mainly beacuse they never really had any actual internal logic to begin with. The melody is unforgettably catchy, and contains a nice twist in the middle, in which it goes from being a wistful and pretty little ambient trancer, to a hard and abrasive swedish techno stormer, and pulls both off better than just about anything in either genre. Surprisingly, especially with this being, you know, actually good, this was a huge hit in Europe (it went to number 2 on the world chart in 1996-97), and gets at least two new remixes every year, at least one of which always goes back on the club charts (hopefully 2006 will be an exception? Honestly, they're never going to top the original). So, not only is it one of the best, it's also the most popular to still retain credibility.
  30. {arguable - melodic techo(?)}

  31. Sasha - Xpander [1999] [progressive trance]
  32. Perfect progressive trance. A melody that, like the last 2 tracks, is atmospheric, loops on itself, and endlessly contagious, without seeming repetitive. This song is absorbing - the feeling throughout is impossible to describe, since like I said before...dancing about architecture. Just download the track. It's incredible. (Was another mega-European hit. I don't know the details specifically, but it doesn't matter).

  33. Nalin & Kane - Beachball [1996] [ibiza trance]
  34. Gorgeous, elegant, and never tiring. It's quite possible that I've listened to this track more times than any other, probably my personal favorite. Built out of tribal, yet melodic beats (the "Nalin and Kane sound"), relaxing and inobtrusive vocals, and a slow, subtle build that takes its time to breakdown. When it does breakdown, air strings and seagulls wash and flow around each other as if musically taking flight to a Mediterannean sky over a sunset-golden beach. When the breakdown ends, "Becahball" slowly floats back to earth, before spending the remainder of the track rippling back and forth between the sky and the sand.
  35. {arguable - ibiza house}

  36. Paragliders - Paraglide [1993] [classic trance]

  37. DnTel - (This is) The Dream of Evan and Chan (Superpitcher Kompakt remix) [2002] [minimal trance]
  38. This is probably the only trance track ever created with vocals worth listening to. But it doesn't rest on them, just allowing them to sparsely resonant in a minimal nothing, it raises them, gently bringing them to soaring heights with gorgeous melodies that slowly drown out the surreal beauty of the evocative lyrics. Eventually the glistening bells overtake the words entirely, taking the already flying track into the stratosphere. It's the perfect representative of minimal trance.
  39. {arguble: tech-house/progressive house/microhouse}

  40. Hardfloor - Acperience 1 [1992] [acid trance/classic trance]
  41. {arguable - acid}

  42. Hybrid - Symphony [1997] [orchestral trance]
  43. Wow. Forget Adagio for Strings, forget Protect Your Mind, forget ****ing Airwave, symphonic trance was created and destroyed with this track. Everything trance is supposed to make you feel, and almost everything classical is supposed to do can be found here in this amazing song. Easy to dance to, creative beats (breaktrance, so they actually put some thought into them), more melodies than you can possibly count, and all this without sounding crowded or overstuffed; all of it original. They even did it without overusing the breakdown. Fantastic, it completly lives up to its title.

  44. Aphex Twin - Didgeridoo [1992] [acid trance]
  45. This track is simultaneously hard, twisted and beautiful, which is something I would have considered a nearly impossible feat until I heard this, and despite being over 15 years old, it still sounds innovative and fresh today. Built on a foundation of Basic Channel-esque foggy acid lines, Didgeridoo manages to build and break like trance, while meandering and wandering like ambient and relentlessly pounding and squiggling like acid techno without sounding forced or mashed together. A didgeridoo sets the bassline resulting in a simultaneously relaxing, funky and dark atmosphere. It can sound like a trance anthem, a techno monster, or an ambient chilldown depending on how you listen, and it's all of those together and more, and it grows greater with each listen. Didgeridoo is undoubtedly one of the greatest trance tracks of all time. Whether or not it's in the genre of "trance" per se is questionable (though a connecting thread is certainly there), but in the most elastic sense of entrancing dance music, it comes out pretty close to the top.
  46. {arguable - ambient acid techno(?)}

  47. Orbital - Halcyon On & On [1993] [ambient trance]
  48. {arguable - ambient techno}

  49. Chicane - Offshore [1996] [ibiza trance]
  50. {arguable - ambient house/ibiza house}

  51. Banco De Gaia - Heliopolis [1993] [classic trance/acid trance]

  52. Choice - Acid Eiffel [acid trance]
  53. {arguable - acid techno}

  54. Ame - Rej [2005] [minimal trance/neo-trance]
  55. {arguable - "minimal"}

  56. L.S.G. - Netherworld [1997] [progressive trance]

  57. Balil - Parasight [1993] [classic trance/acid trance]

  58. Salt Tank - Eugina [1996] [ibiza trance]

  59. The PQM - You Are Sleeping (Luke Chable Vocal mix) [2004] [progressive trance/deep trance]
  60. {arguable - progressive house}

  61. LSG - Hearts [1994] [classic trance/acid trance]

  62. Dance 2 Trance - We Came in Peace [1990] [classic trance]
  63. Another contender for first trance song ever created. Whether this track came first, or Age of Love is questionable, but the quality of this little masterpiece is indisputable. Almost like minimal goa, mixed with James Holden-esque progressive (but of course, it predates all of that). It's reminiscent of being on the moon, or on the surface of an alien world: exactly the way trance should sound.

  64. Underworld - Dark Train [1994] [classic trance]

  65. Infected Mushroom - Mush Mushi [goa trance/psytrance]

  66. Gabriel Ananda - Ihre Persönliche Glücksmelodie [2005] [minimal trance/neo-trance]

  67. Paul Van Dyk - For an Angel [1994] [epic trance]

  71. The MFA - The Difference it Makes [2004] [minimal trance/neo-trance]
  72. {arguable - progressive house}

  73. Cybernaut - Hydroponix [1997] [goa trance/psytrance]

  74. Datura - Yerba Del Diablo [1992] [classic trance/acid trance]
  75. {I find it's a lot like psytrance/goa trance, but this isn't a bad thing.}

  76. Three Drives - Greece 2000 [1997] [progressive trance/anthem trance]

  77. PHD - Summer Storm (Leisure Lounge Edit) [1994] [classic trance/acid trance]

  78. Jam and Spoon - Stella [1992] [ibiza trance]

  79. Hallucinogen - LSD [1994] [psytrance/goa trance]

  80. Commander Tom - Are Am Eye? [1995] [classic trance/dark trance(?)]
  81. {arguable - rave}

  82. Phobia - Phobia (DJ Hell mix) [1991/2007] [classic trance/acid trance]
  83. What actually makes the DJ Hell 2007 mix different from the 1991 original is pretty minimal (ha. ha. no.), but it seems to do the trick, elevating what was already a trance classic into the neo-trance masterpiece it was always meant to be. Really though, everything that made the track so incredible to begin with is there, and everything added on could have been created back in 1991. But it rounds it out perfectly.
  84. It's rather dark trance. The anchoring melody is simply a two note depth charge interspersed with a transmission-like voice ("let me have silence") and a strangely affecting diva wail, held down by a circular acid line that eventually dissolves into quasi-anthemic territory (a la Acid Eiffel, which it actually transcends). Everything here is simple and effective, and reminiscent of floating in space past a rocky wasteland moon, no power in the ship, unable to navigate, fleeing alien depth charges. Or perhaps it's like being under the ocean on an alien planet in almost complete blackness and silence but for the occasional bursts of extraterrestrial explosives seeking to destroy your submarine, hidden in the deep, the power.
  85. This is also a flagpost of what seems to be a classic trance revival of sorts brought about by an adoring minimal community (some of whom floated out of classic trance-land in the first place, fleeing the epic anthem boom of the late 90s. You know who I mean. Sven Vath. Stephan Bodzin.)

  86. Etnica - Moon Influence [1996] [goa trance/psytrance]

  87. Yahel - Voyage [2000] [psytrance/epic trance]

  88. Binary Finary - 1998 [1998] [anthem trance]
  89. Note: 1999 and 2000 are the same track, re-released for more guiltless radioplay and club spinning. Although why this odd norm exists at all is beyond me. If you still like the track, just keep playing it. Don't buy it again with a different date stamped on the cover, just so you can label yourself "upfront."

  90. Union Jack - Red Herring [1995] [acid trance]

  91. Beanfield - Tides (Carl Craig mix) [2004] [minimal trance/neo-trance]

  92. Cybordelics - Adventures of Dama [1993] [classic trance]

  94. Leftfield - Phat Planet [1999] [deep trance]
  95. {arguable - progressive house}

  97. {arguable - anthem house}

  98. DJ Tiesto - Suburban Train [2001] [epic trance]

  99. James Holden - Nothing (93 Returning mix) [2003] [progressive trance]

  100. Roland Appel - Dark Soldier [2007] [minimal trance/neo-trance]

  101. Efdemin - Lohn & Brot [2007] [minimal trance/neo-trance]
  102. "Minimal" has gotten so trancy this year that almost all of the best new tracks warrant (high) places on this list.
  103. This is the only trance track on the entire list that I fell in love with during the opening bar (Those first three notes are actually truly beautiful, and even if the track didn't go anywhere from there it would still warrant a place somewhere on this list as the best filler of all time). I don't even cut this track up in my iPod playlist.
  104. {arguable - minimal. But argue with me that it's really minimal and not trance at all and I'll actually beat you down. I will find out where you live, and I will beat you down. It's got breakdowns, dammit, BREAKDOWNS. Yeah, minimal. Right.}

  105. Orbital - Belfast [1992] [ambient trance]
  106. Art of Trance - Madagascar (Cygnus X mix) [1998] [epic trance/anthem trance]
  107. Gus Gus - Purple (Sasha vs. The Light mix) [1998] [progressive trance]

  119. {arguable - progressive house}
  120. Astral Projection - Mahadeva [1996] [psytrance]
  121. Like an ancient tribal ceremony, plus aliens.
  122. {arugable - psy. But really, think about it. Psy...trance. PsyTRANCE.}
  123. Petter - These Days [2004] [deep trance/neo-trance]
  124. {arguable - progressive breaks}

  182. X-Tracks - Plan 94 (The Voyage) [1994] [classic trance]

  418. Darude - Sandstorm [1999] [anthem trance]
  419. This track is not a sellout, and it deserves much of the popular support it got. There is not one element to this track that panders to the masses any more than the rest of the anthem trance. I'll admit, there are better tunes that should also be imported to the mainstream, but this track is still pretty good.

  538. _Note: "Not trance at all, but excellent tracks" removals:
  539. The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds [1991] [ambient trance]
  540. This is ambient house, and not even slightly definable as trance. I foolishly left it on the list for so long that I didn't want to remove it. I was quite foolish.).
  541. This is one of only 3 ambient anything tracks to ever reach the top 40 charts (correct me if I'm wrong on this one). It was a runaway hit when released in 1990 (although I don't know if it ever reached North America), Little Fluffy Clouds was another major influence on the formation of the trance genre. Catchy melodies, ambient synths, and an interesting vocal sample, combined with the trademark Orb atmosphere make this another incredible classic.
  542. 808 State - Pacific State [1989] (it's actually house)
  543. Orbital - Chime [1990] (rave)
  544. Layo & Bushwacka! - Love Story [2002] (progressive house)
  545. Ulrich Schnauss - Kneuddelmaus (very melodic IDM)
  546. Force Legato - System [1989] (EBM)
  547. DJ Hooligan - Hear You Now [2002] (Note: I had this track confused with Starecase - Faith (Loafer mix) for 4 years, and only discovered it today. I heard the actual track. I don't really like it. Besides, it's not even close to being trance. More like ambient pop, the sort of thing I always imagined when I heard the term [the actual genre sounds nothing like this, it's really just ambient/chillout with yet another flashy title] )
  548. Cass & Mangan - Green Eggs [2005] (progressive house/tech-house)
  549. Felix da Housecat - Watching Cars Go By (electro-house/electroclash)
  550. Orbital - One Perfect Sunrise
  551. Ian Van Dahl - Castles in the Sky
  552. P.O.S. - Remember [2003]
  553. Paul Van Dyk - Forbidden Fruit
  554. The Horrorist - One Night in New York City (it's seriously just techno)
  555. Sander Kleinenberg - The Fruit [2004] (Electro-house, inarguably)
  556. Dark Suite - Dark Sweet Piano (Wally Lopez mix) (not trance at all)

  557. Recent Removals: [derivative, cheesy, annoying, undanceable, and/or undeniable not trance/entrancing, it all goes in here]

  563. Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone [1998]
  564. Planet Perfecto - Bullet in the Gun
  565. Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock [2003]
  566. DJ Shog - Another World {Quite possibly one of the worst producer names of all time. Besides the fact that putting "DJ" before your alias is ****ing idiotic, "Shog" is probably the stupidest slang term ever invented. Totally inappropriate too, considering it's an ebonic word: this is about the equivalent of a trance artist named DJ Murda-Thug. Only "shog" has no street cred as a colloquialism (ie: only wiggers say it), so it's like calling yourself DJ Fuzzy Street Soldja, playing fluffy trance, and thinking you're pretty hardcore. The track is also terrible.)
  567. Delerium - After All (Svenson & Gielson mix) [2004]
  568. Aquagen - Summer is Calling
  569. Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Tiesto mix)

For (another) particularly good trance list on listology, check out
Blind's list

For another alternate opinion on the best trance music, check out: TranceAddict's list. His ideas are very different from mine, I don't agree with quite a few of his top tracks, but if he thought exactly what I did, what would the point be of making a list? Worth checking out.

Thanks! XD

Would you consider Infinity by Climax for your list?

Well i think this is a very good list, but...
i'm serioussly think... who is this "darktremor" to post a list. Are you an expert??? How old are you??? I think here are great songs but you simply don't catch the essence of trance music to me!!! I let you know i'm not an expert in this area but i think you either. Only check your list, the first 10 songs not a pure trance songs and you post like is the best trance songs ever created, there are great songs but THE BEST TRANCE SONGS??? I really sorry for you and for my english 'cause i'm latin jajajaja. Bye!!!

Whatever, I never said I was an expert.

Trilithon - Trance Dance would make an interesting listen. Its a really trippy Goa track released way, way ahead of its time in '91. It can be found on this album.

Cool, I'll get ahold of it ASAP, that sounds really interesting.

I checked it out, and it's awesome, but it's definitely darksynth/spacesynth, not really trance. Also, the beats fit new beat far better than trance - it's too slow, especially for psytrance.

Still, it REALLY sounds like trance. I went back and forth several times on whether it was trance or not (like with most proto-trance from 1991 or earlier). I'm still not 100% sure.

I have no idea what darksynth/spacesynth. I automatically put it down as goa trance. Sure its slow, but its '91 after all. Who had heard of goa back then? Goa/Psy is generally fast, but in the end its more the effect of the track and, atleast for me, the track's goa-ish enough.

If you liked the track then you could try out the rest of the album, there are some good tracks in there.

I think I will, they showed a lot of promise as artists.

Impressive list. Great selections. I am a bit curious why Hardfloor's "Acperience" is so low. That seems like such a classic (not to mention quite influential) that it would have to be in the top 20.

Indeed, why the hell did I put it way down there? Well, that's easy enough to fix. Not top 20 IMO, but way up there, for sure.

Glad you enjoy the list :D

Actually, you win. The more I listen to it, the more it grows on me. It seems like a perfect representation of everything that trance (in its purest sense) is all about. Turns out I also had Acperience 1 and Acperience 3 mixed up (I've been downloading the Eye Q and Harthouse back-catalogues lately). They're similar, for sure, but the way Acperience 1 builds (versus 3) just gives it something really special.

It's good that you decided to boost "Acperience" to a loftier spot. I'm glad it's grown on you. Once again, great list.

Cydonia - Animals
4 Voice - Catching the Scent of Mystery
Salt Tank - Charged Up
Tranceliner - Greetings From the Exile

I would think that you may have forgotten about the first song Animals, but the other three are great, albeit obscure ones.

I can't find Cybernaut - Hydroponix anywhere (incl. Soulseek) Can someone help me with that?

The correct artist and song name is: Cybernauts - Hydrophonix

That might help you out :)

I dont know where you can find it but try Offer Nissim feat. Maya - Heartbreaking. I say it deserves some recognition. ^_^

i have that track at vbr 262kbps :-)

You guys seem to know what you're on about.
Ive been listening to trance properly for about 3 years now.

Im in need of some new tracks, I have a lot of the ones that are high up in this list, but I'm not that keen on most of them (nothing personal).

Heres my top 20, most of them are fairly enduring for me, as in I havnt got sick of them for ages.

1. Miika & Jussi - Reginella
2. Dirt Devils - Music is life (Jono Grant vs. P.O.S. Remix)
3. Luminary - Amsterdam
4. Pulser - Point of Impact
5. Lennox - Flyin Amongst the Stars
6. Randy Katana - In Silence (Txitxarro Remix)
7. The Thrillseekers - Affinity 2005
8. Ratty - Sunrise
9. Ridgewalkers feat. EL - Find (Kyau vs. Albert Remix)
10. Andy Moor - Halcyon (Alex M O R P H Mix)
11. Pulser - Square One
12. Firewall - Sincere (Original Lange Mix)
13. Kai Tracid - Too Many Times
14. Pulser - My Religion
15. Ralphie B - Massive
16. Simon & Shaker - Zero
17. Ferry Corsten - Star Traveller
18. Edin Bosnjak - Alluring Wishes
19. Beam - On Your Mind
20. Sholan - Can You Feel (Thrillseekers Mix)

I don't really know anyone else who listens to trance (I live in a large country town in Queensland, Australia) so I'd be well interested in hearing other peoples opinions on my list or recommendations on similar artists/tracks.

Sob story follows:

Really, I'm feeling all isolated and lonely now, pretty much everyone I know calls my music "techno", and the clubs play gangsta rap and Slinkee Minx. It's not much fun :(

Hey Watch this video. I hope it clarifies your dilemma...lol..but seriously though watch it! ^_^

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTlWfmXIj7I&feature=related

And I would want all you Trance-A-Holics to listen to this tune...maybe its just me but I love it...

Deepsky - Ghost (Gabriel & Dresden Mix)

And if none of you can't find it...ALWAYS youtube it...

Archeye,

Not too many tracks I really think are exceptional on your Top 20 but Ratty's "Sunrise (Here I Am) [Club Mix]" released in 2000 is a wicked track and should definitely be considered as a "best of trance" track.

I forgot about "Sunrise (Here I Am)", but when I think about it, it is a track that would appeal to newcomers to the genre and also appeal to the old skooler, like me. It is a complete track.

I remember a few years back now, being almost comatose on a sofa in a Perth club, when my DJ mate threw this track down and I was instantly part of the living again.

Good suggestion

hello all, I love Trance and have been listening to Melodic Trance since 1993, and I would have to say that after looking at this list and listening to most in the top 50, the tracks should have been categorized by the different types of trance style"s each track represents, like melodic trance, progressive, ambient,Minimal and so forth.,this is why the most popular online trance radio DI.FM sub divides its stations, and yes to all who dont agree Armin and Tiesto are thought as to be gods in trance music, yes they are but they mostly concentrate on the melodic side of trance, there are many tracks in the top 50 that i dont agree as to being the top ever, but maybe in their style of trance do deserve to be in the top, again if feel that the trance genre has become so popular that it need to be sub divided,.

Hey. Nice list. The one song i suggest to be added is Sander Kleinenberg - My Lexicon

Its harmony and simple yet brilliant melody reminds me of Xpander.

I'de rank it top 20 easily. Up to you though.

Hey there, awesome list. This will keep me busy for a veeeeeery long time. =D

Anyways, here are my suggestions.

Mauro Picotto - Back to Cali (P.U.S.H. Remix)
Armin Van Buuren - Communication Part 3
Mandy and Randy - One Beat One Melody
Tune Up! - Raver's Fantasy
Tune Up! - Raver's Fantasy (Rave Mix)
Guyver - Serious Sound
Leon Boiler - Summernight Confessions
Aquagen - Take the Chance (Beam vs. Cyrus Remix)
Tony De Vit - The Dawn (Bryan Kearney Remix)
DJ Joop - The Future
Cosmic Gate - The Wave

AudieMurphy,

Tony De Vit's "The Dawn" is a terrific track, but the kearney mix is a 2007 remix. The original should be considered over any remix made years later. The original was released on an EP in 1998 a couple of months after he died of AIDS related illnesses.

However, it could be argued that the original mix was more HardHouse than Trance, so in that case later trance remixes could be considered like the 2007 Bryan Kearney mix.

How about Sirenal- Wasteland... an excellent track which can be found on Tiesto Forbidden Paradise 7.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEgXgl8FaUE

Also on Forbidden Paradise 7 is Tiesto's collaborative Hammock Brothers- Meladonic, excellent banging trance, especially as it matures.

How about On A Mission by Soundlift? It's listenable...I have another song which is pretty good...People consider it hard trance but how about "Krismah - Heroes (Luca Antolini and Ricky T remix)"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrpuEJ6212E

or this one too which is also hard trance

Solar Quest - Acid Air Raid (Warfare Phase 1 Hardstyle Remix)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN23yHHLxyA

Two suggestions:

Itch-e And Scratch-e - Sweetness And Light

Logic Bomb - Neighbour of the Beast

Eezz

Itch-E & Scratch-E's "Sweetness & Light" is one of my favourite tunes. Darktremor may have missed it, as it only had limited worldwide release. It was however a huge tune in Australia where it won the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Award for Best Dance Single in 1995. It beat Quench's "Dreams" for the award, however, Dreams is, and forever will be, my favourite trance tune.

Good suggestion

This list inspired me to start listening to more EDM, Trance in particular. Great list.

I made a list titled 'list of electronic dance music genres', and it would be appreciated if you could post your suggestions.

I really don't know if you've listened to this, but you should definitely give it a try:

Slyder - Jetscream [2001] [progressive trance] - progressive as it is never seen today

The sound of a spaceship propelling in space, just as trance should sound like. I think of it as a lost treasure.

I'm still looking for fresh tunes (and not minimal/neo trance things), I've mainly listened to all of the potential good tracks from 2008 and 2009, still I haven't found any worth listening more than 10 times...unfortunately. The last good track is from 2007, in fact there are more, but I'm really not sure they will fit the all-time top400 trance tracks.

And congrats about the new order, that's more like it. In fact, excepting Papua New Guinea (one track that I really hate it - although its importance in trance music is quite relevant), the first 8 tracks are pure history. And the rise of Age of Love has really put a smile on my face, my top5 would be something like: 1-Age of Love, 2-Cafe del Mar, 3-Xpander, 4/5-Love Stimulation/Born Slippy...that's very close to what you've shown here.

I sense Digeridoo is going down. What's the reason? I've read it was #1 a few months/years ago.

Hi everyone. Congratulations Darktremor on this amazing feat!! It really is helpful and interesting - I've learned lots about the Trance genre through this site, and discovered new & excellent tracks. Very grateful!

Some suggestions (dunno if these suit your tastes as much as mine, and it should be noted that some might not be considered trance at all - i would be interested to know your opinions. Nevertheless, I think that they are definitely worth a listen).

I hope that none of these have been mentioned before, I have checked.. (there could be a hidden gem or two here which might make the list - who knows.. Alternatively, you might hate them all with a passion, but either way, comments would be helpful)

Alone with You (original mix) - Deadmau5
Adventures of... - Terra Firma
Ecstasy - ATB
Score - Slyder
Lizard - Mauro Picotto
Beautiful - DJ Orkidea
Beautiful Alt. - DJ Orkidea
What ya Got 4 me - Signum
Free your Mind - Spaceracer
Heart of Asia - Watergate
Synaesthesia 2004 - The Thrillseekers ft Sheryl Deane (different to Synaesthesia - The Thrillseekers)
Your'e Not Alone - ATB
The Summer - ATB
Driving Faces - Liquid Child
Happiness Happening - Lost Witness
Come 2 Gether - Floyd
Fly Away - Vincent de Moor
Stay - Sash!
Ecuador - Sash!
Isn't Life Wonderful - Alex D'elia vs Ebop Allstars
The Truth - En Motion
Touch Me (original mix) - Rising Star
I Feel Love - CRW
We Come 1 - Faithless
Everyword - Ercola feat. Daniella
Melbourne (David Newsum remix) - Sean Tyas
Flowtation - Vincent de Moor
Neptuna - Pulsedriver
Luvstruck - Comicon
Analogic - Cally & Juice
Galaxia - Moonman

Finally, would you class the following two tracks as 'Trance' - If not why not?
Safri Duo - The Bongo Song
I'm Not Alone - Calvin Harris

I hope I haven't offended here, but as I said earlier I would appreciate feedback from everyone on which tracks people think are good/bad and why and whether they can be classed as trance or not, and why.

Thank you very much (keep up the good work Darktremor)

Gavin

Gavin,

Firstly Safri Duo's "Played-A-Live (The Bongo Song)" is trance depending on the mix. Airscape's, DJ Tandu's & Serious' mixes definitely are trance.

Secondly, don't know about Calvin Harris as I don't listen to new trance. Too busy listening to my old skool tracks. Lost faith in new skool trance about 5 years ago and only a miracle will get me to bother getting back into it.

From your list, Signum's "What Ya Got 4 Me" is the pick of the tunes, it is a beast of a tune and would definitely make my top 20. Also Moonman's (Ferry Corsten) "Galaxia" is an awesome track, and I would easily second-a-motion to darktremor to have it installed in the Best 400 list. Also give an honourable mention for "Diving Faces", "Happiness Happening", "Heart of Asia" & "Lizard", which are all solid tracks.

Furthermore, I really like Sash!'s tracks Ecuador & Stay. Both might be a little cheesy but "Stay", in particular, seems to have a great tempo, just the lyrics are a bit overdone.

I don't think ATB's "You're Not Alone" should be considered as it is a remix of the song made by Olive in 1996. Therefore, the original Olive versions & remixes, such as Oakenfold's & Osborne's, should be considered over any later remix by ATB. The original mix is not strictly trance but is a monster of a tune.

Anyway some good suggestions however

First of all, thank you for sharing this wonderful list. It inspired me to explore the genre even more than I ever did before, which resulted in discovering some beautiful tracks I've never even heard of.
Allthough I'm far from the connaisseur I imagine you are, I would like to make some recommendations to you, which I think you'll appreciate. (I did use the edit-find way to make sure I didn't double your songs, but please forgive me if I overlooked one.) I'm pretty sure you will know most of them, but in case you don't, here they are:

Metro Dade - Andor Voyage
Pob ft. X-Avia - The Awakening (Quietman Remix)
Plastic Boy - Twixt
Plastic Boy - Angel Dust
Plastic Boy - Silver Bath
Moogwai - The Labyrinth (part 2)
Hidden Sound System - I Know
Stray Dog - Mirror
I see some Yahel, but not: Yahel & dj Miss T - Skywalker
I see some Push, but not: Push - Voyager

Let me know what you think!

#133 & #84 are the same: Claude Vonstroke - Who's Afraid of Detroit? [2006] [minimal trance/neo-trance]

It's a nice list... but it's very hard to make a top X list IMO, since there are so many subgenres of trance - each has its own merit.

Anyway, I reckon Energy 52 and Beachball should be removed - they stink of cheese; every single Ibiza-esque crap compilation has included them since they were released, lol

Awesome list on the whole though and good job.

I disagree with your evaluation of Cafe Del Mar (Not Energy 52) and Beachball. They may well be a little high on the list for my liking, and Beachball may have some cheesy lyrics, but they are still amazing songs that have been able to catch the imagination of the masses for years even though they were never intended to. Cafe Del Mar, in particular was an underground track to begin with when it was released in 1993, and never took-off until years later when "Three N One" & "Nalin & Kane" made some great remixes of the original. Just because every bloody year since, a remix has been made of the track, doesn't mean the original and the earlier remixes are not absolute classics of the genre. And Beachball was definitely something new in 1997, and Nalin & Kane should be applauded for making such a great track.

I have tens of thousands of tracks to click-on in my collection but I still find time to click-on beachball every now and then, this means to me, that the track has something to offer my ears that 1000s of other tracks don't.

This is to be no offence, but I think you are using popularity of a tune to the masses, as a reason to discredit a tune. When in some cases the popularity is just an expression of the greatness of a track.

Not all good tracks have to be underground. Some can pander to the masses. I mean using your logic, songs by the Beatles, Stones, Elvis & MJ are all crap because the masses love them.

I would suggest that darktremor should keep these tracks in his list.

The Javelin album by "Blue Amazon" including great tracks such as:

No other love
The Runner
4 Seasons

Arguably the best progressive trance album of the 90's

Recently I've been into some M.I.K.E.'s tracks.Well, they're awesome.Skipping the ones in the list and mentioned by Halcyon:
Intimo - Retention
Absolute - New Horizon
Absolute - Day Dream
Red Flag - Pacific Memory
Moon Project - Moments Are Forever
Matanka - Lost In A Dream (Push Transcene Remix)
Sunscreem vs. Push - Save Me (Push Remix)
Active Sight - Adrenaline
Active Sight - Take The Day As It Comes
Active Sight - Tears Of Joy
Push - Blue Midnight
Push - Electric Eclipse
Plastic Boy - Angel Dust (Bonzai's Extended Progressive Mix)
Plastic Boy - Twixt
Plastic Boy - Live Another Life
Plastic Boy - Teardrops From The Above
M.I.K.E. - Voices From The Inside (M.I.K.E.'s Progressiva Mix)
M.I.K.E. - Massive Motion
M.I.K.E. vs John '00' Flemming - Ice Cream (M.I.K.E. Remix)
M.I.K.E. - Salvation (Plastic Boy Remix)
Musix - Is This The Way I Feel
Armin Van Buuren vs. M.I.K.E. - Pound
I hope anybody finds anything interesting.

I've lost sleep looking for this damn songs name..... hopefully i can find thru you tube... the link isfrom you tube but it's from a documentary...please listen and tell me the song title and artist...i want to listen all over and over again. thank you... heres the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sK8gUAL6wZs

lol it's greece 2000. dunno what remix if any.

That's the original mix, without a doubt.

I think the best track by PvD is Autumn featured on the politics of dancing 1 album..its surprising no one mentioned it..here is the link

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-sOFEKlIrU

Great list and loving the banter.

Here's three suggestions:

Flash - The Day After
Flash - Megatron
Insigma - Open our Eyes

Hope you like them?!!

329. 4 Strings - Diving (Cosmic Gate mix)
Are you referring to vocal or dub mix?

ps. i would guess dub 'cause vocal < dub usually

I can't be f'd going through all the posts finding out what song has or hasn't been nominated.....so how do we find out if a song has or hasn't been nominated....can we have a fail list? To support the "made it list".

I did however bother to copy your top 416 and sorted them somewhat in excel by year(im in the process of confirming release date and version with discogs...so don't go pestering me with questions just yet)

I also noticed some song was nominated twice....I actually read the post about songs being nominated twice....

Ahh yes...Juno Reactor - Samurai....snuck in...good song though..so I suppose we can leave it there....

Yeah....if u need moderating this I can help...I noticed you still haven't fixed the spelling on Marmion - Schoneberg.

I have the ultimate trance cd it's called holy grail....and it packs a m'f of a punch!

punchanella - san trancisco
klatsch! - god save the queer
ramirez & pizarro - hablando
bizarre inc - playing with knives
capella - u got 2 know
love 4 sale - do you feel so right
elevator - for your love
gat decor - passion
golden girls - kinetic
age of love - age of love
humate - love stimulation
jaydee - plastic dreams

sadly i see only one of these songs has made it onto your list....tell what you think of the rest....

I might compile a trance list.....gonna take me awhile...still hunting 90-95 music down and I KNOW i'm missing a huge chunk of music.....

anyway let me know what you think of the cd....

Your list is...impressive...I see alot of music I have on cds on it....pity the cd's i have are mixes...otherwise I would seperate them...and post...

Ausdancer,

I too have the Holy Grail and Holy Grail 2 CD. They are among the best compilations I ever purchased. However, not all of the tracks are trance including Bizarre Inc, Gat Decor, klatsch and Capella's tracks on the first CD and Elevator's "for your love" and Punchanella's "San Trancisco" are arguably progressive house. Otherwise all of the other tracks are trance classics and would easily fit into any best of trance list.

My favourite trance track on Holy Grail is without doubt Golden Girls' Kinetic. Would be in my Top 10 trance tracks of all-time without a single flinch. Age of Love and Love Stimulation would also be knocking on the door.

Hey, this list is great. It's helping me move away from bad trance into... good trance.

Have you heard Hexagone - Burning Trash Floor? Here's a youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBZT7q86klM&fmt=18

I'd like to hear what you think.

Hi, thanks for awesome list, helped me find a few tunes that were stuck in my head for years but could never seemed to find them. Though i wouldn't agree on placement of many titles in your list (#351 Underworld - Cowgirl is my all time favorite of any electronic music genre) but nonetheless your list sums up greatest trance and trance related titles very well, kudos. Here's a few that i couldn't find on your list, that would easily make my personal top 100 (sorry in advance if any were suggested already, i didnt read all 6 pages of comments and probably some of them are not trance):
Syberian Sun - Frostbite (anthem trance)
Geniog - Nightmare (1994 was played at Mayday, borderline rave, but has an absolutely amazing tranzy climax)
Fluke - Absurd (original, Whitewash mix, Headrillaz mix are all brilliant) not sure why this wasn't on the list i'm guessing because you didn't consider it trance
Arksun - Arisen (some people already mentioned it, i personally believe it to be a masterpiece)(also Arouse Dreams rework of this tune is just exstatic)
Leon Bolier - Ye and Ocean Drive Boulevard
A.I.D.A - Far and Away (very smooth and dreamy)
Airwave - When Things Go Wrong
Airbase - Tangerine
Aphex Twin - Xtal (might not be trance at all but this tune is just magical)
Dj Hooligan - It's A Dream Song (aguably rave, but melodic)
Emma Shapplin - Serpente Le Stelle (classic+trance Adagio for Strings style)
Jamaster A - Bells of Tiananmen (also Airbase, Ian Knowles and Cloudchaser remixes)
United Dj's - Too Much Rain Over Paradise (remember this one heh? was so commercial but actually pretty good)
RMB - Spring (most of RMB production is rave but this one stands out to me as early form of trance)
Groove Solution - Sweet Memories

well there's plenty more, i'll post when i dig thru my music again.

Is there anywhere on the net that I can actually hear the song Nightmare by Geniog? I've been searching but I can't find it.

Hey darktremor,

I hope you can help me, I am looking for a CD called Astronomia from a group called D.I.D.
To me it is a beautiful album. Mine was stolen a while back out of my car.
I have seen it on Discogs, but at E180.00 I cannot afford it. Was wondering if you had a copy that you could make for me. Paid of course.

Thank you

torrents.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2588696

Hey great list! Not sure if anybody else pointed this out, but number 402 "Lio - Rapture", the artist name is actually iiO.
I personally prefer the Riva Remix over the original, not sure if you've heard it before, if not take a listen it's pretty decent.
Also maybe consider Come With Me(Qattara Vocal Mix) by Qattara. It borders on progressive house and progressive trance, but I still think it's amazing.

I have a song that WASN'T Listed

Justify by ATB

Hi there! Great list! But you have forgoten about two great artists that are real geniuses in the trance scene:Laurent Veronnez(Airwave,Capre Town,Planisphere..) and Marino Stephano, who was a big talent, but he had sadly passed away in 1999:( I wil make a list of my fav. tracks from both soon!

Simon,

I agree with you on Marino Stephano. The standout track from Marino in my opinion was when he was part of CM (Crystal Manoeuvres) and his mix of "Dream Universe" which is definetly a top 50 tune of mine. I also like the track "Good Shot" when he was part of the act "Hands Burn".

Laurent Veronnez was also part of "Fire & Ice". I really like the Fire & Ice remix of Aurora's "Hear You Calling". Also love the Airwave remix of Japanese pop star Ayumi Hamasaki's tune "Unite". It was part of an entire trance album series called "Ayu Trance", with remixes by DuMonde, Ferry Corsten, Above & Beyond & Push to name a few, over the vocals of the Jap goddess. Well worth a listen, if you haven't already.

Simon Overdose, you beat me to it. Exactly, Marino Stephano. this list can't be considered complete without at least two of his tracks up there. Eternal Rhapsody, Vision Control, etc. gotta say darktremor, for someone who prides himself for knowing about trance, forgetting about the guy who could have been bigger than any DJ today is a big slip up.

I agree JamesHolden,

Marino Stephano made so many great tracks regardless whether it was solo or part of a group. He did "Generator" when part of Parker & Clind, "Dreams & Harmony" with Kalpa & one of my favourite tunes "Bad Love" when part of Vade In Pace.

Darktremor, if you want to maintain your rep, I suggest you start taking heed of some of these suggestions.

However, I do feel for Darktremor, as it is a massive undertaking to go through 20 years of trance and pick 400 of them. I definitely wouldn't have the time or patience to do it.

i was just wondering if you have heard these songs before. if not, i (personally) recommend listening to them...

Reorder-Indecisive Xgenic remix (the original mix is more epic, but the remix has much more energy)

Mike Sonar-Luna

Sean Tyas-Seven weeks

Talla 2XLC-Heart to heart

Talla 2XLC-Salvation

Reverse-Distant destiny

Tenthu-Essencia

8 Wonders-Eventuality

these tracks are the style of trance i like the most.
hope you give them a listen, and if it isnt to inconvenient for you, it would be more than appreciated if you could recommend some more tracks that are this style.

preferably without lyrics, thanks.

This list is going to keep me going for a while.
Anyway here are my suggestions, hope you like them.
Shiva Space Technology by Shpongle - Insane track. :D
This Time by DJ Antonie (Klass Remix)

I didn't expect someone of the age of 21 to post a list like this.

Thank you dt for posting this list! I think Alone In The Dark by Airwave, Papua New Guinea by FSOL and Love Stimulation by Humate are the best songs on the list. Now I have a question. Andy Ling - Fixation, is this the original or the Airwave remix? Because I like the airwave remix more than the original.

Oh yes, another question. What do you think of Soofle - How Do You Plead? I accidentally found it while downloading Acid Eiffel. I think it's a nice song.

Hey I got about 375 of the tracks but I still think you forgot one tune that should be here for sure:

Pleiadians - Maia (1997) (Goa Trance)

Ron van Den Beuken - Sunset

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdSD-xkBqV0

Gr8 track.

I think darktremor must like this song:Magic Feelings from Alternative Art an early M.I.K.E. alias. It's from 1995 and I think it's classic trance.

Yo Dark. quick question. You're saying that minimal and minimal techno or whatnot is sort sounding like trance used to... i sort of agree on some tracks, but don't you think progressive house is in fact sounding more and more like older trance stuff? I've given up on trance, the new stuff that is... and I think its best to just start looking towards other genres to find that old trance sound.

while in the army i was in germany and recorded a hr3 clubnight one weekend in 1993 or '94 and it had a song that i really liked, but of course i lost the tape and i never found out the name of the song. All i really remember is that it had a phrase in it about "spreading my wings and flying, it is i Dark Raven." it is probably a trance track from around those years. I have searched high and low to find this song but can't seem to find it without a name. I have heard the song sampled in the second half of one song since and i'm not sure of that song at this time but i have the disk with that song and i'll put it on here when i find it. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Well I found the cd and the song and it's "Heartbeat" by Blank & Jones. Like I mentioned The sample for the song i'm looking for is in the second half of the song. And again any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again

I searched and didn't see this remix so I suppose I'll post it. This song really moves me.

Subsky - 4 Days (Gil Remix)

Here is a youtube link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bm2MdcJw1U8

Would you consider this a trace track? It came from PVDs podcast.

Characterisdestiny,

Yes the tune is trance, probably progressive trance. I think it was released about 7 or 8 years ago.

Darktremor, good work with the list, but by ranking the tunes you've left yourself open for criticism, it would have been advised to just list the best 400 tunes (in your opinion) with no rank, then arguments would be kept to a minimum. However, your post rules do seem to have helped avoid mindless Generation-Y morons from posting idiotic comments.

My biggest criticism is your positioning of Dreams by Quench at 173 while putting Gamemaster by Lost Tribe at 73. As you probably know Gamemaster heavily uses samples of Dreams, therefore in the name of originality, age of the track (which Dreams was released in Australia in 1993 and is argued to be the first real hard trancer) and in the name of continued listenability & club playability, Quench's song should be ranked higher than Gamemaster. However, in my opinion both tunes are soooo damn good that they should both be ranked in the top 50, but thats my opinion only.

Other 90s tunes that should be worthy of consideration, which I couldn't locate on your list, are the following (Chronological):

Kinetic [Frank De Wulf Mix] - Golden Girls (1992) {A TOP 10 FOR ME & THE '99 REMIXES WERE AWESOME TOO}
Emotion (Love is An...) [Amnesia Remix] - U.N.A. (1992)
More & More [Trance Mix] - Captain Hollywood Project (1992) {IT'S NOT THE CRAPPY EURO-HOUSE VERSION}
I Trance You [Original Mix]- Gipsy (1992) {THIS IS POSSIBLY AN EARLIER VERSION OF YOUR LISTED TRACK AT 176 GYPSY - I TRANCE YOU [1998]}
Right In The Night (Fall In Love With Music) [Microbots Remix] - Jam & Spoon (1993)
Outface [Syncho Flash Remix] - Komakino (1993) {DJ TOM STEVENS Vs KOMA SQUAD ALONG WITH OLMEC HEADS ALSO DID A GREAT REMIX IN '99}
End Of A Season [X-Static Female Version] - Legend B (1993)
Do You See The Light? (Looking For) [Dance 2 Trance Mix] - Snap! (1993) {PART OF SNAP'S TRANCE EXPERIMENTATION}
Celebration Generation (Chapter 2) [Westbam Remix] - Westbam (1993)
Do You Feel So Right? [D.J. Joe Remix] - Love 4 Sale (1993)
Sweetness & Light [Fanatically Remixed By South End] - Itch-E & Scratch-E (1994) {A MUST FOR ANY TRANCE LOVER, AUSSIE TRANCE AT ITS BEST}
Follow Me (Original Mix) - Jam & Spoon (1993) {THIS WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR DUMONDE'S TOMMORROW}

PLEASE NOTE - I consider all of the above to be trance in one form or another, and I am not insinuating that all of the above should be in a Top 400 of Trance, however, I believe they are all superb tracks for one reason or another and may have been missed or omitted by darktremor but deserve a mention or consideration. The fact is, there is just too many tracks to choose from in the last 20 years and too many sub-genres to satisfy in a list of 400. Maybe a list of 1000 would not even be enough though to truly mention all of the trance greats.

BY THE WAY - If anyone has New York Doll [Original Mix] by Digitale (aka Steve Hill) please let me know. I only have it on cassette. I have the Thrillseekers Remix as a mp3 but I prefer the Original Mix and would be grateful.

DARKTREMOR,

I've been listening to some of my tracks in my Early Dance folder, and I believe I have found an earlier trance track than "Age of Love" or "We Came In Peace". I was listening to "K.L.F. - What Time Is Love? (Pure Trance 1) [The Original Power Mix]" which was released in 1988, and its definitely trance. This would have to be the first trance track ever or damn close to it, and I believe should be listed in your list, and in a very high position for that matter due to its historical importance.

Also Belgian boys, "Liaison D" used the KLF sample for their trance track "Heart-Beat" in 1989, which also superseeds the other tracks in your list. I have a link to the videoclip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD5ALNAFTBg ... Frank De Wulf was a part of Liaison D and went on to make some great techno and trance tracks in the early 90s, with his mix of Golden Girls' "Kinetic" as one of my favourite tunes ever, along with Apotheosis' "O'Fortuna".

Also noticed another KLF track "Kylie Said To Jason [Kylie In A Trance Mix]" aka "Kylie Said Trance" which appears to be trance and released in 88/89. I have no doubt one of the inventors of trance are the KLF, if not the originators of the genre.

BY THE WAY - I think darktremor will need to alter his description for FSOL at Number 4 because it is quite clear that it is incorrect that the word trance wasn't used prior to 1991. Trance was used in most of KLF's titles prior to that time and the words "this is trance-dance" was used in the vocals of "Heart-Beat"

UPDATE - I also have a 1987 tune in my Ambient folder that could possibly pass off as trance. It is called "FM Delight" it goes for 17 & half minutes and is by a composor called Klaus Schulze, and it comes from his album called En=Trance. He also had an album earlier in the 80s called Trancefer, but I dont have any other songs from him other than "FM Delight", so I couldnt tell you if any were trancy.

Furthermore, possibly this guy came up with the word "Trance" first, then KLF used it and started a whole new genre. Guess only Klaus and KLF know the answer to that question.

I would go that the first trance track was Donna Summer - I feel love; maybe it's not that much close to the transe the beggining of the 90s. But it has much of the trance features, her voice is there treated somewhat as instrument, and it even has this little acid sound in background

Hey, curious as to why Seven Ways by PVD isn't on this list. That's one of his top 5 works, IMO of course.

Trance is about what MOVES you the most. If this breakdown doesn't move you I don't know what will! :)

Happy days

Wow, that's actually a very fine song. Thanks for letting me know it exists! ;)

that's the shorter version. I couldn't find the longer one on youtube it's like 6:24 not 5:13

great list dazzamack. ima try and check em all out

Thanks characterisdestiny,

I have posted my own "Best Of" list a couple of days ago, but its a "Best 1000 Electronic Dance Music Tracks since 1984" list, so if you are into more than just trance, my list might help you find some great dance tunes.

Link to my list - http://www.listology.com/dazzamack/list/best-1000-electronic-dance-music...

Darktremor I see you are now only listening to single song suggestions

can i suggest you have a list to Junkie XL - Breezer (prog trance, island trance) . The guitar melody running through this track is absolutly superb Im not generally an advocate of the use of guitars in trance music but this actualyl works ! and as with any track that has Sasha involved in the production is a must listen.

i took the time to upload the original since it's not on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWLr6x2Z1i4

remixes aren't very good compared to the original

Hey --

I'm brand-new to trance and I really appreciate this list. The closest-to-trance album I own is The Field's first album, and I love it.

I am big on albums, and less into individual tracks, and I really want to learn about trance.

Does anyone have suggestions, for both compilations and individual artist albums, that will sort of take me through the lineage of trance, starting at the beginning?

I want to start at the beginning, and work my way up, as this is a genre that I think really fits me, and I want to learn so much.

Thanks!

I would go that the first trance track was Donna Summer - I feel love; maybe it's not that much close to the transe the beggining of the 90s. But it has much of the trance features, her voice is there treated somewhat as instrument, and it even has this little acid sound in background

what about joshua ryan - pistolwhip?

fyi, your number uno track should read "Love STimulation" not simulation.

Great list man - here are a few more that would have made worthy additions:

System F - Needlejuice
Chakra - Home
Floyd - Come 2 Gether
Kamaya Painters - Cryptomnesia
Prototype - Soundpiercing
Breeder - Twilo Thunder
Quivver - 2 Notes N a Beat
Silverblue - Step Back (Silver Bullet Mix)
Slusnik Luna - Sun
Tranquility Base - Razorfish (Above & Beyond Progressive Mix)
Warrior - Warrior
Airwave - Save Me

hey Dark Tremor,, well i`m now a big follower of trance and this list has been sort of starting point for me. Very nice work. to say the list . but , can you explain me plz what u mean by neo-trance and minimal trance ?? also , isn`t trance supossed to be strictly non-vocal (IMO)?? vocals IRRITAE me,that`s all .The basic reason i breathe trance is to feel that elite feeling?? any way thankx! for the list

I was thinking of Flutlicht- The Fall as a good song... but it might not be. i just saw it on dailymotion in a video. it seems pretty good to me...

Wow! What an awesome list - you get my respect alone for adding # 365 Refekt ft. Deline Bass - Need to Feel loved - quite possibly my fav track of all time.

Thanks!

This list has really reminded me of so many awesome old tracks, and schooled me in on some new ones. Thx!

And I saw you list a few great ones from Way Out West - have you considered adding "Don't forget me (Guy Ehmetores remix)? I've always loved it.

Karen Overton - your loving arms is a good one. Love this version

HEY I'M ALSO FOLLOWING UR LIST. IT'S COMMENDABLE IT MUST HAVE TAKEN A LOT TO ACCUMULATE SO MANY TRACKS.
SOME OF THE SONGS THAT I REALLY LIKE AND THINK THAT YOU'LL LIKE EM TOO ARE-
DASH BERLIN- NEVER CRY AGAIN
DASH BERLIN- TILL THE SKY COMES DOWN
DASH BERLIN- MAN ON THE RUN
NIC CHAGALL- THIS MOMENT
RACHEL STARR- TO FOREVER(DJ TIESTO MIX)
DJ TIESTO- LONELY (IN SEARCH OF SUNSHINE 6)
DJ TIESTO FEAT. PRISCILLA AHN- I AM STRONG
OCEAN LAB- LONELY GIRL (GARETH EMERY MIX)

MAY BE SOME OF THESE SONGS DUN FALL UNDER TRANCE, BUT THESE ARE ALL AMAZING TRACKS.
I HOPE U LISTEN TO 'EM.
THANKS!

dash berlin? srsly?
lonely girl =)) dude I think you're in the wrong place :>

Dash Berlin are horrible,so are the latest ISOS and Above & Beyond's productions (maybe they are good crowd DJ's but I don't like their productions).

Yeah, totally agree about Dash Berlin, horrible horrible tracks by them and even remixes I have heard can't do anything to improve the tracks.

I guess your either going to love or hate Above & Beyonds productions. Personally I really like them but can see why people would hate tracks like "Lonely Girl" and "On a Good Day". If you dont like their productions don't rule them out as DJs, they really know how to work the crowd and build a set. If your interested track down some of their Anjunabeats compilations. They also have a sister label called Anjunadeep catering for more intelligent proggy house / trance, so although their own productions of epic / vocal trance may not be to taste dont judge them completely on that.

One last thing, it's easy to sit at home and judge a lot of dance music (I have and still do) but this is music made for being played in a club and actually hearing it in that environment makes a certain track "click" and you can't help but get caught up in it and the atmosphere...guess I shouldn't rule out Dash Berlin just yet!

1) Horse - Careful With Me - BIR Mix
2) Hysterix - Talk To Me - Sasha's Music Master
3) Kristene W - Land of the Living - Dekards Remix
4) Moonchild - V.O.A.T
5) Freefall - Skydive
6) Desert - Moods
7) Delerium - Silence - In Search of Sunrise Mix
8) Sasha & Maria - Be as One
9) BT - Loving you more
10) Sunscreem - Perfect Motion
11) BT - Flaming June
12) Art of Trance - Madagascar
13) Binary Finary - 1999 / 2000
14) System F - Out of the Blue
15) Humate - Love Simulation
16) PVD -
17) Planet Perfecto - Bulit in the Gun
18) William Orbit - Adagio
19) Mansun - Wide Open Space
20) Hybird - Finished Sympony

Tilt - The World Doesn't Know" is my favorite from this list. The last time I tripped I was listening to this song and felt so euphoric. It was almost as if I was having a religious experience. Ahh. memories.

Hi all,
here is a list of songs I did not find in the list.

1. Dj Snowman - Waves (3:41) (Energy 98)
2. Mind vs. Buzz - The Temple of Love (3:35) (Energy 98)
3. DJ Energy - Set You Free (Energy 98) - (4:03) (Energy 98)
4. Dj Franchino - 999 (5:39)
5. Chicane - Saltwater (4:06) (Deejay Parade 2000)

I do not know what is the version of the songs (it is not written in the track list).
The first three version are in the Energy '98 Compilation.
The fifth song is in the Deejay Parade 2000.

Speaking of the attention:

Chicane - Salt Water [1999] [epic trance/ibiza trance]

You must be mad.

This may be slightly redundant because there are a few astral projection tracks on the list but i must recommend "Burning Up".
This song has been haunting me for so many years...it makes me smile, cry and even laugh and sends shivers up and down my body time and time again. Never has such a positive energy ever been so perfectly embodied in a song =]

Try Sequential - Everything is Under Control (1992)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNO6V4gXuXM

Hi everyone, i would like to ask if anyone could help me find a trance song. All i know is that a guy says " Another world, Another time" in the whole song. Thanks in advice.

hi there
i browsed your list to see if there any titel i mis for my own personal list

i "ctrl F"'t a few of my favorites
maybe concider these titels :
flight path sarah g
tone twister triple concept
space harmony dj jo

but this is my alltime favorite
trippin out mishja en tim

I wanted to commend you on creating such a great list, good sir. I have followed it since... well... since I got into EDM many years back.

Also, as a consideration for the list, perhaps sampling BT's "This Binary Universe" if you haven't already. The two most notable tracks on there for me were 1.618 and The Antikythera Mechanism. These tracks don't sound anything like that post-ESCM stuff.

scratch that... those don't really count as trance methinks... closer to glitch, ambient or experimental... good for a couple listens though.

I like classic trance, stuff that was popular in 1992-1997. I'm not gonna suggest any songs, but I'l suggest some great compilations (some of it you probably know but if you don't, you could discover some of the best trance music ever made):

Tour De Trance 1 & 2 - great classic trance
Logic Trance 1 & 2 - Later volumes are not so good, in my opinion
Buddha Trance - disc 1 is commercial and too boring, but disc 2 is perfect
Classics Of Superstition - includes some of rare tracks only available on vynil
Cosmic Baby - Thinking About Myself(album) - my favorite trance album
Laurent Garnier - Early Works - this is the best stuff Laurent ever made
Classic Trance Cafe - this is probably the last compilation I bought, after that trance got too cheesy and commercial for me

Hello to everyone,
Please, please, pleeease help me!
I've been searching for a song for more than a month. I don't know the title and artist and I've tried all 400 songs on list, but no luck. I can only describe the song if that can help. it starts with female vocal: words:" no no no,... (rhythm),... yeah, yeah yeaa" and then she says sth I really can't remember ( i think she says in the end: " ....in my life."and then starts rhythm again.. I know, i know this is a long shot and this means nothing, but maybe, just maybe someone will recognize...

Please update this list when you have time ;)

Hey man,

Cool list, thanks for taking the time out to make it, will make my downloading a lot easier.

I like 'First strike' by Signum from the 2001 Gatecrasher Digital album, it was always one of my favourite tracks I think it should be in the top 400 somewhere. It sounds like trance to me, but don't know if it will come under your definition.

Cheers

Can someone tell me if this song is considered trance and if so, what type of trance?

Lasgo - Cloud Surfers

Hello,

I'd like to start by saying that I appriciate some choices on your list, although I found your "rules" practically almost impossible to surpass. But I know why you've set them anyhow. I'm alone in the world of trance right now, not one to share tracks with. I have extreme appriciation for non-commercial trance music and your list is giving me new directions what to look for. Anyway, I hope some of my suggestions will do (some of them have been suggested but let's make sure you've heard them). These are mostly modern uplifting masterpieces. Since I saw none of these tracks in that list, I felt obligated. Hope you enjoy!

Aalto - 5 (Original Mix)

Tranquility Base - Oceanic (Original Mix)
Underworld - Dark and Long (Dark Train Mix)
7 Skies & Static Blue - Central Park (Original Mix)

My head aches me and my eyes are bleeding...

Really? Is this because they're not first tracks ever made and they actually have some beat or they're not pretentious enough? They're works that remain true to trance. Perhaps not to the oldest type of trance but still.

Oh yes and try "Airbase - Ocean Realm"

Oh.. Dark Train was already on that list. I don't understand why they're called "Dark and Long" and "Dark Train" as well. Thought it was a different track.

Thanx Darktremor for this amazing list, that's a very good list of Trance Music
i didn't want to be annoying but why did you removed Rank 1 - Airwave from the list? , in fact that was the song that made me be a very big fan of Trance Music.
anyway, nice list

I need help im searching a song mmmm i think that name´s song is fuck u and is trance lyrics of one girl

sorry, i don't hava any idea about what song can be, do you know, at least, the kind of Trance it is?

Darktremor,

What do you think about opening a trance list of songs before 1997 or 1998? Since we agree that this was the best period in trance music.

I'd like to recommend Vincent De Moor - Fly Away (Original Instrumental Mix). Sean Tyas' remix and the original are amazing too. :)

darktremor - this post of your inspired me to pull a little list of my own together. I wanted to focus on trance pre-93. Would be interested in your thoughts. http://www.listology.com/liquidcool72/list/top-trance-tunes-1990-1992

Cheers

Darktremor
Love the list but there are a few that I thought should be on there like Nikolai Ready to flow and SPQR Unlimited Dreams.

hey tremor ive just started listening to trance and really love songs like robert miles - children, fable - MT brane dreamscape, brainchild - symmetry C-mix, do you know any other tracks that are along these lines.

Gareth Emery - Soul Symbol (2007)

I don't know if someone have posted it in the comments...
In my opinion it never got the recognition it deserves (even if it can't reserve a place in this 400 tracklist)
So many people haven't even heard of it despite being a piano monster Track.

i have a suggestion for a beautiful and still very hypnotic trance track released in 2002, i guess:

DuMonde - Tomorrow (Moogwai Mix)
but i also have more suggestions, too:

Airbase - Escape
Airbase - One Tear Away
Rank 1 - Awakening
iiO - Smooth (Airbase Remix)
Ayu - UNITE! (Moogwai Dub)
Armin van Buuren - Rush Hour

DuMonde's tomorrow was released in 1998, and it is a rip off from Jam & Spoon's '93 classic track, Follow Me.

I like the Ayu track suggestion.... Otherwise known as Ayumi Hamasaki, a Japanese pop princess. In the early parts of 2000 a whole bunch of her pop tracks were transformed into trance tracks by all the biggest names in trance at the time such as Ferry, DuMonde, Push & Wippenberg. They called the music Ayu Trance. Think they made 3 albums... I thought it was great combination. I especially like the Hard Trance track Trauma which was remixed by DuMonde and the ambient track "Song For XX" which was remixed by Ferry Corsten.

Unfortunately, you won't find an Ayu track on this list, ever, because it would be regarded as generic by the DarkTremor disciples, even though it was clearly something different (East meets West).

To be brutally honest, though many of the tracks listed (maybe 75%) are bloody awesome, this list still has a long way to go before it could claim to be an "all time" list. I think DT may have packed the list full of average Classic, Psy and Goa tracks, because he wanted to show to everyone that there's more to trance than the style made popular by Tiesto and/or Armin, but unfortunately by adding the tracks, the list actually reduces in "awesomeness" (IMO). I was around in clubs when a lot of the old tracks listed were released, and many listed weren't getting played, because they weren't even highly regarded back then. I dont think you should just try to list the Bonzai Records & Platypus Record label's catalogue and call them "All Time" because some weren't that great.

And, many are going to disagree but.... the list (IMO) has an over-representation of one of the most boring styles of music ever made (Minimal).... Me and my friends say there's a reason they call it "Minimal"... a minimal amount of people like it.... you get a minimal amount of enjoyment from it... and you should spend a minimal amount of time listening to it before you turn your record player off.

Finally, I've said before, that I think that the omission of the Golden Girls "Kinetic (Frank De Wulf Mix)" an extremely popular track in 1992 (on the greatest record label of all time (IMO) R&S Records) and most certainly a "classic" boggles my mind.... And to not have one single track by one of the greatest Trance producers, the deceased Marino Stephano (RIP bro), or one of the groups he was a member of (eg CM, Vade In Pace, Parker & Clind) shows that this list may be a list of great Trance tracks (there is no denying that), but to call it "All Time" is a gross overstatement.

hi, Dazzamack, how are you?
well, i respect your opinion about this list, i think there were and still are so much tunes that should be listed here on this list, i still didn't listened to Follow Me by Jam & Spoon, but i will listen to that track, i promise but to be honest ''ripoffing'' doesn't mean anything to me even though it can be not the best way to create a very great track, for example, Dreams by Quench is a very nice track, i like it, but frankly, i think that Gamemaster by Lost Tribe which has a similar ''synth-line'' to Dreams is way better, but opinions are opinions and i'm respecting your opinion.
about the fact that Darktremor consider these tunes derivative and generic, that's just his opinion, i frankly love a lot of tunes from ''Trance World'', from the early 90's to nowadays., even though i think nowadays Trance Music is becoming a bit unnoriginal to be honest.
about you're opinion on minimal, i don't think it's boring, i frankly think some of these tunes are totally awesome, not all of them, but a part of all, but i think i agree with your statement that there are too much minimal stuff here, and finally about the Tiesto Mix of Silence, i think it's an splendid version of this track, and i like the Sanctuary Mix, too as you stated on your comment, and yes, i think darktremor doesn't want this list too seem too much commercial, but i don't really consider epic/anthem trance commercial, plz, there are awful shitty music nowadays that is pure ''cheese'', Trance is not just music for me, it's a state of mind, a way of living and the soundtrack of my life, so my life without Trance wouldn't be the same.

P.S. - I'm sorry if i'm being boring, but i really wanted to give my opinion, feel free to reply, if u want to :)

Hi Socoban,

Yes, opinions are opinions... but in my opinion, if you are seriously going to critique an artform, more credence must be given to the artist who invents the original piece as the copycats are just using their hardwork to cash-in. ... for example Jam & Spoon- Follow Me over Dumonde- Tomorrow... Quench- Dreams over Lost Tribe- Gamemaster... 4Voice- Eternal Spirit over KayCee- Escape... DJ Edge- Cmpnded over Marcel Woods- Advanced... i could go on & on... BTW... Quench's Dreams is my favourite Hard Trance ever... for a track first made in Australia in 1993, it is an amazing piece of music, as there was nothing remotely similar made at that time... purely original... lost tribe used that original sound, added some more elements and came up with a beautiful track (Gamemaster)...& the track is good, no denying that, but it wouldn't have even existed without the hardwork of Quench....

Again, the Silence (Tiesto mix) is along the same situation as the stuff mentioned above... Tiesto was just adding to an original piece made 2-3 years earlier... Therefore, he shouldnt get the acknowledgement (IMO) for the artpiece, unless he dramatically altered the track or added something completely new to extensively improve the piece... which in the case of the Silence tiesto mix... he did not...

yes, Fade did indeed an amazing masterpiece, but there is also a problem, Fade's Sanctuary Mix of Silence may not be considered Trance, since it's more like progressive house, i think & Tiesto's Remix is inarguably Trance, at least in my opinion.

Well Socoban, this is one instance when "opinions" don't come into an argument. The FACT is Fade's mix IS trance, and progressive trance to be more exact, but I'm not one for splitting up genres into subgenres... so the mix is trance... If you don't know whether a track is a trance track or not, then you shouldn't be making a comment about it... My argument stands, that Tiesto's mix doesn't deserve a rating, but Fade's should...

I just thik there is way too many people on this site that seems to think that Trance started at the turn of the millennium with Tiesto & Armin as the Gods who on the seventh day created Trance...

Why did you remove Delerium - Silence ft. Sarah McLachlan (Tiesto Mix)? 10 years later and they still are playing the song in clubs and everyone goes wild...Not to mention it has over 7 million views on Youtube and close to 13,000 likes. If you are claiming it's a derivative, wouldn't tons from your list fall into the same category since a lot of them are "**** Remix". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEvE_04x-xI

I do have three tunes that you should add to your list. Listen to the entire track(s).

Sean Tyas - Lift (Original Mix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRnnvwIeP-8
John O'Callaghan & Bryan Kearney - Exactly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lllRp2-4caw
Kuffdam & Plant - Dream Makers (Original Mix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq1nbqypTpQ

DT was right to remove Delerium's Silence track because the 2000 tiesto remix is ordinary, but for DT to not include Delerium's original 1998 sanctuary mix of Silence seems ridiculous to me, as the track is a bigger classic track than at least 300 or more tracks that DT has listed (IMO).

And AudiDriver, the reason you gave to why "Silence" should be on the list... "10 years later and they still are playing the song in clubs and everyone goes wild...Not to mention it has over 7 million views on Youtube and close to 13,000 likes" IS EXACTLY the reason DarkTremor would have omitted it... because he doesn't want to be seen as "Commercial"... Because it seems in DT's mind... Commercial = Derivative or Generic... DT and many of his disciples don't seem to understand that just because a track goes commercial, doesn't mean that the track is not worthy of greatness.... It's like saying many of the Beatles or Elvis songs are not great because they were commercial. It's just plain dumb to me!!!

Just a final note... The issue you bought up about a "Remix" being derivative is not entirely true, because many of the mixes listed as "Remix" on the list were actually on the original Vinyl/EP... And then there is the issue when a remix entirely changes the original track for the better (eg when Three N One remixed Energy 52, it was clearly a better version... though I kind of liked the original Port De Bangolet Mix too... or when Jam & Spoon clearly improved Age of Love, because the original Flying Mix had some terrible vocals in it IMO)

thats a shitload of music...
whats trance? lol

Hi, just stumbled across this site while having a reminisce about my youth clubbing, when I was a proper Trance head between 1998 and about 2003.

Here are a few tracks that I think you should consider.

Marino Stephano - Free Time
Carissa Mondavi - Solid Ground
Ballroom - Passenger (Marc O'Toole Remix)
Maria Naylor - Angry Skies (Terrestrial Mix)
Lunatic Asylum - Meltdown 2000 (Kaycee Remix)
Moonman - Don't Be Afraid (Of Loving You) [Massive Minnie Ripperton Bootleg]
Unfair Justice - The Truth
Moon Project - Housebuilder '99 (Yves Deruyter Remix)

Bullabean,

A few solid suggestions. The Don't Be Afraid track and the Angry Skies tracks, are the standout tracks in my opinion. The Angry Skies track is actually by Tilt with Maria doing the vocals. I have them both listed on my list, but my list isn't only a trance list...

http://www.listology.com/dazzamack/list/best-1000-dance-music-tracks-198...

Also, the Marino Stephano track, proves the point I made above on the 15th of November, when I said that it was silly to have a greatest trance list without a track by one of the greatest trance producers, Marino Stephano...

Dear Dark Tremor, you idiot!!! Did you cure cancer? Why on earth do you think you are so important? Are you a god of some sort? How pretentious are you doofus? Do you think because you made up a list of below par songs you are god's gift to music? Why don't you get your head out of your anus and make a list about your pimples you twat!!
