Top 400 trance tracks of all time

  1. _These are the rules for posting recommendations. If you break one, I will ignore you. Read them before making a suggestion:

  2. 1.If you suggest even one track that is already on the list, I will ignore all other tracks in your suggested list. Use edit/find (on this page), or hit control-f to search out tracks before recommending them. Don't just whip your playlist off into the comments, I want you to make sure it's a)better than some of the tracks on this list, and b)NOT ALREADY ON IT, before you suggest I add it. This list is massive, and the base of tracks it was selected out of is even bigger. I don't mean to be a jerk about it, but I don't have the time to sift through records that are already on the list. Plus, that tells me you didn't think about your suggestion.
  3. 2.If you've been listening to trance for less than 9 months, you have a DJ Mystik track on your computer anywhere, or you still (seriously) find tracks by typing "trance" or "techno" into a file sharing program, then please don't suggest anything. Your recommendation is going to be stupid. No, trust me. It is.
  4. 3. Don't post "I can't believe [insert probably stupid and derivative track here] isn't on the list! What gives?!?!?" or anything even remotely close to that comment. What gives? If it's really such a masterpiece and it's not on the list, then I probably haven't heard it, dumbass (Or I've heard it, it sucks, and you just have no taste). If you make that comment, I will ignore you. In fact, if you even think about making that comment, don't bother posting, your suggestion is going to be stupid. There are literally millions of trance tracks, and there is no possible way anyone could listen to them all (I've only heard tens of thousands). Although the best tracks tend to bubble up into underground recognition (and no further), there are likely dozens of masterpieces that have gone unnoticed - this is what I'm looking for. However, there are hundreds of thousands of piles of derivative crap that directly steal from classics and never go anywhere. These appeal to newbies who haven't been around long enough to hear the originals (and to E-tards who have no memory of any tracks they've heard at any events), which is why no one who hasn't listened to trance for over 9 months should post here. If you don't know enough about trance to know that more records are released than could ever possibly be listened to, you don't know enough about trance to make an intelligent suggestion, and you're wasting your time.
  5. 4. If you have ever, EVER in your life shouted "TIIIIEEEESSSSTTTOOOOO!!!!" or said anything along the lines of "OMG OMG OMG Tiesto is such a God OMG!" don't post here, because you're an idiot. He can play records. Calloo, calay, he belongs on Mount Olympus.
  6. 5. Do not write a post stating something like "that's just your opinion! [boring derivative crap] is a masterpiece, you just won't open your ears!" [Stupid derivative crap] is not a masterpiece. You just haven't heard enough trance to know that [stupid derivative crap] doesn't have a shred of originality in it.
  7. 6. If you don't like at least five trance tracks produced before 1995, don't bother posting a suggestion, as you know absolutely nothing about trance. Come back when you're older, sonny.
  8. 7. If you don't like acid, or don't know what acid is (and weren't knocked out by rule number 2), you're an idiot, don't post.
  9. 8. If you don't listen to at least 3 other kinds of electronic music that are not mainstream hip-hop genres or played on the radio, you have no perspective, don't post a suggestion.

  10. _Here's a torrent of the first 50 songs:
  11. here
  12. Many thanks to AsColdAsIce for making this. I'm not sure if it works, but it's worth a shot.

  13. Final note: there are going to be songs on here that aren't perfectly 100% trance. If you see this tag beside a track:
  14. {arguable},
  15. then the track is disputable (or disputed) in some way.
  16. The genres essentially represented are ibiza trance, epic trance, psytrance/goa trance, anthem trance, classic trance, acid trance, ambient trance, tech-trance, and progressive trance. I am liberal with these categories, and what has also ended up on here is some trancier ambient house, acid techno, progressive house, tech-house, "minimal," and breaks. There is a limit, but it's blurry. For example, you won't find funky house, breakbeat hardcore, or aggrotech on here.

  17. Humate - Love Simulation (Paul van Dyk's Love mix) [1993] [Ibiza trance]
  18. It's amazing how little this track loses its loveliness with repeat listens. I've had it for 6 years now, and I still love it just as much as I did when it floored me on the first listen. Even the other top 10 tracks (while still amazing) have diminished in some ways with compulsive listening, but this one remains the shining gem at the top of the trance genre. This perfectly captures the beauty of a tropical sunset on a peaceful deserted island, and to this day never fails to evoke such a scene.

  19. The Age of Love - Age of Love (Jam & Spoon's Watch out for Stella mix) [1992] [classic trance]
  20. This is often erroneously called the first trance tune of all time, including by me for a very long time. Well, it wasn't. There was no "first trance tune." It seems to have slowly coalesced out of the Belgian new beat, acid house, techno, and euro-house miasma around at the time. You can look for related tracks in each of these early scenes, but none of them are "trance" per se, they clearly fall into their respective styles. And the first artists who actually set out to make "trance" were mimicking a genre that was already defined. So where do you draw the line? You don't. There was no big bang.
  21. Also, the so-called "original mix" available pretty much everywhere is almost universally actually the (admittedly superior) Jam & Spoon remix. I finally found the real original mixes, and they're not trance at all - they're inarguably new beat. You can almost hear some trance in there, but it's a seed, at best.
  22. That said, this version is a fantastic track, and still one of trance's first. It's beautiful, ethereal, and above all, entrancing.

  23. Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Three N' One mix) [1998] [anthem trance/ibiza trance]
  24. The track that defines everything that an ibiza anthem is, full of all of the excess and bombast of the island: pure dancable joy. The track's central hook is a long, arpeggiated melody looping such that the beginning and end melt together into an endless sphere. It sounds like sped-up 70's minimalism run through a 90's dark trance synth with a sub-tribal feel (it's the beats that do this). I'll admit, the build-up is a little bit cliche by now, but it wasn't really at the time, and for second-wave trance, it's as creative as it's going to get, and more than compensated by the spot-on anthem. In a not so surprising twist, this was initially written by one of the fathers of modern trance (Cosmic Baby), back in 1993 (they were always better at trance than the bedroom nerds and the corporate pop machine). It has gotten another remix every single year since 93, most of which are picked up by trance jocks and many of which go back on the club charts (the best is undoubtedly 1997's chart-topping Three N' One remix (although some prefer the 1998 Nalin & Kane version, and classic trance addicts will love the original)).

  25. Future Sound of London - Papua New Guinea [1991] [ambient trance/classic trance]
  26. Released in 1991, this song wasn't even intended to be trance - no one even used the word yet (although there was a fledgling sound growing in the underground house, rave, and techno scenes). It was meant to be ambient breaks, but "Papua New Guinea's" atmosphere was like little other electronic dance released at the time - ethereal, spacy, almost angelic, but still dancefloor-worthy, catchy, and even relaxing. The song instantly became a trance classic once the genre was brought into official existence in 1993, and deservingly so. Like it's predecessor "Age of Love," even today it can be played without sounding the slightest bit dated.
  27. {arguable - ambient breaks}

  28. Underworld - Born Slippy (NUXX). [1995] [classic trance/hard trance]
  29. A melodic trance tune with stream-of-consciousness lyrics that become stranger with each listen, mainly beacuse they never really had any actual internal logic to begin with. The melody is unforgettably catchy, and contains a nice twist in the middle, in which it goes from being a wistful and pretty little ambient trancer, to a hard and abrasive swedish techno stormer, and pulls both off better than just about anything in either genre. Surprisingly, especially with this being, you know, actually good, this was a huge hit in Europe (it went to number 2 on the world chart in 1996-97), and gets at least two new remixes every year, at least one of which always goes back on the club charts (hopefully 2006 will be an exception? Honestly, they're never going to top the original). So, not only is it one of the best, it's also the most popular to still retain credibility.
  30. {arguable - melodic techo(?)}

  31. Sasha - Xpander [1999] [progressive trance]
  32. Perfect progressive trance. A melody that, like the last 2 tracks, is atmospheric, loops on itself, and endlessly contagious, without seeming repetitive. This song is absorbing - the feeling throughout is impossible to describe, since like I said before...dancing about architecture. Just download the track. It's incredible. (Was another mega-European hit. I don't know the details specifically, but it doesn't matter).

  33. Nalin & Kane - Beachball [1996] [ibiza trance]
  34. Gorgeous, elegant, and never tiring. It's quite possible that I've listened to this track more times than any other, probably my personal favorite. Built out of tribal, yet melodic beats (the "Nalin and Kane sound"), relaxing and inobtrusive vocals, and a slow, subtle build that takes its time to breakdown. When it does breakdown, air strings and seagulls wash and flow around each other as if musically taking flight to a Mediterannean sky over a sunset-golden beach. When the breakdown ends, "Becahball" slowly floats back to earth, before spending the remainder of the track rippling back and forth between the sky and the sand.
  35. {arguable - ibiza house}

  36. Paragliders - Paraglide [1993] [classic trance]

  37. DnTel - (This is) The Dream of Evan and Chan (Superpitcher Kompakt remix) [2002] [minimal trance]
  38. This is probably the only trance track ever created with vocals worth listening to. But it doesn't rest on them, just allowing them to sparsely resonant in a minimal nothing, it raises them, gently bringing them to soaring heights with gorgeous melodies that slowly drown out the surreal beauty of the evocative lyrics. Eventually the glistening bells overtake the words entirely, taking the already flying track into the stratosphere. It's the perfect representative of minimal trance.
  39. {arguble: tech-house/progressive house/microhouse}

  40. Hardfloor - Acperience 1 [1992] [acid trance/classic trance]
  41. {arguable - acid}

  42. Hybrid - Symphony [1997] [orchestral trance]
  43. Wow. Forget Adagio for Strings, forget Protect Your Mind, forget ****ing Airwave, symphonic trance was created and destroyed with this track. Everything trance is supposed to make you feel, and almost everything classical is supposed to do can be found here in this amazing song. Easy to dance to, creative beats (breaktrance, so they actually put some thought into them), more melodies than you can possibly count, and all this without sounding crowded or overstuffed; all of it original. They even did it without overusing the breakdown. Fantastic, it completly lives up to its title.

  44. Aphex Twin - Didgeridoo [1992] [acid trance]
  45. This track is simultaneously hard, twisted and beautiful, which is something I would have considered a nearly impossible feat until I heard this, and despite being over 15 years old, it still sounds innovative and fresh today. Built on a foundation of Basic Channel-esque foggy acid lines, Didgeridoo manages to build and break like trance, while meandering and wandering like ambient and relentlessly pounding and squiggling like acid techno without sounding forced or mashed together. A didgeridoo sets the bassline resulting in a simultaneously relaxing, funky and dark atmosphere. It can sound like a trance anthem, a techno monster, or an ambient chilldown depending on how you listen, and it's all of those together and more, and it grows greater with each listen. Didgeridoo is undoubtedly one of the greatest trance tracks of all time. Whether or not it's in the genre of "trance" per se is questionable (though a connecting thread is certainly there), but in the most elastic sense of entrancing dance music, it comes out pretty close to the top.
  46. {arguable - ambient acid techno(?)}

  47. Orbital - Halcyon On & On [1993] [ambient trance]
  48. {arguable - ambient techno}

  49. Chicane - Offshore [1996] [ibiza trance]
  50. {arguable - ambient house/ibiza house}

  51. Banco De Gaia - Heliopolis [1993] [classic trance/acid trance]

  52. Choice - Acid Eiffel [acid trance]
  53. {arguable - acid techno}

  54. Ame - Rej [2005] [minimal trance/neo-trance]
  55. {arguable - "minimal"}

  56. L.S.G. - Netherworld [1997] [progressive trance]

  57. Balil - Parasight [1993] [classic trance/acid trance]

  58. Salt Tank - Eugina [1996] [ibiza trance]

  59. The PQM - You Are Sleeping (Luke Chable Vocal mix) [2004] [progressive trance/deep trance]
  60. {arguable - progressive house}

  61. LSG - Hearts [1994] [classic trance/acid trance]

  62. Dance 2 Trance - We Came in Peace [1990] [classic trance]
  63. Another contender for first trance song ever created. Whether this track came first, or Age of Love is questionable, but the quality of this little masterpiece is indisputable. Almost like minimal goa, mixed with James Holden-esque progressive (but of course, it predates all of that). It's reminiscent of being on the moon, or on the surface of an alien world: exactly the way trance should sound.

  64. Underworld - Dark Train [1994] [classic trance]

  65. Infected Mushroom - Mush Mushi [goa trance/psytrance]

  66. Gabriel Ananda - Ihre Persönliche Glücksmelodie [2005] [minimal trance/neo-trance]

  67. Paul Van Dyk - For an Angel [1994] [epic trance]

  71. The MFA - The Difference it Makes [2004] [minimal trance/neo-trance]
  72. {arguable - progressive house}

  73. Cybernaut - Hydroponix [1997] [goa trance/psytrance]

  74. Datura - Yerba Del Diablo [1992] [classic trance/acid trance]
  75. {I find it's a lot like psytrance/goa trance, but this isn't a bad thing.}

  76. Three Drives - Greece 2000 [1997] [progressive trance/anthem trance]

  77. PHD - Summer Storm (Leisure Lounge Edit) [1994] [classic trance/acid trance]

  78. Jam and Spoon - Stella [1992] [ibiza trance]

  79. Hallucinogen - LSD [1994] [psytrance/goa trance]

  80. Commander Tom - Are Am Eye? [1995] [classic trance/dark trance(?)]
  81. {arguable - rave}

  82. Phobia - Phobia (DJ Hell mix) [1991/2007] [classic trance/acid trance]
  83. What actually makes the DJ Hell 2007 mix different from the 1991 original is pretty minimal (ha. ha. no.), but it seems to do the trick, elevating what was already a trance classic into the neo-trance masterpiece it was always meant to be. Really though, everything that made the track so incredible to begin with is there, and everything added on could have been created back in 1991. But it rounds it out perfectly.
  84. It's rather dark trance. The anchoring melody is simply a two note depth charge interspersed with a transmission-like voice ("let me have silence") and a strangely affecting diva wail, held down by a circular acid line that eventually dissolves into quasi-anthemic territory (a la Acid Eiffel, which it actually transcends). Everything here is simple and effective, and reminiscent of floating in space past a rocky wasteland moon, no power in the ship, unable to navigate, fleeing alien depth charges. Or perhaps it's like being under the ocean on an alien planet in almost complete blackness and silence but for the occasional bursts of extraterrestrial explosives seeking to destroy your submarine, hidden in the deep, the power.
  85. This is also a flagpost of what seems to be a classic trance revival of sorts brought about by an adoring minimal community (some of whom floated out of classic trance-land in the first place, fleeing the epic anthem boom of the late 90s. You know who I mean. Sven Vath. Stephan Bodzin.)

  86. Etnica - Moon Influence [1996] [goa trance/psytrance]

  87. Yahel - Voyage [2000] [psytrance/epic trance]

  88. Binary Finary - 1998 [1998] [anthem trance]
  89. Note: 1999 and 2000 are the same track, re-released for more guiltless radioplay and club spinning. Although why this odd norm exists at all is beyond me. If you still like the track, just keep playing it. Don't buy it again with a different date stamped on the cover, just so you can label yourself "upfront."

  90. Union Jack - Red Herring [1995] [acid trance]

  91. Beanfield - Tides (Carl Craig mix) [2004] [minimal trance/neo-trance]

  92. Cybordelics - Adventures of Dama [1993] [classic trance]

  94. Leftfield - Phat Planet [1999] [deep trance]
  95. {arguable - progressive house}

  97. {arguable - anthem house}

  98. DJ Tiesto - Suburban Train [2001] [epic trance]

  99. James Holden - Nothing (93 Returning mix) [2003] [progressive trance]

  100. Roland Appel - Dark Soldier [2007] [minimal trance/neo-trance]

  101. Efdemin - Lohn & Brot [2007] [minimal trance/neo-trance]
  102. "Minimal" has gotten so trancy this year that almost all of the best new tracks warrant (high) places on this list.
  103. This is the only trance track on the entire list that I fell in love with during the opening bar (Those first three notes are actually truly beautiful, and even if the track didn't go anywhere from there it would still warrant a place somewhere on this list as the best filler of all time). I don't even cut this track up in my iPod playlist.
  104. {arguable - minimal. But argue with me that it's really minimal and not trance at all and I'll actually beat you down. I will find out where you live, and I will beat you down. It's got breakdowns, dammit, BREAKDOWNS. Yeah, minimal. Right.}

  105. Orbital - Belfast [1992] [ambient trance]
  106. Art of Trance - Madagascar (Cygnus X mix) [1998] [epic trance/anthem trance]
  107. Gus Gus - Purple (Sasha vs. The Light mix) [1998] [progressive trance]

  119. {arguable - progressive house}
  120. Astral Projection - Mahadeva [1996] [psytrance]
  121. Like an ancient tribal ceremony, plus aliens.
  122. {arugable - psy. But really, think about it. Psy...trance. PsyTRANCE.}
  123. Petter - These Days [2004] [deep trance/neo-trance]
  124. {arguable - progressive breaks}

  182. X-Tracks - Plan 94 (The Voyage) [1994] [classic trance]

  417. Plummet - Damaged
  418. Darude - Sandstorm [1999] [anthem trance]
  419. This track is not a sellout, and it deserves much of the popular support it got. There is not one element to this track that panders to the masses any more than the rest of the anthem trance. I'll admit, there are better tunes that should also be imported to the mainstream, but this track is still pretty good.

  538. _Note: "Not trance at all, but excellent tracks" removals:
  539. The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds [1991] [ambient trance]
  540. This is ambient house, and not even slightly definable as trance. I foolishly left it on the list for so long that I didn't want to remove it. I was quite foolish.).
  541. This is one of only 3 ambient anything tracks to ever reach the top 40 charts (correct me if I'm wrong on this one). It was a runaway hit when released in 1990 (although I don't know if it ever reached North America), Little Fluffy Clouds was another major influence on the formation of the trance genre. Catchy melodies, ambient synths, and an interesting vocal sample, combined with the trademark Orb atmosphere make this another incredible classic.
  542. 808 State - Pacific State [1989] (it's actually house)
  543. Orbital - Chime [1990] (rave)
  544. Layo & Bushwacka! - Love Story [2002] (progressive house)
  545. Ulrich Schnauss - Kneuddelmaus (very melodic IDM)
  546. Force Legato - System [1989] (EBM)
  547. DJ Hooligan - Hear You Now [2002] (Note: I had this track confused with Starecase - Faith (Loafer mix) for 4 years, and only discovered it today. I heard the actual track. I don't really like it. Besides, it's not even close to being trance. More like ambient pop, the sort of thing I always imagined when I heard the term [the actual genre sounds nothing like this, it's really just ambient/chillout with yet another flashy title] )
  548. Cass & Mangan - Green Eggs [2005] (progressive house/tech-house)
  549. Felix da Housecat - Watching Cars Go By (electro-house/electroclash)
  550. Orbital - One Perfect Sunrise
  551. Ian Van Dahl - Castles in the Sky
  552. P.O.S. - Remember [2003]
  553. Paul Van Dyk - Forbidden Fruit
  554. The Horrorist - One Night in New York City (it's seriously just techno)
  555. Sander Kleinenberg - The Fruit [2004] (Electro-house, inarguably)
  556. Dark Suite - Dark Sweet Piano (Wally Lopez mix) (not trance at all)

  557. Recent Removals: [derivative, cheesy, annoying, undanceable, and/or undeniable not trance/entrancing, it all goes in here]

  560. Delerium ft Sarah Machlachlan - Silence (Tiesto mix) [2000]

  563. Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone [1998]
  564. Planet Perfecto - Bullet in the Gun
  565. Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock [2003]
  566. DJ Shog - Another World {Quite possibly one of the worst producer names of all time. Besides the fact that putting "DJ" before your alias is ****ing idiotic, "Shog" is probably the stupidest slang term ever invented. Totally inappropriate too, considering it's an ebonic word: this is about the equivalent of a trance artist named DJ Murda-Thug. Only "shog" has no street cred as a colloquialism (ie: only wiggers say it), so it's like calling yourself DJ Fuzzy Street Soldja, playing fluffy trance, and thinking you're pretty hardcore. The track is also terrible.)
  567. Delerium - After All (Svenson & Gielson mix) [2004]
  568. Aquagen - Summer is Calling
  569. Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Tiesto mix)

For (another) particularly good trance list on listology, check out
Blind's list

For another alternate opinion on the best trance music, check out: TranceAddict's list. His ideas are very different from mine, I don't agree with quite a few of his top tracks, but if he thought exactly what I did, what would the point be of making a list? Worth checking out.

Look, I'm sorry to have to do this, but this list has just too many comments. I don't have the time to answer all of them, or to download all of the tracks people suggest. It's impossible. So, for the time being at least, I'm only going to answer questions and requests sporadically, and randomly. Don't expect to get an answer for months, if ever.
Still, feel free to answer each others questions about trance. I'll answer questions more often than requests, but as of now, I'm not really taking any new requests. The only way I'll listen to a new track is if it's ONE TRACK, and you feel it's good enough to warrant the top 50, and you've listened to at least 15 tracks in the top 50, and feel that it's better than some of them after repeat listens to both the track and those 15 in the top 50. Only if you signal to me that you've done those things will I consider your request. And if there's more than one track, forget it. Remember that I won't be one very often, so make your request count.

Like I said, I'm sorry to have to do this, but there's just too much for me to respond to.

All right, I have a question! What do you think of Goatrance? You did mention in the earlier comments that it could be the purest form of trance, though only 7 of 400 are goa tracks. Or is it that Goa is worthy but too obscure to get into a top trance tracks list? Also, that is if you have the time, I'd like your opinion on my Goa Trance list.

Incidentally, why have you labelled Goa tracks such as Mahadeva and LSD psytrance?

Because goa trance and psytrance are mostly interchangable names for the same thing. I know you say that psytrance is what refers to the "commercial stuff" of today, but I think what you're thinking of is Israeli pop. Psytrance doesn't really have any structural differences from goa trance. I agree, the older psytrance was much better, but it would be better to label it classic psytrance, or classic goa.

My impression is that goa is more Indian-like (ie sitars involved), and psytrance is more sci-fi influenced. But, there's so much bleed-together of the two (think Astral Projection who will readily sample futuristic sources (ie: the sample from the movie Dune in "Dancing Galaxy") and Hindu spiritual music (ie: the chant in Mahadeva)) that it's impossible to really tell the difference, and in the end, psytrance and goa trance are the same thing.

Your point is well taken though, goa/psy should have more of a place here. I've been working on that recently, listening to more of the style, but I've yet to find anything not already on the list that really grabbed me (even with multiple listens). Your goa list should help me with that.

(Note that I'm breaking my above post. This is an exception, because that's a very good point).

Well, actually I consider both Dancing Galaxy and Mahadeva to be Goa. I won't call all psytrance commercial, there is a lot of very good psytrance. Goa Trance is essentially one style, but in psytrance artists branched out a lot, incorporating many more influences, and exploring. So when I differentiate psytrance from Goa Trance, I mean that music created from 1998 onwards is psytrance. That is essentially the breaking point between psytrance and Goa Trance.

IM maybe Israeli pop but psytrance isn't all like that. The sound became a little more hard hitting and techno-ish but a lot of it still remained trance. Structural differences...yes, psytrance is more mechanical, less organic and has more of a club beat. The acid sounds are driving. For example, the difference between hard acid techno and hard acid trance. You could contrast Union Jack - Red Herring with DJ Misjah - Access. Both are acid, but Red Herring has a lot of melody to it, while Access doesn't have any melody.

Or, from your viewpoint, since Goa Trance came first, shouldn't Dancing Galaxy still be called Goa, as the sound is the same? Sorry for the rather long exposition, but the subject is a bit complicated. I was wondering if you've heard any other post-2000 psy apart from IM? I could recommend some :)

I've heard Ace Ventura, Kiwa, Abakus, Vishnudata, the new Man With No Name release, Ticon, Vibrasphere, Carbon-Based Lifeforms, Sensient, Kindzadza, Sienis, Calamar Audio, Pushmipulyu, Mr Peculiar, and Mimesis. (A lot of that is ambient psytrance).

That harder hitting, techier sound you're referring to is usually referred to as "psytekk" or psychedelic techno. It's best represented by artists like Sensient (who I might call the best new psy artist since 2000).

Hmm...I get your point. How would you classify tracks such as:

Growling Mad Scientists - Juice (I know I've mentioned this tracks further up the list but its really good)
Bizzare Contact - Run Away
1200 Micrograms (abbreviated as 1200 Mics) - Mescaline
Skazi - Anarcy
Talamasca vs GMS - High Vibe
This tracks are generally classified as "Full-on Psytrance" Alternativly to get a feel of the music I talking about, you could download this DJ set here

Looking forward to your opinion.

Sensient..I haven't heard of him, but then I'm much more into Goa, not really explored Psy that much.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you on this one; I've been in exams for the last couple of weeks.

I would class those tracks as "horrible", in the subgenre: "a slap in the face to all trance music." (At least, the three I heard, the Skazi, Talamasca, and 1200 Micrograms tracks)

Offically though, that style is called either "full-on psytrance" or "buttrock goa."

Guitars have NO PLACE in trance! Especially heavy metal riffs. I can't stand this type of music (which is not psytrance), and if that's what you refer to as psytrance, I can see why you hate it.

Yeah, I've had exams too :( I find some full-on psytrance to be pretty good, and like that DJ set, Juice is the first track on it, from 1:00 to about 7:00. Though I don't like the three you've heard. Anyway my point is that if one labels a track as psy/goa then people who have only heard psy, will think Goa is similar.

As for guitars, yeah distortion has no place in trance, but guitars can be made to sound quite trancy. If I'm not wrong Shpongle - Dorset Perception has guitars in the beginning. And IM uses guitars a lot, which sounds cheesy sometimes, and sounds nice sometimes.

I was looking through the discussion and wondered if you have an opinion on something that was posted a while back. It was the comment written on 08/16/06 at 2:49 PM by "Resdient." Do you agree with "Resdient"? Have you heard those CDs and/or did you go to Gatecrasher in the older days? What was the best club in the trance scene in the late 90s/early this decade?

It takes alot to keep me on a page for more that 10 seconds but your intro is a "classic"

I started way back in '89 blackburn / wigan illegal raves. Moved onto the Manchester scene 1991 to 94 then down to plymouth warehouse days and looney tunes in Cornwall.

I've loved most type of music over the years

(1)acid :

(2)house:

(3) hardcore :

(4) trance :

retired from clubbing in '98.

I have hundreds of tunes that I would like to mention but (one) that springs to mind classic "acid trance" is :
quiteman - Now and Zen - platipus 1997 (top year for trance)

Thanx for the great list

hey onefix please make a torrent or something like that of trance classics that people dont know or if somebody read this please do it im looking for rare tracks thanks a lot, btw great list i suggest this track:viridian-Sunhump the classified project mixes are well but i prefer the original mix.

73. Ronald Klinkenberg - Inner Laugh (James Holden mix) [2004] [progressive trance]

Date isn't right, it's released in 2000 :)

Excellent list by the way, but I think the genre 'Neo-trance' is arguable. Techno-producers started to make softer techno around 2000, which eventually became Minimal. Minimal has some trance-elements, but techno-elements too (I think even more techno-elements). Doesn't really matter, but Neo-trance = Minimal Techno imo.

Another minimal suggestion (it's better than some of your minimal tracks around 150):
Gregor Tresher - A Thousand Nights (2007)

2007 is a great minimal year, lot of awesome tracks (lot of crap too unfortunately)

I've looked a little bit longer (downloaded some of the songs I didn't know) and, I have to say: I like it a lot. Many songs older than 1997 were new to me (I knew of course the 'classics' out of these years, but not all these other great songs). Thanks for making me discover these songs :)

The only thing bottering me, and I don't say you have to remove these songs from the list, they just botter me, are:
Lightforce - Join me
Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone
Lightforce - Take Your Time
Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock
DJ Shog - Another World
Aquagen - Summer is Calling
Ian Van Dahl - Castles in the Sky
4 Strings - Sunrise

I've liked this genre (cheesy trance/club trance) 5 years ago, when I just started to listen trance (mainly club), but I think it's crap nowadays. The only reason that I can think of why you put these on the list is because you've a good live-experience with them, am I right?

Anyway, thanks for this wonderful list.

I agree actually, many of those should be removed (along with others on the list).
This list has been made over a 4-5 year period (starting with the now horribly inaccurate best of "2003" list). My taste has somewhat matured since the list was started, and I haven't exactly stayed up-to-date with axing cheesy records.

Slightly irrelevant to this list. Okay having nothing to do with this list... but does anyone know when Ishkur changed his "classic trance" section? He seemed to have taken Caucasuss off, and added Cosmic Baby and Datura. Did he change anything else?

Mmm, I also noticed this, though he does state that it's a "work in progress", and will be "continually updated" so I guess by changing a couple of samples that's what he means. My thinking is v3 won't be around for a LONGGG while yet, knowing ishkur.

I'd love to see version 3, but I'm guessing it will be at least another year, or probably more - if he ever actually does it, that is.
There are a lot of missing genres ATM: Electro-house, that whole neo-trance/minimal trance/microtrance thing, glitchcore, dubstep, grime, and electropop (and probably more) aren't mentioned anywhere.

Umm...Ticon - The Mammoth Hunters? I find it really boring, there is nothing going on in it. It doesn't even sound like trance to me at all. And if you're going to keep it, my humble request, don't label it as Goatrance. No seriously don't. Please?

Alright. Psytrance/minimal psy only it is.

You don't love it's bleak, evil atmosphere? It sounds to me like a bad acid trip in 80,000 BC.

No, its a nice track, but I won't call it trance. A bleak evil atmosphere would be more techno I suppose. I'd call that track minimal techno (though I don't know much about techno). Its like how Crazy Frog is a good electronic/dance track but a bad trance track. The track's all right though, a bad acid trip in 80,000 BC is good way of describing it. For bleak evil atmospheres MFG - Project Genesis is pretty creepy.

Besides, I have weird tastes in trance, I don't like tracks which a lot of other people do.

Well, bleak and evil is where trance came from, and acid trance (possibly the most respected genre of it) was often rather scary. Plus "psytekk"/minimal psy are both officially considered genres of trance (according to Ishkur and the goa hippies anyway).

As for your weird taste in trance, it's refreshing. I've been scouring your lists for masterpieces and finding a fair few (ie: the brilliance that is Etnica).

Everybody has different tastes im music, right :D

Personally i prefer the softer trance because i find it more beautiful and moving than the hard trace, but that still doesn't mean it isn't a good song just because one perosn doesn't like it

Hi Darktremor, first of all, thx a lot for that jewel of a list, its really an amazing work.

I would like to ask u for a recommendation, there is a song that i like so much, u know, that kind of song that makes one feel really good, if like the melodie touches ones soul fibres..

The song is Lightforce-Take your time, can u recommend something similar? i'd really apreciate that.

Thx again, and excuse my bad english.

Have you heard Pacific Blue - Sunrise ?

No, i havent... and cant find it to download neither.. but ill keep trying. Thx bro

superb list. How about considering/listening tho these?

Signum - Coming On Strong
Airscape - Sosei

Superb list dark, honestly great work. How about considering/listening to these;

Signum - Coming on strong
Airscape - Sosei

darktremor, it seems the list started showing complete info up to number 200; then there's a lack of data on it. It'll be very helpful if genre (or sub-genre) and production year were shown. Also, a list containing all themes you are in process of consider and get into the list (as proposed by readers) should be welcome. In a few words, I should be very pleased to have all good stuff here referred to get a complete collection of best of trance music. Many thanks, and a ten for your work. Óskar

Hey can you help me id a song>Now I'll try to describe the song as best i can in hope someone can id it.

-starts off with these big jungle sounding bass drums beating slowly in a high-low pattern. it feels like you're in a quiet spacey jungle setting. There is a bell that dings every fourth note that gets lower and lower. some hand claps come in shortly after.
-after that intro, bass drums are dropped, and some kicky bass and light, quiet acid sounds are added. The bell sound stays. This continues on for a little while..
-then the song starts building up. The bell is lost, and the acid sounds change their pattern (more.. agressive sounding...) then after it loops 7 times, on the 8th time, its accompanied by four cymbal crashes, then the amazing melody chimes in...
-the melody uses some kindof instrument thats like, if you have a keyboard, and put it on the "strings" setting, then it would sound like that. *Think of Yahel's- Liquid Love). The notes are long notes. oh, and there are light acid sounds in the background that complement the notes. Heres how it goes
starts with a med-high note (2 seconds)
steps up with two higher notes (2 seconds
kind of goes down with two lower notes (2 seconds)
then balances out with a lower note first, then a higher one (2 seconds)
then the strings play around a bit (8 seconds) to try to put it in words (oh this should be good....
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun
duunDIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN
duundaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan
duunduuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun

da da duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun
daaaaaadaaaaaaadaaaaaaaaadaaaaaaaa
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAdaaaaadaaaaaa
Daaaaaadaaaaaaaadaaaaaaaa

then the melody repeats itself. at the end of the second melody the four cymbal crashes come again, and the melody repeats two more times, this time without the bass kicking in the background.

after that sequence, it goes back to the beats, which are some electric sounds with the kicky bass. then we get the four cymbal crashes again and the melody starts after them...

this time, instead of the bass in the background of the melody, the tribalish bass drums from the beginning are playing behind it. The complementing light acid riffs are still there. then after the strings "play around a bit," the cymbal crashes come, and the song ends.
There are no vocals in this song, (if there were i could find it) and my sound on my computer isnt working now, but i can download the song onto my ipod and listen to it then...

The song is about 4-6 minutes long, i cant really remember... but anyway.. The one who finds out the name of this song shall be greatly appreciated by mwa, and i shall bow in the prescence of your username being on my computer screen as you post that golden reply....

that's ATB - Emotion i think
and i like your description of the strings part ;)

Sounds like you're kind describing "East(Opium Den Remix) by Humate and Rabbit in the Moon. I could be wrong though.

Hey DarkTremor. First off, thanks for putting this list together. It has helped me a lot as I try to get deeper into trance and other forms of dance music and learn both the differences between them and the differences within their own respective subgenres/eras. Second, hopefully I'm not just about to prove my own lack of knowledge of EDM by doing this, but I'm going to throw out a suggestion, not really for inclusion on the list but just to see what you think of it. Used ctrl+f and didn't find any prior discussion, so I don't think I'm breaking the rules, so here it is:

DT8 Project - Hold Me Till The End

Just thought i would jump on and say hi to all you guys, i have been going through the list for a while now and i am having problems getting a lot of them. I will be searching for other p2p sharing programs and bittorrent site, but if you guys have some advise i would be very grateful.

Great list by the way, i more or less agree with most of the listings. Just a couple of tracks i would of put on the list:

Mandrake - Universal Soul(Hemstock & Jennings Mix)
Bedrock - Set in Stone

Bought the new Ajunabeats volume 5 by Above & Beyond and its better than i thought it would be (then again i didn't have that high expectations)

Try Soulseek.

Hey darktremor...and anyone else who visits here and enjoys the genre. I DJ in my spare time and I came across this page and I happened to have an hour and a half session with many of these songs on here in it.
my website is pointisfive.com
just hit me up for a login and password

Enjoy!!!

Regarding the last post... i am not trying to advertise myself or anything like that, I just noticed that people were having some trouble finding these songs so I thought this would be helpful....thanks again...

BTW ....Eric Prydz (Pryda) - Europa is a great track!! I think it just came out in Dec 2007

hey check this song out
logo feat. dawn joseph-dont panic

Hey. I just recently found this list and I want to thank you for all the hard work you've put into it because there are some really awesome songs I have never even heard of before on it. On that note, I was just wondering if you could consider a few of these songs, some of my favourites.

1. Somewhere Inside - Allure Feat. Julie Thompson
2. Let the Light Shine in - Darren Tate Vs. Jono Grant
3. DaRude - Passing By
4. DaRude - Rush
5. Traffic - Tiësto
6. Euphoria - Tiësto
7. Forbidden Paradise - Tiësto
8. Moonlight Party - Fonzerelli
9. Contact - Glenn Morrison
10. Madras - Global Experience
11. Atlantis to Interzone (crystal castles remix) - Klaxons
12. Take me Away - Kosmonova
13. Heavens Gate - Kosmonova
14. Empty Streets - Late Night Alumni
15. See the Difference - Moonbeam
16. Dolce Vita - Paul Van Dyk
17. Sunlight Theory - Svenson
18. Elements of Life - Tiësto

Well, if you do end up reading my list, I just want you to know that I'm sorry for all the Tiësto tracks / album songs but i believe they are good songs. Also, if I broke any of your rules I am terribly sorry, I only meant to add to the excellence of your list. Thanks for your time and effort.

Kolton K

Have you listened to any pre-2000 trance, I mean classic/acid trance? Try it out.

yea I have. While I'm only 18, I've been listening to trance for about 5 or 6 years and personally, while some claim trance is dead and can never be found again, I actually prefer the new adaptations and types of trance over the old stuff. Times change, people change, preferences change. Then again, I've always been an epic/anthem trance guy. I can see and feel the quality of the old trance, and be able to tell why darktremor has put the songs in the order he has them, but I just find that the pace is outdated for today's youth, who have changed, like I said.

Don't you feel that the older trance tracks were better produced, less formulaic, and more innovative than the commercial trance of today?

Yes I do feel that, and its very very true. Todays trance follows a path that was set, stone by stone, by the older trance, and isn't really very creative anymore, but thats just the way I like it. I feel that this commercial trance has found a perfect groove or pattern if you will. I'm not saying you or anyone else should like it because you've no doubt been around longer than me, but I really enjoy listening to the newer trance. To add to this, despite how many, even darktremor, believe that the trance is too far gone to ever return to its original state and beauty, I believe that just like todays trance had adapted, future trance will adapt. It may not be exactly the same as the first trance and it may not even be called trance, but someone WILL revamp todays trance and turn it into a thing of originality and beauty like the old trance. Until that happens, I'm content to listen to today's trance and love it for what it is.

I'm just trying to figure out why people prefer commercial trance to classic trance...well....

watd u think of the song i mentioned?

How about including:
CRW - I feel love,
Mauro Picotto - Parade Drums,
Mauro Picotto - Lizard,
Infected Mushroom - Dancing with Kadafi,
Fictivision vs C-quence - Symbols,
Opus 3 - Its a fine day,
Fragma - Toca Me (Natious Remix) [You might laugh at first sight, but its a very good remix],
Micro De Govia - Epic Monolith,
Tillman Uhrmacher - On the Run,
Signum - What ya got for me,
Beat Pusher - Murto

And there's sooooo many more possibilities, a small selection of which inlude:

Mother's Pride - Learning to Fly
Golden Girls - Kinetic
Tillman & Ries - Bassfly (Moogwai Remix)
Breeder - Twilo Thunder
Subliminal Cuts - Le Voie Le Soleil (Way Out West Remix) [could be classed as house though, but can sort of pass for a 'trancey-type-of sound']
OT Quarter - Hold That Sucker Down
Lucid - Crazy
Katcha - Touched by God
Liquid Child - Diving Faces
M3 - Bailamos
Ventura - Birds (Original Instrumental Version)
Members of Mayday - 10 in 1
Billy Hendrix - Body Shine
The Egg - Getting Away With It
Olive - You're Not Alone
Heliotropic - Walk With Me
Blue Amazon - No Other Love
Brainbug - Nightmare (Sinister Strings Mix)

Basically, a large portion of the tunes included in the first three Euphoria albums could be worthy of a place on this top 400 list. It's a shame that the Ministry of Sound soon got their grubby mits on the Euphoria series after that and turned it into a Dave Pearce cheese fest.

great songs man
i'll add some to my list

No worries man.

Another aboslute classic that i've forgot is:
Westbam - Wizards of the sonic (original red jerry mix)

(I saw "AirBase" listed, but not this track)

Airbase Pres. Moon - Wave

Found a YouTube link

Here is the link

Hey Darktremor I'm a new member to this site... But I've been slowly acquiring the tracks on your list. I think that (being only 18) that it is almost impossible to come across music with the same beauty and imagery to the ones on this list... Thank you.

I have a couple of suggestions:

The Chemical Brothers: The Test.
Squarepusher: Beep Street.
Aphex Twin: Violin Solo.
Jakatta: American Dream.
Poxymusic Feat. Gina Mitchell: War Paint (claude Vonstroke Remix)

Cheers :)

Sorry dude, it isn't gonna happen. I may up my top 50 odd soon, seeing as how that one got over 4300 snatches.

what about:
above and beyond - cant sleep
eddie halliwell - the awakening
are they suitable for this list do you think and if so why not?
thanks

Well, as to the first track, I basically hate Above and Beyond, and I think they make sterile cliched music. Note that their only track on the list has been remixed (making it not really their track at all). As for Eddie Halliwell, he's never produced a track, so I'm not sure what that's a reference to. Do you mean Rank 1 - The Awakening (Cosmic Gate mix)? I don't particularly like it, I find it very by-the-numbers.

Hello,

Thanks for the awesome list. I recognise quite a few of those, although I definitely have some new music to sample :)

I have a question -- have you ever heard of the artist Deal? It seems very few people have ever heard of them. My friend stumbled upon one of their songs a looong time ago, and it's been quite possibly my favourite track ever since:

Deal -- Maybe One Day (Martin Eyerer Mix)

Let me know what you think :) If you've never heard it, I can perhaps put it up somewhere to DL, as I'd love your opinion.

Also - there's a newer track that I CANNOT stop listening to:

Kenneth Thomas Feat Colleen Riley - Ghost In The Machine (Mike Shiver Catching Sun Remix)

Again, let me know what you think :)

Here is a list of tracks you should listen.

Arrakis - air force (lemon 8 mix)

Illuminatus - hope (oliver lieb remix)

L.S.G. - The Hidden Sun Of Venus (Oliver lieb remix)

Velocity - Lust (Oliver Lieb Remix)

L.S.G - I'm Not Existing [O. Lieb mix]

Barbarella - The Mission

Sequential - Prophet

Balil - Rosery Pilots ( a kind of idm with techno trance) very beatifull track

Phax Ft. Steve Bug - Tritop

Baby Doc - Eurotic

I will recommend more later

hi all.. thanx darktremor for the list, you really introduced me to the real trance :P
so i've came to love oliver lieb... so here goes:
on album into deep besides "i;m not existing" and "into deep" i like the same, if not more the following:
well i love the hole album and it would've been nice if all the tracks would have been on the list... but to make a selection:
LSG - Concatenation
LSG - Give me your hand
LSG - El Tiburon
LSG - Phorous
LSG - Westside... + i'm not existing and into deep it should cover 90% of the album :)

On the other hand.. an album wich i love even more, from LSG, is "rendez-vouz in outer space" from wich i haven;t seen one track on this list... surprisingly!!!... here are some great ones:

LSG - Wrong Time, Wrong place
LSG - Lonely Casseopaya
LSG - Can you see the yellow turtles
LSG - Sweet Gravity
LSG - Every thing is...
LSG - Enter Paradise

From Paragliders i haven't seen "Change Me" and "Infra Rouge". Now i don't know if you know these songs... but i doubdt, because if you have listened to them they would have been on the list :) just like hearts, netherworld, i'm not existing etc...
oh yes and i almoust forgot: Oliver Lieb - Lightspeed (B1 Moguai Mix) :P

here are some links on youtube -
paragliders-change me : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI09jFq6724

LSG - Can you see the yellow turtles :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl4tiLzxzMI

thanx again darktremor... i really hope you like the tracks.. keep up the good work and sorry for the long post

I do need to check more Oliver Lieb out; I really like everything I've heard by him so far. But that's in progress.

there is a trance song from between 99-01 i think, it had a speech from "one who flew over the cuckoo's nest" in it.where he ask's do you understand finally?

on this flimzy basis i have been looking for this tune. it has "violin trance" parts in it..sorry i dont know how else to explain it.

I've never been able to find a track when someone when I'm given a description like that, ever. Sorry, it's just not enough to go on.

thats ok, thanks anyway. i'd given up hope until i saw the film for the first time the other day and recognized the speech. i suppose i could have been some random remix, but i dont think so cause it was pretty main stream in ireland about 99-01,thanks

hey sorry, just as i posted back i found it.after months and months of searching..the feeling is emmense.
it was "the boy wunda, everybody"...not a great song but nostalgic

If you are putting Efdemin up would you consider Efdemin-Bergwein trance? That track is ridiculous.

I would, but I don't really know what trance is anymore. I don't think anyone does. It's still going up on the list, Bergwein is an excellent trance.

More Adds

Cenith x - Feel (Legend B Remix)

Just want to say thank you so much for this list! I've been litening to trance for about 18 years now...I know a lot of these tracks but I also don't know a lot of these. I disagree with some of them and agree with others, but hey...different people, different taste. Thank you all for inspirering me! I'm not a stupid idiot but I have always had a hard time classifying trance into the representive stiles...I honnestly don't give a shit, if it sounds great who care's? And now for my contributin to this list.... (am a little scared by the intro :-) but here goes.... anything with VIBE TRIBE, AIRBASE and ASTRIX would be nice to see on your list...
Again, thanks for the inspiration..
TroelsDK

Hey I’m soooo glad I found this list! I’ve been a trance addict since ’98 but I lost most my tracks when I stopped raving(and separated with my ex who was a trance dj)… I have a lot of unlisted tracks in my favorites, I was more into hardtrance and morning trance (as we called it here in Montreal)… Some of these tracks that can still make me cry. Aint no shame, I’m a tacky mofo! Haha

I’m only listing the ones I didn’t find:) Let me know what you think!

1. Maurino Stephano, Dream Universe -? MY alltime fav, I feel like I’m peakin on mdma when it on
2. Parker and Clind, Generator ? This one is also an amazing classic!!!
3. Jupiter Prime, Gate to heaven
4. Dj Kim, Jetlag
5. Lab4, Final Chapter(we considered it nu NRG back then…??)
6. Push, Journey of life(rank1 remix)
7. Marco V, Bells(white label remix)
8. Fire and Ice, Souvenir de chine
9. Fire and Ice, Beyond my control
10. Svenson Abnea, Clubbin on sunshine
11. Moon projects, Moonrise
12. Yahel, Open your mind
13.Darren Styles and Mark Breeze, Let me fly

I've got a gazillion more in my old laptop so I'll try to add later:) Cheers xx

Ooops, I apologize, I just realised Marino Stephano was mispelled in my post. For those of you who dont know this amazing producer(who unfortunately passed away the year after I started raving, in 99), he was also producing under Parker & Clind, C.M., DJ Kalpa & Marino Stephano, Hand's Burn, La Bush Team, M. Zone, Marino Brothers, Three Concept, Vade In Pace, and Zodiac (2)

DARKTREMOR, although you're relatively young (I'm assuming you didnt have the chance to experience 90s raves) it seems like you know more tracks than I do so could you suggest some that would sound like Generator(Parker and Clind), Dream Universe(Marino Stephano) or even the first rebirth or Binary Finary?

Those were the tracks I loooove back then. Thanks!!

I want to say that I absolutely love this list and have come back to it many times in the last couple of years to find new and interesting tracks. Thank you very much for all of the time you have put into this list.

Also, and perhaps the main reason for my post, in searching through the tracks I found a couple of mistakes that I wanted to let you know about:

1) The first track on the list says "Humate - Love Simulation" which if I'm not mistaken should say "Humate - Love S(t)imulation".

2) You have "Claude Vonstroke - Who's Afraid of Detroit? [2006] [minimal trance/neo-trance]" as both #81 and #129

And while I'm posting, my personal favorite trance track is by Kenneth Olsen: "Ziax - Subconsciousness". I believe I discovered it in the old erased comments from this page so I'm pretty sure you've heard it, but if not give it a listen! I must listen to it at least once a day and almost every time I notice something new. If you know of anything like it that is as upbeat and intricate, let me know! Thank you so much!

Anyone has/can make a torrent with all these songs an upload it to piratebay, mininova, etc will be HIGHLY APPRECIATED cause finding these songs is not the easiest thing..(especially the right mix)

Hi everyone, I didn't find any french website like this one (So, sorry if my english stinks), you won't kick me out, will you ? :D
First I'd like to thank Darktremor for his work on this list. :)

Kobbe & Austin Leeds - Daze (Original Mix) 10:13

This track blow my mind every time I hear it. I was on the road towards Benidorm (Spain) when listening to this for the first time. The mysterious and beautiful voice appeared in the same time as the dozens of towers in front of me. A great moment. Get in your space ship, we're leaving. Don't even miss a second of these ten minutes. :)

Hi darktremor.

This is a great list, and I respect the classics, even though I do not have an extensive knowledge of them. I have one recomendation and one question.

Recomendation: ATB - Long Way Home.

Question: If you would be kinda enough, I know its probably not highly regarded, but I tend to like more uplifting, vocal trance with female lyrics to drive to, would you happen to have any suggestions based on the following songs, I am having a very hard time finding music from this genre. (QED - So It Is, 4 Strings - Fly Away, Erica - Relations, and DJ Eion - Without You).

Thanks and Best Regards,
73bmw2002

TWO OF THE BEST TRANCE SONGS OF THE EARLY 90s:

Lunatic Asylum - The Meltdown
Renegade Legion - The Weeping Wasteland

Just my 2c, but I was astounded to find that Man With No Name's Flooressence was not here. A beautiful track. But has to be the right mix - I think dayglo mix was the good one.

Yeah that remix is awesome

I have it in my rapidshare folder

Thanks!

Hey great to see the work you've put into this list by the way, some great tracks in there from way back, definitely a connoisseur! 4Voice3-great that you caught that one, was such a beautiful track! Same with Mahadeva, Cafe del Mar, Cygnus X...wow!
More suggestions:
Man with no Name-Sugar Rush - that was a lovely track too, definitely up there. But Flooressence (dayglo) was his greatest. Love the ol 303 eh! If you really do love back-in-the-day trance, its fantastic.

Caucasus-Guava - Another early track that is a cracker. Can't find it anywhere, nothing, and I lost the CD years ago. Powerful stuff.

Ok, and if you are really into the ol' subterranian records acid, how about that track 'SystemShock - Seduction' - on rave mission 5? That was a crazy track!

The List is great. I can't believe I'm just now finding this. Sadly I've heard about 3/4 of the list but it was cool to see a bunch of stuff I've never heard of before. Kind of exciting in a way. I love seeing LSG - Hearts so high on the list, has been a personal favorite for a long time, it's not the most complex song but it just gives you a feeling when you listen to it. 2 other songs of note that no trancer could ever do without. "PPK - Resurrection". The first time I heard this song it gave me the chills. Second is "Cygnus X - Superstring", this song is one of the first songs I heard, one of the first songs that got me really into the trance genre. I've listened to alot of different types of electronic music, never really getting into one specific type or ever really having a favorite untill I heard that song. I was hooked after that.

Anyway, I noticed you haven't posted much of the newer stuff and rightfully so. Not much out there that is truly original, especially in the mainstream. I have to admit it is getting boring at times, but there are still those producers putting out some amazing stuff, you just kind of have to sift through the mounds of dirt to find the gems so to speak. A personal favorite of mine now is The Thrillseekers(Steve Helstrip). He has a very emotional melodic sound, and even before Synaesthesia some of his earlier stuff was being used in some not so well known mixes that were great, it just sucks it took so long for him to get noticed. Anyway, one suggestion I wanna make, not even to be added to the list but at least to be heard if not heard already, this is actually a remix he did and I personally find it better than the original even though the original isn't bad either.

Ferry Corsten - Sublime(The Thrillseeker's Remix)

The song is off his Nightmusic Vol.1 album. I actually picked this album up off a whim when I was browsing around our local music store for 7 bucks. Undoubtedly the best 7 bucks I've spent in awhile.

This list has improved my trance knowledge so much. Thanks for putting so much time and effort into this dark! Just thought I would post my all time 10 Favourite tracks, these are not suggestions are some are already on this list, just wondered if any are new to you and what your opinion was!

1. Eyal Barkan/ Yahel - Voyage
2. Signum - Coming on Strong
3. Lange ft Kirsty Hawkshaw - Sincere for you
4. Tiesto - Elements of Life
5. Humate - Love Stimulation (PVD rmx)
6. Ferry Corsten - Galaxia
7. Quake - Mantra(Forever)
8. Solarstone - Seven Cities
9. Lange - Follow me
10. Push - The Legacy

Nice to see tracks from Blue Planet Corporation! A minor correction, the name of track #137 is Alidade not Alidate.

Hey, thanks for making the great list Dark Tremor. It completely opened my ears up to trance that is so much better than PvD, Tiesto and the likes. How could i have ever disregarded Finished Symphony (i like it better than Symphony although its growing on me) as not being good just because it didnt have sweeping synths and the sorts, or Age Of Love as boring.

Infact now i quite often cringe when i listen to "supersaw" trance although i didnt quite see what was so good about "Airwave" before anyway.

I was just wondering whether you, or anyone had heared a these few tracks and what they think of them.....

Choral Reef - G.D
Bass Fly - Tillman & Ries
Fade - Ambassador
Touched By God - Katcha
Church Of Ra - Digger
Area 99 - Meridian
1-800 Ming - Brothers Love Dubs

Since I've created my own top 40 list, I would place it here, for my excuse I'll post some tracks that aren't on the 400 list but are on mine:

hmmmm.....thats an interesting list.

i deffers agree with the tracks like "Age Of Love" and "Nothing" and fair play if you have "Whiteroom" and "3rd Earth" as they are decent tracks and this is YOUR Top 40

But.....

Im not so sure a lot of them should be near any Top 40 especially DJ Sammy, that souldnt be in a Top 1000. and Gigi D'Agostino.

Also, if you have Darude why do you have "Feel The Beat" when this is a cheap sequel to "Sandstorm"???

Blank & Jones position 1 & 3 those two tracks to me seem very euro/cheesy/predictable "trance".

Quite alot of tracks i didnt recognise sounded very euro and predictable actually........

Also while "Carte Blanche" and others are good, they are not really Top 40 Worthy are they????

Just out of interest have you listened to many of the 400 tracks DarkTremor had listed....surely some of those have to be in your Top 40 above the ones you have??????

This is YOUR Top 40 though so if thats what you like (i may not understand why) but it would be pretty boring if everyone like the same things.

Actually, if you could explain why you have Blank&Jones 1&3 and others like Dj Sammy so high tht would be good as im kinda intregued.......

To make the story short,
I've made a short description of some of those songs why they are on my list,
the description can be find here
http://rapidshare.com/users/GPZ6D7 pass:onelife
The three last tracks (and in some way gigi) are mainly because of there popularity (I think that I could easily place some 100 songs before Traffic).
Why Nightfly is described in that link
Why Dj Culture, simply i love it
As to Dj Sammy, on the whole I would agree, but "Infinity" is probably the best so called 'mind driller'(Similarly with Gigi -> but the melody in that song is great, and the version mixed with rap, I don't know who exactly did it, but it makes the feel of this song proud or even arogant [and hardly trance], and this justifies a place in my 40).

As to the main list, I've just relistened top 40, and really I would replace only the last two songs from my list for numbers (only 1 to 40 were taken into account) 9 and ..., no Trafic definitly must stay on the list ;).

Here are some other songs:

Atn - Miss A Day
Erno vs bastian - thrill (john ocallaghan remix)
David West - Welsh Morphology
deep_skies feat. cass fox - little bird (mike koglin deep dub)
B Project - Misconceptions (Ehren Stowers Remix)
sophie sugar - fallen to far
The Delorme - Spanish Fly
C.O.N. Sequencer - Spanish Fly
Taucher - Infinity (Phase I)
3 drives on a vinyl - turkey 2000
Armin van Buuren - Sail (Carl's B without hope rmx)
Ferry Corsten - Beautiful
Jose Amnesia Vs. Shawn Mitiska - My All (Flash Brothers Remix)
kuffdam & plant - dream makers (shogs 2faces mix)
Mark Norman - Touchdown
Octagen vs M i d o r - Metropolitan
Ron Van Den Beuken - Endless

I tried that link and got onto the list with all the songs listed but it said there was no text to accompany them.....?

Just to get this straight....is your list of Your Personal Top Tracks or is it just a Top Trance Tracks list.....becasue it isnt too clear to me :-s

One thing i would say is i can imagine quite a lot of people who dont listen to too much Trance to like them or bare the tracks on the list.

I will have a look at that huge list you just posted here as well...and try and work out your description, rating etc....once again im confused.

One last thing....you seem to like some less well known and more obscure tracks and i was wondering if you had time to look at my post a bit higher (there is about 6 tracks) and see whether you heard any becasue i dont hear people going on about them...thanks

DJ Shog 2faces Mix?

The following list contains mainly songs cerca 2006 +/- 1. Before that, well, there was still the

year 2005 which was greate for trance

Start of Short break:
well cerca 2003/2004 a kind of trance appeard (this is my feeling) from dutch trance that put the

focus on sounds, somewhat like dutch but both the sound ('not only strings') and the melody enhanced

and became more complicated, examples of dj would be Leon Bolier,Menno de Jong, Mike Foyle, (I

really thought that they would make a subgender for that, but no one seems to care :(, or am I

mistaken and there is a defined style), this lasted to 2007?
End Of Short Brake
and the 2004 year and below are perfectly described by Dark Tremor. After that was Kirsty Hawkshaw

and Electro :). This list I made with trying (and only trying) to omit
- Some (very) poular artists where rather (like AvB, Dj Shah, Ferry Costern, G&D, Markus Shultz)
- electro sound
- vocal trance, especially man vocal trance inspired by soft rock
- goa music
- some very popular songs or songs that were probably mentioned several times on the main list (to

this point I don't exactly adhere)

Each song was evaluated by me on the end meaning:
'+++' - in my hundred top trance records
'++' - very good song (100-200)
'+' - good song (200-300)
'-' - quite good song (300-500), but probably a rip off something, or too cheese/repetive

Spacial place in the list take songs that resemble the sound of the top 50 of the main list (I

checked they aren't in the list or suggestions):

good list. Good recommendations... nice to run into people out there that actually appreciate trance. Out where I live, I'm somewhat of an outcast cause of my music choice...Thought of maybe throwing a couple of my choices off the top of my head out there and see what you think:

Joshua Ryan - Pistolwhip (original version 99')
Above and Beyond - What it feels like for a girl
Robert Nickson - Kallocain
Luminary - Amsterdam
Above and Beyond - Air for Life

I wouldnt worry. Im an outcast too becasue of my music choice.

The wierd thing is that trance is like the most/second most popualar genre of EDM yet there are very few of us around :-s

I think it's because trance is now dead. Some of its DNA lives on in "minimal" (neo-trance), but what is generally called trance (progressive trance, anthem trance, classic trance, epic trance, hard trance, dutch trance) is produced very little now, and when it is, tends to be completely derivative of older tracks.

wheres special d come with me lol

Things like that shouldnt be joked about!!!

God knows why anyone would like music like that.....?

I really hope he's joking.
...
Something tells me he's not.

Its a bit like the person that posted a while back:

"what about cascada - every time we touch
it should be atleast top 5. club classic"

they never came back

Its just my luck that the only people that like EDM at my school like that sort of stuff.

Funnist thing is that they cant comprehend why i dont like it....."but i thought you liked dance music???"

Some recomendations from "Blue Planet Corporation"
All tracks from Gabriel Masurel under this project are great but this one's are arguable the best one's that aren't in your list.
Check

Blue Planet Corporation - Generator

Blue Planet Corporation - Midian

Blue Planet Corporation - Lubiantia

Blue Planet Corporation - Overbloody Flood

Blue Planet Corporation - Open Sea

I have uplouded them to my rapidshare folder.

Yes, they are a good band. They're still on my "current listening" list. I'm not entirely sure where they fit into this list yet.

Dont think u have royksopp what else is there - thin white duke remix on there, has to be the thin white duke remix tho cos the other remixes arent half as good! check it out!

Royksopp - Eple (minimal I think)

I would also suggest many others my royksopp, but you can just do a youtube search.

Simon Patterson - F16 (A bit "dreary" and quite long, but I think worthy of top 200).

Jose Gonzales - Crosses (superbass remix) - not strictly trance, others I would also recommend other lesser known remixes of Jose Gonzales work.

The Beloved - Sweet harmony

Pryda - F12

The Veil kings - Searching for truth

Faithless - We come 1
Faithless - Salvea mea -(weak entry)

dark tremor u know ur stuff,i am big into dance music especially period from 1998-2001,my fav songs are on the beach by york, the silence by mike koglin & for an angel paul van dyk.was wondering do you know or anybody else, the tune that is used on the WRC(world rally championship)TV programme?also what are tiesto's top 10 songs?

I don't know the tune on WRC, I've never watched it.

As for my opinion of Tiesto's top 10 songs:
1.DJ Tiesto - Suburban Train
2.Gouryella - Gouryella
3.Alibi - Eternity
4.DJ Tiesto - Dallas 4 PM
5.Kamaya Painters - Wasteland (DJ Hitchhiker mix)
6.West & Storm - Porpoise
7.Kamaya Painters - Summerbreeze
8.Tiesto & Junkie XL - Obsession
9.Gouryella - Walhalla
10.Allure - When She Left

I would have put Flight 643 on that list. Places 5-10. Still, Suburban Train is my all-time Tiesto fav, and one of my all-time trance fav.

Nice top btw, very nice. Still, Gouryella is more Ferry than Tiesto (as it can be seen in System F).

Great list, agree with most of the songs, but i'd like to recommend this song i found about a year ago:

Ampire - Singularity (Phalanx Remix)

Absolutely one of the most catchy and special tunes i've heard.

i think that 3 tunes from paul oakenfold's cramfields should be considered:

First Sight - Duran & Aytek
Wadi - Sultan & The Greek
Markus Schulz presents Elevation - Clear Blue

the three of them are awesome, specially clear blue.

however, useful list. thank you.

Recommend:
Pulp Victim - Dreams Last For Long
Above and Beyond - Air for Life
Santiago Nino - Believe (Max graham mix)
alphazone - flashback
the mystery - the mystery (guitar mix)
airfire feat talia 2xlc - no signs of life
aly and fila - eye of horus (ronski speed mix)
deadmau5 - not exactly
deadmau5 - arguru
fleeticer - seven seas
miika leinonen - flash (magellan project remix)

A strong recommendation of mine would be "Joey Beltram - Energy Flash" as its one of the greatest electronic tracks of all time. In the minds of some, it could quite easily get in your top ten.

Although it's more techno than trance, i'm still surprised its not in your list and Blind's.

I have to say the two lists are very good though, found some real gems through these.

Hello darktremor,

This is an excellent list and I think your knowledge in trance is outstanding!

I would like some help with two things if you have the time...

1. My computer doesn't accept torrents for some odd reason so could you send me a link to download the first 50 songs?

2. I was wondering if you could recommend me some songs. My taste in trance is varied but I don't know a lot to be honest. Only just getting in to the scene and I'm loving it.
Here are a few songs I like so you get an impression of what I like and can lead me on to songs I would potentially like:

Humate - Love Stmulation
Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar
Armin van Buuren - Communication
Y Traxx - Mysteryland (a favourite of mine)
Binary Finary - 1998
Chicane - Saltwater
Robert Miles - Children
Matt Darey - Liberation
Darude - Sandstorm
Underworld - Born Slippy
ATB - Till I come
Salt Tank - Eugina
Tiesto - Adagio for Strings
Sash - Encore une fois
Dj Toxic - Rising sun (not on ur list)
Rhythm on the loose - Break of Dawn (might not be trance because it's not on ur list)

hey, i dunno how often this list gets checked now so i thought i mite give you a few recomendations if you want them.......

Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia
Underworld - Dark & Long
Underworld - 2 Months Off
Chicane - Offshore
Chicane - Dont Give Up
Matt Darey - Voice Of An Angel
Tiesto - Suburban Train
Faithless - Insomnia (although this is Anthem House it sounds like trance)
Nalin & Kane - Beachball
Ian Van Dahl - Castles In The Sky (not particularly good but if you are juts getting into the scene you will probs like it)
Agnelli & Nelson - Everyday
William Orbit - Barber's Adagio For Strings (Ferry Corsten Remix)
Gouryella - Gouryella
System F - Out Of The Blue
PPK - Resurrection
York - On The Beach (CRW Mix)
Solar Stone - Seven Cities
Alice Deejay - Better off Alone (as with castles in the sky....not particularly good but if you are juts getting into trance you should probs like it)

That should keep you going for a while......If you want to push yourself a bit and listen to some tracks that require a bit of getting used to at first have a look at.....

Sahsa - Xpander (yuo want the 10min plus version)
Quench - Dreams
DJ Misjah & Tim - Access
Hybrid - (Finished) Symphony (Finished symphony is just a remake of symphony....which i prefer)
The Age Of Love - Age Of Love
Tilt - Invisible

Hope thats helped a bit.....DarkTremor will probs give you a ton more

Thanks for your recommendations ;)
Can u give me a link to download the first 50 because my pc doesn't support torrents...
Thx!

hey, sorry for the late reply. No problem for the recomentdations.

Im not very good at computers so im not sure what you mean about a torrent link (arnt they like a download thing...?)

If you download soulseek they have basically all these tracks on there and so you can download the first 50 off there....otherwise iTunes has quite a lot if you dont mind paying.

If you explain the torrent thing i can see what i can do

Well this 'torrent' is a link to download the songs but it only works if you download certain software...
My pc won't let me download this software...
I was wondering if you had a link from where I could download all of the songs hosted by rapidshare or something like that...
If you don't have a link for that then could you possibly perhaps just host the following songs on rapidshare for me please?
The Age Of Love - Age Of Love
Humate - Love Stimulation (Paul Van Dyke’s Love Mix)
Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Three ‘N’ One Mix)
Y Traxx - Mysteryland
Binary Finary - 1998
Chicane - Saltwater
Chicane - Offshore
Robert Miles - Children
Underworld - Born Slippy (NUXX)
ATB - Till I come
Salt Tank - Eugina
Sash - Encore une fois
Hybrid - Finished Symphony
Sasha - Xpander
LSG - Netherworld
Balil - Parasight
LSG - Hearts
Push - Strange World
Datura - Yerba Del Diablo
Yahel - Voyage
The Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia
Leftfield - Phat Planet
Tiesto - Suburban Train
Art Of Trance - Madagascar (Cygnus X remix)
Cygnus X - Superstring
James Holden - Horizons
PPK - Resurrection
4Voice - Eternal Spirit
This is because my pc won't let me download soulseek and so I can't download the songs :'(...
I would appreciate it if you could send me a link or host the files yourself.
Thank you in advance!
:D

hey, once again sorry for the late reply. I have worked out the rapidshare thing so i will get working on that and let you know when its ready.

BTW is it going to be a problem if the ones i upload are from a mix CD??? Its just that most of my music comes from Mixed CD's so there will be a a bit of each song either side of the track and they wont be as "clean" in and out of the track if that makes sense???

If that is all you have then that is fine but if you have the original version that would be better.
Having said that I thank you very much for going through this trouble for me!!!! It is EXTREMELY kind of you :D !!!!

hey, i didnt realise it would take so long to upload the songs.....will try and get it done asap!

Why don't you simply get Soulseek?

Sadly Soulseek doesn't work on my version of windows vista :(

hey, the first lot of tracks you listed i have uploaded....up to 9pm (till i come).

User: properjob
Password: trancetracks

I will do the others soon!

Heya, thanks a lot for the tracks u uploaded atm but i just downloaded one and tried to open it but it was encrypted on iTunes and needed a password... is there any way i can get past this?
Thanks a lot !
:D

Hello properjob,

I was just wondering if you could still add the songs I listed or if you are too busy I understand... :)

Thanks

hey any recomendations for some chill out trance?

Katcha - Touched by God

And make sure its the original mix for the chillout version.

Right this is going to sound proper stupid but here goes.....

What is the difference between Epic Trance and Anthem Trance???

How can you tell the two apart???

I know what they are combined i.e i can tell what is epic/anthem trance but i cant tell them apart.

Is it to do with song structure i,e Epic is more like a pop song or prehaps the sounds of the music i.e Epic has more commercial friendly sounds???

Im slightly annal with my music on iTunes and want to put every trance song i have in the correct genre

thanks

Afaik anthem is the breakdown formula, and epic is uplifting trance, I guess you could have a track which is uplifting and uses a breakdown, and is therefore both epic and anthem.

Thanks for replying....i had also asked on Ishkur's Forum on his w/site and started WW3....aparently there are some people that are rather passionate about what is and what is not Epic/Anthem! Its got quite heated actually.

Ishkur basically said....

Anthem: "Harder" sound, Big break down with snare role out of it. More music you "loose it to"

Epic: Slower tempo, cutesy melody, more hands in the air stuff. Often has vocals.

But yeah, there is quite a lot of cross over like Tiesto's Suburban Train...it has the big breakdown and hardish sound....but on the other hand its "hands in the air" music.

Hehehe WW3 ;-) Well genrefication gets a little tiring after a point. Who gives? All that matters is whether its good or not. Though this might sound hypocritical if you're read my posts on differentiating goa and psy =P

No joke....it got pretty heated on there. I had basically asked Ishkur because it was his guide and all so i wanted his opinion but there was this one guy that just wouldnt let it drop. Thats basically what i said in the end....Anthem/Epic tramce isnt meant to be seriously analysed bit by bit its a fun genre thats meant to be enjoyed.

Well im with you...i can hear a difference between Goa/Psy....Goa sounds more (as you say) organic like thats the Aliens voices, brainwaves or what have you and then Psy sounds more harder (less acidy) more like thats the sound the aliens machines make (or that might just be me!!!)

How many different styles of Goa/Psy are there??? I was under the inpression that there were lots????

It depends on your ear, here are some. In Goa you can have
morning/uplifting (Astral Projection,Electric Universe - One Love)
melodic (Paradise Connection,Blue Planet Corporation-Blue Planet)
more acidic stuff (Doof - Lets Turn On),Dark (MFG - project genesis,UX)
tribal (Elysium-Monzoon, ambient (Etnica - Equator)
There is also a style called Nizhonot which I haven't explored too much.

I'm not as well-versed with psy as I am with Goa. Psytrance is simply put, HUGE. Its impossible for anyone to keep up with everything happening. Simplified, you basically have
uplifing again(Ziki - Eliminator)
ambient/chill (Darshan - Spectra)
Full-on (GMS,Eskimo)
Dark (Hux Flux - Reboot)
Very Dark(Winter Demon) I guess you may not diffrentiate between dark and very dark, but nowadays there are some really techish, and dark tracks out there with basslines that go RRRRRR
Breaks (Digitalis (2nd CD on Shakta's Feed the Flame)(Spirillianz)
Tribal (The Nommos)
Minimal (Human Blue - Ice,Shiva Chandra - Auricular)
Proggy (Astrix)
Stuff thats just acidic and psychedelic (Hallucinogen - The Lone Deranger,Fractal Glider - Parasite)
Melodic or goa-ish(IM-the gathering,Talpa - The Art of Being Non)
Tech-ish stuff (Spirillianz)

Thanks for that link...i will check it out!

I think that Nizhonot is a mix of Anthem and Psy trance from Israel...?

Appreciate your list, good work. I've been into classic trance lately and have some suggestions for you:

1) Goahead - Freebeach (Anjuna mix) Altough the name may confuse you, its pure classic trance, not goa trance.
2) Paragliders - Oasis (Sheikh mix)
3) LSG - Unreleased albom [2002] Not classic trance, LSG's album that wasn't released, the last work of Oliver Lieb under the LSG alias. It's a set, not breaken down into tracks. Really different from LSG's previous works, its more ambient. Can be found on Oliver Lieb's blog at myspace.
4) Brainchild - Synfonica
5) LSG - Lonely Casseopaya
6) Lost Tribe - Distant Voices (Angel Mix) From Northern Exposures 2, break trance/progressive trance
7) Lost Tribe - Under The Red Sea, progressive trance

This might be a matter of personal taste, but I think that Gabriel & Dresden's Arcadia is one of the best works of the 2000s and deserves a placement in the top 100

They are all Good suggestions.
Brainchild - Synfonica and Goahead - Freebeach (Anjuna mix) are monsters tracks from Eye Q label
That oasis remix is good and a lot diferent from original but the original still the best at lest for me.

I salute your knowledge of trance. I've been into trance since '94. But as you said, things have changed and its going in every which way but forward. Curious on your input with a couple tracks that have been favs of mine for a while

Compound - Waverunner

Colin Barratt - Stop the rock

Check this one's

Java(Oliver Lieb) - Cosmos
Mirage(Oliver Lieb) - Air Born
Earth Nation - Alienated ( Earth Mix) »»» Goa at Best
Cenith X - Feel [Legend B Remix]
CJ Bolland - Mantra
CJ Bolland - The Tower Of Naphtali
CJ Bolland - Con Spirito
CJ Bolland - Camargue
Paragliders- Paraglide (Humate Mix)»»» this is a awesome remix of a beatifull track
Humate - Spacetribe »»» so beatifull and energetic

I think all deserve to be in your list and some of them at top 100

I have uploud them to rapidshare
