Author Comments:
i recently found an old journal in which i kept track of these things... if only i'd had listology then!
ps
a very astute person might notice the evidence of my taking a film 101 class: ie, citizen kane/rashomon/battleship potemkin/400 blows/la strada/high noon/persona/cries and whispers/double indemnity etc.

Wow, what a great year! If I may ask, could you pick 5 or 10 favorites from this year? Any that you are particularly glad you were forced to watch?
well my top 10 of the year would probably look something like this:
10 - my mother's castle
9 - unstrung heroes
8 - dangerous liaisons
7 - to live
6 - joy luck club
5 - diary of a country priest
4 - camille claudel
3 - rebecca
2 - a sunday in the country
1 - red
and of those, the top 5, 7, 9 and 10 were all introduced to me by my film teacher (either in class or special film nights he held, or by recommendation) so i'm definitely grateful for those.
i am also glad i watched high noon, bergman's persona and cries and whispers, la strada, and chaplin's city lights because i may not have chosen to watch them on my own. (however, i could have lived without ever seeing roshamon (sp?) or battleship potemkin, no matter how "seminal" they are to film history... ) ;)
A very respectable top 10 (based on the 6 I've seen), and I find it interesting that none of the movies you watched multiple times are on it. I do that too (rewatch movies that I don't necessarily rate as highly as others), and it's a curious phenomenon.
I just saw a bit of Unstrung Heros a couple nights ago. I remember enjoying that quite a bit when it first came out. Red I really must rewatch. Do you have a favorite Kieslowski?
it's interesting that you should bring up both of these subjects at once because my answer to the kieslowski question has to do with both...
basically i adore blue more than any other (have a huge poster of juliette binoche from it) but it's too emotional to rewatch very often, whereas i find red to be perfect for many viewings. i once watched it with one finger on pause so i could make a list of all the red objects in the film (way before listology--it's a sickness)... i couldn't do that with blue.
as for white, i just can't get into it the way i do the other two--the characters are just a tad too mean-spirited or something. and i'd like to see the double life of veronique again, but i doubt it could surpass blue or red. anyway, sorry that was the long answer. :) the short answer is more of a question:
which makes it a favorite--depth of experience/personal meaning or watchability?
which makes it a favorite--depth of experience/personal meaning or watchability?
Yeah, for me they are really two separate lists. There are movies that I love but that I would rarely want to rewatch (usually because I rarely choose to rewatch depressing movies), and there are movies that I love precisely because I enjoy watching them over and over. Usually my most favorite movies work both ways simultaneously.
i've been thinking about this re-watching phenomenon and these lists only count how many times i saw them in that year. it would be interesting to try to calculate (or approximate) how many times i've seen some of these in reality. some of them would just be impossible but if i were really bored someday...
