How was Kate & Leopold? I like Hugh Jackman but not Meg Ryan. I like the premise, but the previews induce trepidation.

So, did you enjoy Chungking Express?

I suspect this film will only become more and more famous as the years roll on and more people discover its joys.

Shalom, y'all!

Me thinks perhaps you are on an Audrey Tautou kick, eh?

Shalom, y'all!

L. Bangs

lol - that obvious, huh? ;)

but i'm confident i'm not the only one--i noticed yesterday in the grocery store line that she made People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful list. of course, i may have run out of her available rentals now--so i hope her new stuff is coming soon. according to imdb, she'll be in an upcoming Stephen Frears movie (among others).

and to answer your previous question (a bit late), i did really enjoy Chungking Express--and actually, the girl who sneaks into the guy's apt. when he's not there reminded me a lot of audrey's amelie character! it all comes full circle, you see.

I take it you liked The Royal Tenenbaums? How was Shallow Hal? I'm turning into a Jack Black fan...

royal tenenbaums is truly amazing--one of those that only gets better through re-watching. first time through you get the basic humor, quirkiness of the characters, etc. and each time thereafter you notice the brilliance of random lines, subtle performances, and pay more attention to set and costume. i realize that not everyone will be able to appreciate it, but i certainly do.

as for shallow hal, i had heard more than enough backlash about this movie (mostly feminists outraged by body-type related humor) to be afraid to rent it, but jack black drew me in and didn't disappoint. it may not be very deep or original, but i don't think it was offensive the way i was told it would be. honestly the concept of perception/attractiveness kind of sticks with you for a few days afterward. so overall, worthwhile IMO. (jason alexander was also highly amusing as black's best buddy.)

Cool! Tenenbaums is in my Netflix queue (although quite aways down, as I first work my way through the titles my wife either doesn't want to see or has already seen) and I'm really looking forward to it. And based on your comments I'm going to add Shallow Hal as well (although I don't know if I'll go so far as to add Orange County, which I noticed you're feelin' the need to see - you'll have to let me know what you think there as well, perhaps as a counterpoint to dgeiser13's disappointment).

You must have known I'd ask . . . How was Orange County?

all in all, jim--a pretty unoriginal story, but it does have heart. i had to rent it because people kept saying it made them think of me... probably because of the creativity theme. i will say that the scene with kevin kline was a highlight. however, folks who see it because of the preview will feel mislead--jack black's role alone really isn't worth watching the whole flick. *very light* viewing!

How was Catch Me If You Can?

jim, it was surprisingly good. i went in not expecting much--not being impressed by the director or cast at first... however, christopher walken's performance was wonderful and dicaprio is back to his romeo-and-juliet "lovable" persona, which i don't mind. *wink*

however, the story itself ("inspired by a true story") is fascinating enough to hold its own. a nice balance of humor and suspense--and a lot of heart, too. i'm even tempted to read the book, actually. i wouldn't tell you to rush out and see it, but i do recommend if you get the opportunity.

I enjoyed it as well. Saw it with my parents on Christmas day.

Thanks to you both! Now I'm looking forward to it quite a bit. Not quite so much that I'm going to see it in the theater, but I'm quite eager for the DVD release.
