Sounds (apart from general music) that I really like

Tags:
  • A baby's laughter
  • The chirping of birds as the dawn breaks...
  • The sound of rain falling on a metal roof
  • The sound of a waterfall
  • The sound of water gushing along a river as it gently flows against the riverbed rocks
  • The 'splash' and 'plonk' sound when a stone is thrown in a pond and it skims for about two jumps and then sinks
  • The 'yelp' of a dog
  • The sound of a bike being revved up!
  • The rythmic sound of a train travelling along a rail track. It's actually pretty hard to describe it... it goes like (rapidly) tada tada (and then slowly) tat tat tat...it's hypnotic.
  • Echos off a mountain cliff
  • The sound of a group of friends maniacally laughing for no reason at all
  • The MSN Messenger contact sign-in sound
  • The bagpiper being played
  • The sound of the wafer crumbling under the chocolate layer in a wafer-choco chocolates
  • A cat purring
  • The 'metal crunch' that was first intoduced in The Streets of Sim City , and now is extremely overused and popular
  • The sound of the waves crashing along the rocks
  • The trademark Nokia ringtone. Because of it's sheer simplicity.
  • The 'cling' of a cash register
  • The DJ 'scratch' sound... it's been waay too much overdone, but still is awesome , if placed at the right time in the right song.
  • A crowd laughing appreciatively at something you've said and/or done. OR A crowd applauding your performance. OR A crowd laughing so hard at something you've said or done, that they actually applaud.
  • The sound of a distant airplane.
  • Horn of a ship about to take off.
  • Wind rushing by, especially wind rushing past a grand scene, as in mountains. Majestic.
  • Crickets chirping at night, lulling you to sleep.
  • The sound of a distant owl and wolves on a moonlit night.
  • The mournful call of a loon.
  • Looping a sound over and over again
  • Cars moving at high speed
  • Church bells calling out at an hour. Nice!
  • That little BOOOWNNN sound as a Playstation is turned on

Sounds in day-to-day life that cause my face to break into a smile

Great idea, by the way.

Personal happy sounds:

My dog's a Beagle and is very vocal, I cringe with cute-sympathy when she goes into a yawn and then howls. If I ever get that recorded it is my duty to share it.

Songs played just at the right moment in the right place, though not only just in cinema. Or just when I remember songs that perfectly describe a moment while its happening. Like my triumphant last day of school, with Coldplay's 'Yellow' going on in my head, etc., there should be plenty of examples.

By the way Merlin, I'm really enjoying your posts. I can identify with all of them, keep up the good work.

A dog's yelp or yawn is one of the most beautiful sounds..I agree :). I love dogs...all sorts of em...:)! As a matter of fact, I plan to have at least 3 of 'em when I can afford to buy 'em (am still a student you know).. Btw, please , please share the sound of your Beagle... I would really really love that :)

Another example of the right song at the right time - Bryan Adams' Heaven when you're ... 'emparadised in the arms of your beloved' (I quote from the author Milton)... perfect :) and when you've just been dumped - Blue and Elton John's Sorry Seems to Be... man! music truly is the soul of life!

Hey thanks man! It feels good to know someone sharing the same ideas as me :):):) I'll try to keep up the work :)

Re: "I love you" - any language, anyone (as long as it doesn't have homosexual intentions:) ), anywhere :D

Be careful what you wish for...

?

I speak from experience...I mean not from a member of the same sex of course.

@Odysseus>>> The words of a true biggoted ignorant a*hole. Shame on you.

0dysseus was merely referencing an item that used to be on this list, not making a separate comment. Even then, I think Merlin intended the side comment as tongue-in-cheek, although he (I think wisely) removed it. 0dysseus is (was? Haven't seen her in a while) actually one of the smartest and most open-minded people on here, which you'd probably know if you'd been around a little longer.

How about...
A crowd laughing appreciatively at something you've said and/or done. OR A crowd applauding your performance. OR A crowd laughing so hard at something you've said or done, that they actually applaud.
The sound of a distant airplane
The doorbell
That little BOOOWNNN sound as a Playstation is turned on (I don't know why I like this, I figure other people might like it too)
Wind rushing by, especially wind rushing past a grand scene (in other words: the noise of the top of an enormous mountain). Has always seemed to me like majesty encapsulated in a single sound.
Croaking frogs, especially at night.
Crickets chirping at night, lulling you to sleep.
The sound of a distant owl.
The mournful call of a loon.

Great list BTW, definitely one of those "Wish I'd thought of that!" situations.

Crowd applause is something that always gives a high. Ego booster, to say the least :).
Doorbells....aargh! I've got this really ridiculous bell at the place where I'm putting up that continously goes ding/ding/ding even if you just press it once for just one f*cking second. Somehow it really makes me cringe in pain... the one at my home is ok... somehow I've never found bellrings ecstacy inducing.
You're quite the nature lover it seems:)...wind howling past your ears when you drive all alone at 70kmph on a deserted road along mountain peaks..now THATS something! But I agree... standing atop peaks has a different power to it...as a kid I used to amuse myself by thinking how cool it would be if I jumped off the cliff...it's more humbling an experience now (standing I mean).
Crickets have held my scientific amusement ever since I was a kid... ever observed? As soon as you walk near to the source of the sound, they stop chirping, but if you stay long enough, they again start it off. It's also said that the number of chirps per minute is realted to the temperature (I forget how)... still it is really nice, unless you are my sister who screams at the top of her lungs at the mere "Crickettt" sound.

I like the howl of wolves at moonlit nights at scary teeny summer camps. Awesome! Owls...I've never heard :(
I also forgot to add the horn of a ship (reminded by aeroplanes... not THAT great, but still good. I like vrooming away at the airports)...that really makes me smile:)

Awesome suggerstions..thanks a ton!:):)

My house has a REALLY nice doorbell, which plays a mellow little tune whenever someone presses it, and has a timer on it that doesn't allow anyone to ring it more than once every 15 seconds.

Certainly, I do love nature.

Ooooh - I love the howl of wolves too :) :) :)

On the subject of crickets: count the number of chirps per 15 seconds, and add 40. The result will be the approximate temperature in Fahrenheit.

Glad you enjoyed my suggestions :)

How about the sound of a car passing at a high speed? Knuckles cracking? (although that may have more to do with the actual cracking than the sound)The sound a foam-bladed fan makes when you touch its spinning edge? Church bells calling out the hour? just some ideas =)

Cars at high speed = totally awesome
Knuckles cracking = ouch!
Church bells = sureally nice
The sound a foam-bladed fan makes when you touch its spinning edge = No idea!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Here are some more ideas...
Tearing of paper
a rolling coin (like down one of those charity coin funnel dealies)
that sort of oscillating noise as something spinning slows down, think like an astronaut centrifuge coming to a stop, with the gap between SHOOMP!s getting greater between each one
Bacon sizzling
The sound a motorboat makes (BBBBBBbbbbbbbbbb!)
That noise in movies/TV for when somebody slips
A hydraulic release kind of noise (watch pretty much any sci-fi space movie lol)
The trademark Tarzan yell
That's all I got for now, I'll tell ya if I think of any more =D
