I agree with you whole-heartedly on almost all of these, but I must take issue with the Charlie Chaplin addition. Lord, I love him, and think he's the funniest EVER, but I think Buster Keaton is the better director (and it hurts me to say that). He was more innovative and camera-conscious than Chaplin, who took a much more conservative and traditional approach to directing. Just look at Keaton's Sherlock Jr. to see what I mean.
both of those directors are very good. They didn't make my list because their styles are dated and seem a little outclassed by the new wave french directors and the great american guys that emerged.
Notable Exceptions From This List: Charlie Chaplin, Frank Capra, Akira Kurosawa, Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Steven Spielberg
Spielberg should be in there. I guess I'll have to bump Lumet.
Spielberg instead of Wilder?!?!?!?!

I'm curious... Did you consider Bergman when you constructed your list?
Shalom, y'all!

I considered Bergman,Truffuat,Fellini and De Sica.
I found these directors to be close but no cigar, although I love their work!!
Obviously, you forgot the visionary who directed Liquid Sky.
Liquid Sky is a horrible movie that steals from many other directors.
