I have to groan when I hear they (the omnicent Hollywood beings) are making a sequel to a perfectly good movie, thus ruining the magical qualities of the first film. If it wasn't a good movie to begin with, I still groan in anticipation of a downward spiral into a deeper pit of despair. Why can't they leave a good thing alone?!

To answer your question: they are businessmen and they know that we will bite at another bait of the same flavour whether or not the same creative effort goes into it; so bad sequels are not their fault, they are our fault.

Ahh, but we do not take the bait KNOWING that less effort has gone into it. We do it hoping that just this once, things will be different. Hoping that this time, the sequel will retain some of the creative spark that the first successful film had. And we do bite into it, and are often left with a bad taste in our mouths.

I would be part of the problem. When I enjoy the original, I look forward to sequels even though I expect they will not be as good as the original. I simply enjoyed the world created in the original enough to want to revisit it. And while it's common that I won't like the sequel as much, it's rare that I will hate it so much that it taints my enjoyment of the original. Then again, I don't see many sequels in the theater. In fact, The Lost World was the last one. eeee-Yuuuck!

Don't forget Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions. They ruined the first movie for me.

I'll agree that Greese 2 shouldn't have been made. I liked Ghostbusters 2. The Lost World was okay. As far as The Phantom Menace is concerned, they should've made it. What they should've done is cast someone other than Hayden Christianson, or whatever his name is.
