The Stones Best vs. the Beatles Best

Tags:
  • 1. The Epic: Gimmee Shelter vs. A Day in the Life (while Gimmee Shelter is forever contextualized by Altamont, as pure studio creativity, the Beatles win).
  • 2. Devilish Rocker: Sympathy for the Devil vs. Helter Skelter (I again go with the Beatles here because it is not as overplayed).
  • 3. Relationship Song: Under My Thumb vs. For No One (both great, but I love the opening to UMT).
  • 4. Drug Song: Sister Morphine vs. I am the Walrus (two very different songs, I guess it depends on the mood, I cop out and say a tie).
  • 5. Pretty Lament: As Tears Go By vs. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away (both very sad songs, but I think Lennon is unrivaled on this song).
  • 6. Unforgettable Riff: Jumpin Jack Flash vs. I Want You (She's So Heavy) (I go with JJF because it is tighter and shorter).
  • 7. Masterpiece: Satisfaction vs. Strawberry Fields (both played too often, but while Satisfaction has become a caricature, Strawberry Fields is sad after December, 1980).

Interesting list. I think "For No One" is a far better song than "Under My Thumb" but they both play out to very different sides of the relationship.

"For No One" vs. "Factory Girl" would be fairer.

An additional one:

Political Song: Street Fightin Man vs. Revolution 1 (I like SFM b/c it was not used in a commercial, but I should blame that on Michael Jackson)

Secondary Singer Song: Happy vs. Long, Long, Long (I have to go with the Beatles b/c that is my favorite song)
