Top 10 Songs This Week [Now fully loaded with torrents!] (2/19/09)

  • 10. Apples
  • Album: A Thousand Shark's Teeth
  • Artist: My Brightest Diamond
  • Genre: Indie/Acoustic/Avantegarde
  • Year: 2008
  • Torrent: Here
  • Why?: Wow. This album is unlike anything I have ever heard. Her voice seems to flow like honey out of a jar. It's like a mix of Björk and Feist...but very different. Absolutely stunning album, and I only chose this song because it is the strangest (darktremor this song reminds me of your music taste), and the one that really struck me as being beautiful and exquisite at the same time. It saddens me that this isn't the "brightest diamond" out there, it is barely known as far as I can tell. A must have, and the only reason it isn't higher on the list is because I just got it yesterday.
  • 9. English House
  • Album: Sun Giant EP
  • Artist: Fleet Foxes
  • Genre: Folk rock/Indie Rock
  • Year: 2008
  • Torrent: Here
  • Why?: Wow, I rarely come across an EP that I love half to death on a accidental download. When I added this to my library I was thinking "Where the hell did I get this?!", and ever since then I've been in my happy place with this album. This really caught me off guard (in a very good way), and once I start listening to this EP I have problems moving away from it. Almost perfect.
  • 8. Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits
  • Album: 69 Love Songs
  • Artist: The Magnetic Fields
  • Genre: Synth-pop/New beat/Neofolk
  • Year: 2000
  • Torrent: Here (Vol. 1-3)
  • Why?: Well I absolutely love rabbits, but I love the lyrics even more. The album on a whole is nice and fun, but 69 songs makes it very difficult to be utterly amazing, and I still have not listened to the whole thing, but this song by itself is worth the download. The music is well played and the voice is great.
  • 7. In a Beautiful Place Out In the Country
  • Album: In a Beautiful Place Out In the Country
  • Artist: Boards of Canada
  • Genre: IDM/Ambient
  • Year: 2000
  • Torrent: Here
  • Why?: Well, it's Boards of Canada. That is enough for me, but to appease the reader, I'll just say - it's Boards of Canada. My favorite songs on this EP keeps changing, but this is a very strong track that I keep coming back to. Zoetrope seems to be the one song that is wishy-washy. Sometimes I love it, other times I just press "skip". Depends on the mood I suppose. Great album nonetheless, and it's only four songs. If you enjoy BoC, this album is a must have.
  • 6. The Dead Flag Blues
  • Album: F# A# (Infinity)
  • Artist: Godspeed You! Black Emperor
  • Genre: Post Rock
  • Year: 1998
  • Torrent: Here
  • Why?: It took me some time to really fall in love with this album. I'd enjoyed Lift Your Skinny Fists... but very slowly this album became more attractive to me. I love how they vary in each song, they totally change the beat, the mood, everything, and it's done perfectly. If there was ever a song to be played at my funeral, this one would be it.
  • 5. June Evenings
  • Album: No Way Down
  • Artist: Air France
  • Genre: Leftfield/Downtempo/Synth-pop/Ballad/Disco
  • Year: 2008
  • Torrent: Here (for some reason mine has 10 songs...must be a mistake on my part)
  • Why?: This album seems to get a fairly average rap, but from the number of times I've listened to it I disagree. The fact that I've put this album on repeat a number of times says they did something right. Very much worth a download.
  • 4. Mash Up Yer Know (V.I.P. mix)
  • Album: A.W.O.L A Way Of Life - Live
  • Artist: Aladdin (Album is various)
  • Genre: Drum n Bass/Jungle
  • Year: 1995
  • Torrent: Here (the only one I could find with a seeder)
  • Why?: I'm not one for DnB or Jungle really, and I decided to check this album out just to open up my taste in the genre since I had heard some good things about it, and holy shit was it extraordinarily difficult to get. There are about 2 dozen torrents of this album with no seeds and about 12 leechers. I looked it up on soulseex and there was nothing. Not a hint of this album. FINALLY I came across it by pure luck, and it was one of the original recordings. I got extremely excited and started downloading the album. It was strange though, because the album was titled "dubs (top secret)". Next thing I know I'm banned. So I contact the guy and ask him to unban me, and he does...but then he realizes what I'm DL, and he says "I'll let you have this album, it was given to me personally, but you must NEVER share it with anyone else." (those exact words). So I'm happy, and the album is much better than what I was expecting (maybe it was just the difficulty of achieving it that made it better), but this is worth the find...if you can find it.
  • 3. You Are the Worst Thing In the World (Invol2ver Remix)
  • Album: Invol2ver
  • Artist: Telefon Tel Aviv (Album is various)
  • Genre: Progressive Trance
  • Year: 2008
  • Torrent: Here
  • Why?: So I DL this album for two reasons. 1. It's Sasha and 2. I like Involver - a lot. When I turned it on I was immediately in my happy place, and this song (it's song #2) blew my happy place out of the motherfucking water. I was jumping all around the room like I do when I start the Goa Trance, and it started it so loud that my friend down the block called me and asked me to please turn down the bass. When the beat started I loved it, quite a bit in fact. But when his voice came on (I have a weak spot for perfectly electronically modified unique voices) I had an orgasm. Right then and there. So I got on AIM and started sending the song to all of my friends. Next thing you know we are having a video dance chat and getting calls from our neighbors to "turn that shit down." I realized this later when they came over and complained to my mother that night. Oh well, just their fault they have bad music taste. Oh and the original is shit compared to this version.
  • 2. Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping
  • Album: Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill
  • Artist: Grouper
  • Genre: Folk Rock/Drone/Ethereal/Ambient/Experimental
  • Year: 2008
  • Torrent: Here
  • Why?: One review that I read called this "ambient shoegaze." Now if that doesn't attract your attention right there, then...I don't know, it should. Once again, a hidden gem. It was difficult to get a hold of (though not as difficult as AWOL..that was harder to get a hold of than Aglaia - Three Organic Experiences), but well worth the wait. My expectations started out fairly high after I read the reviews, and it passed the test with flying rainbows and more. You can rarely understand what she is saying, but it doesn't matter at all in this case. Her voice takes you in and steals you away from everything, and all you want to do is just sit there and roll in the beauty. The music adds to the affect, and song after song just flows into the next and before you know it your repeating the album over and over and over and you just want to make love to the music. You want to love it all over the place (If you don't like my analogies too bad, they are meant to make you smile and understand) and never stop. All the songs are pure love, and I just picked this one because it seems that my friends like it the most out of all of them (I couldn't decide....I really couldn't for once in my life). If I could make love to an album, it would be this one.
  • 1. White Diamonds
  • Album: Friendly Fires
  • Artist: Friendly Fires
  • Genre: New Wave/Indie
  • Year: 2008
  • Torrent: Here
  • Why?: Because it is more fun than any other album on this list. I went to my friends party and started playing this music and they all stopped what they were doing and just started dancing. Well, not really, I started dancing and everyone followed in suit, which seems to happen quite a bit. I'm like the ice breaker. Anyway, this entire album is my favorite since I got it. It's been played 21 times since I got it. These guys made an album that has every song being very similar, but very different. If you even kind of like Indie and an addictive bass and a unique voice you will adore this album. Strangely this song isn't all that popular, which I find baffling since it has been my favorite since I first heard it. Oh, and is it just me or does Lovesick sound like a Queen song?
Author Comments:

I hope this list adds to your library in a positive way, and if it doesn't...oh well, I got ya to listen to something different XD. But I truly hope you like it, and PLEASE let me know your opinions of these songs/albums/artists. If you think I might like something similar to what's posted (or different) then let me know, I will listen to it, and probably sooner rather than later.

Oh, and a special thanks to Menindrag for letting me know about Godspeed, and of course thank you to darktremor for the list. I DL off of them almost religiously. I hope you enjoy! Comments appreciated, and if you think a choice I made is some of the worst music ever created, I would love to hear it (not bein' sarcastic). I value second and third (etc.) opinions very much. It's hard being a noobie at music and having nothing but lists to lead the way.

I'll get torrents later.

Cool, good tracks.

I am indeed a fan of your number 1 choice (among others). Friendly Fires is a lot of fun, and plus they're one of the only bands my 14-year-old sister and I agree on. I haven't listened to any of their tracks anywhere near 21 times though.

Haha I know that feeling all too well. Try showing your music to a brother who's not into the genre at all. Very annoying.

But you should (if you haven't already) check out #10, 9, 5 and 2. If you have already got them I would love to hear your opinion.

I love both Fleet Foxes and Air France. I'll check the other 2 out for sure.

Cool, let me know what you think : ). Does this look like a good fun nice event to you? Is the lineup any good? My friend is thinking about taking me there for my birthday present, and we only live a few hours away, but I don't want to waste $80+ on something that won't be a fucking blast. Oh, and it will be my first real experience.

Looks awesome. I'd go. It seems like it's got a trance room, a house room, and probably a jungle/dubstep room (since I know none of the names, and it's called "Bassrush" I suspect it's jungle/dubstep). It's a nice mix of big names and unknowns.

Have fun!

Sweet! We are going, and I am very much looking forward to whatever happens. He isn't into the genre all that much, but he still enjoys it (my friend that is taking me). I think my only problem is going to be in picking which room to dance/chill in XD!

Thanks =D!

Haha, looks like it considering the line-up. You'll have an awesome time.
