Some Movies I have watched lately... The good ones

Tags:
  • The Jacket (2005) Actually I was surprised how mch I liked this movie. Brody is almost always good and this movie was definitely a pleasant surprise.
  • Batman Begins (2005) Has gone to the top of the list of best comic book movies passing X-men 2. I saw this visual smorgsabord at an IMAX theatre. Quite a lot of fun.
  • Star Wars 3... (2005) Pretty good conclusion. Like everyone else, I wish Hayden could actually act but the transformation to Darth was not so sympathetic that you feel cheated for your hatred of Darth in the first 2 Star Wars movies
  • Bubba Ho-Tep (2003) I have no idea why this movie was made besides to say it was made. Still somewhat surprising for it's Elvis Presley melancholy take. Ossie Davis was quite good.
  • Hitch (2005) A chick flick that was worth the viewing for something besides the lust of looking at Eva Mendes. Not that this is not a worthy cause.
  • The Bad Seed (1956) One of the better old movies I have never seen before. Over the top acting that works. That little girl was creepy.
  • Undertow (2004) I still say David Gordon Green is one of the best young filmmakers working these days. Not his best but still pretty darn good
  • Vera Drake (2004) Well done. She probably deserved the Oscar more than the Swankster.
  • Beyond The Sea (2004) Still kind of weird seeing Kevin Spacey as the young Bobby Darin especially when playing against Kate Bosworth's Sandra Dee. Is Spacey considered ok to play opposite all these young girls because he is gay? Still the movie worked and the musical numbers were surprisingly well done
  • Silver City (2004) Weak Sayles is better than most. W is too easy a target. The film a little too left even for me. But it still is worth a watch.
  • Bad Santa- A rewatch. Definitely a rarity but I found it on one of the premium channels and the movie is so damn funny I ended up watching most of it. In the moral majority PC police loving world of today, this movie sticks out as a beacon of bad taste and riotous laughter. They don't make them this good too much anymore.
  • A Very Long Engagement-2004. Well here is a surprise Audret tooToo did not annoy me in this movie. She actually toned her precousiness enough to make her character sympathetic. A nice movie despite some glaring weaknesses.
  • The Machinist-2004 Another strong performance from someone I think is very overrated; Christian Bale. He was weak as Batman and American Pyscho was very overrated but this performance was more than the very frightening weight loss. The ending was pretty obvious early on but it was still nice to see it come true.
  • The Dark Command 1940. AMC had a big John Wayne weekend on the weekend my wife and Kid left me for the hell of Cape traffic. Darn what terrible timing.... This was a good ol Wayne Movie I haven't seen in about 20 years. It is amazing to see Wayne so Young and so innocent. Still sucks that AMC shows commercials. Thank god for my DVR.
  • Sin City 2005 Good movie, Great filmmaking. Which is just an indirect way of saying the look and feel of the movie is wonderful and innovative but the story was just good. Some parts worked better than others. Bruce Willis was good, Mickey Rourke was good but went on too long and the Clive Owen portion didnt work for me. Still well worth a viewing and I would like somebody who can actually tell a story use the technique.
  • Kung Fu Hustle - I really did not want to like this movie but the further I went with it, the more I appreciated the loopiness of it. Pretty darn entertaining.
  • The Upside of Anger - Joan Allen is very good. Kevin Costner is very, very good. The movie drones on a little and the ending was pretty predictable and weak but well worth a viewing if Costner does not make you puke like he seems to do for a lot of people. Not me, I still like a lot of his work.
  • Some other good ones.
  • Kinsey
  • The Woodsmen
  • Hotel Rwanda
  • Closer

I certainly do not watch anywhere near the number of movies I used to watch. Chasing a 3 year old around is far more rewarding but I am feeling somewhat kind so I decided only to tell some of the good ones I have saw recently

I keep hearing David Gordon Green is great. Just added George Washington to my queue.

Two updates to this list in the past few days... Are you back? (he askes with bated breath)

I wouldn't say full fledged but some breaks at work make it a little easier to contribute.
