Short commentaries (of sorts) about books I've enjoyed...

  • This is in no particular order, but compiled as I read them.
  • Slaughterhouse-Five vs. Cat's Cradle -
  • Definitely prefer Slaughterhouse-Five over Cat's Cradle and Player Piano. I like the sci fi aspects of the books, but the personal accounts found in Slaughterhouse-Five are incredible. Hard to dislike a book that pairs humor and tragedy together, and in a way that does not draw anything away from an event. In this case, the bombing of Dresden.
  • Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius - by Dave Eggers.
  • Look into Sweeney magazine online, or in print, for that matter. Very entertaining. Also, if you pick up the book, make sure and read the back page, copyright page, etc. The humor extends to everything.
  • Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - by Foer
  • It is difficult not to fall in love with the little boy, the main character. Wasn't sure what to think about a book written about 9/11 so soon after it happened, but was moved by this book and enjoyed it immensely. His use of images throughout the novel was effective and added a lot to the characters and story line.
  • And Then We Came to the End - by Ferris
  • Great insight into the workings of an office. I hope to never work someplace like that, though the stories are enough to make each day entertaining (and horribly stressful). Reminds me a little of "The Office."
  • The Awakening - Kate Chopin
  • No matter what your personal opinions about Chopin or the story she wrote are, credit must be given to her for the courage to write and publish the story when she did.
