Songs for weeping

Tags:
  • "Caroline No," The Beach Boys
  • "Eleanor Rigby" and "Yesterday," The Beatles. I know, I'm horribly predictable.
  • "Selfless, Cold and Composed," Ben Folds Five. "You just smile like a bank teller/Telling me politely/Have a nice life." Ben writes good lyrics.
  • "Hallelujah," Jeff Buckley. I haven't heard the Cohen version, and I don't think I want to.
  • "Parasite," Nick Drake.
  • "Buckets of Rain," Bob Dylan.
  • "It's a Fire," Portishead.
  • "Fake Plastic Trees," Radiohead. Back when it was just guitars and melodies.
  • "Nightswimming," REM. Stipe's finest vocal performance.
  • "The Sound of Silence," Simon & Garfunkel. The acoustic version, of course.
  • "Wild World," Cat Stevens.
  • "Your Sweet Voice," Matthew Sweet. I can't say I approve of the pedal steel guitar, but those harmonies...
  • "Running to a Stand Still," U2.
  • "Damage" and "Tears Are In Your Eyes," Yo La Tengo.

Nice list. Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World always gets me. So does Solitude by Billie Holliday. Fake Plastic Trees is also a favorite of mine.

Saka

Great list, I have a couple of crying favorites too:
"Sweet Jane" and "I'm So Lonely I Could Cry" done by Cowboy Junkies
"I've Seen it All" by Bjork

I'll think of more, I might have to copy this list later.

Is Cowboy Junkies' "Sweet Jane" a cover of the Velvet Underground song?

Indeed it is, it slows down the tempo, and its just beautiful. Its on "The Trinity Sessions", so is "I'm so Lonesome...".

Thank you! I had never heard of the Cowboy Junkies - they sound like a great band.

You should check out lbangs' 100 greatest albums list, Trinity Sessions is on there, and the write up is a good one.

beautiful list! how about Father and Son by Cat Stevens and Streets of London by Ralph McTell?

I would suggest Sister Morphine, by either the Stones or Marianne Faithful
