- Afternoon of a Faun Allegra Kent and Jacques d'Amboise. Ms. Kent observed a class I took once (nerve-wracking!).
- Swan Lake Odette/Odile is the Hedda Gabler role of the dance world.
- The Nutcracker It doesn't have to become an annual pilgrimage, but everyone should see the nearest city's version of "Nuts" at least once.
- Don Quixote Here's a picture of a Spanish-themed ballet from a Chinese dance company.
- Trinity I've only seen pictures from this one, but they always make me curious about it.
- Etudes The plot: a ballet class practices for and puts on a ballet.
- Serenade Premiered in the 1930s, but it still seems contemporary.

Ballet may be repressive and risky, but then, what art isn't? Dancers have to be healthy enough to handle the risks and passionate enough to disregard what they've given up.
It seems worth mentioning that Edward Gorey was a big fan of the ballet.
