Why add to the canon of top 100 lists you may ask? Aren't there already far too many? Well there are but I find they often have faults. A great majority of them have Godfather, Starwars, or the egregious Shawshank Redemption at the top and continue in the same banal vein. Personally, of the trilogy, I prefer Godfather III (bet that set the cat amongst the pigeons!) but it wont make this top 100. Similarly this list will not be a hidebound list of socially worthy arthouse movies, so no Bertolucci, late Godard (ie his emetic Eloge de l'amour), no Nicholas Ray etc. There are a few brooding, ponderous movies (L'elisse, L'avventura, Nashville), but I have tried to avoid putting these in. Almost the sole criteria is to astonish, the top 20 of the list are all what I would describe as jaw-droppingly good movies. Further down the list this type of movie is interspersed with some concession to other criteria, there are a few comfort films, noirs, westerns and adventures endlessly repeated.

Wow, great list. I'm going to have to keep coming back to this one. The few I've seen I've really loved, and many of the others I've never even heard of!
