Most of these come from "100 Science Fiction Books You Just Have to Read" on listofbests.com/list/29
Further suggestions welcome!

I wouldn't read Neuromancer if you aren't 100% into SF. I tried to read it 4 times, but never got past the first 10 pages.
You might check out authors such as Cory Doctorow or J. G. Ballard.
I've had that experience with Snow Crash. I try and try, but just can't get into it. But, hope springs eternal, and it's still on the list (I think). Think I'll add Concrete Island -- sounds intresting.
Childhood's End is one of my all-time favourites - highly recommended.
Here are some of my favourites that I can recommend very highly :
Jack London - The Star Rover   (fantastic story).
Robert Heinlein - Time Enough For Love   (fantastic story).
Robert Silverberg - Dying Inside   (fantastic story).
Thomas M. Disch - Camp Concentration   (fantastic story).
Alfred Bester - The Stars My Destination   (great story).
William Hope Hodgson - The Night Land   (fantastic story).
Theodore Sturgeon - More Than Human   (fantastic story).
Arthur C. Clarke - Childhood's End   (fantastic story).
Homer - The Odyssey   (treat it as fantasy because it is full of monsters, gods and mythology).
