The genre of the moment seems to be historical fiction.

I've been taken hostage by the Diana Gabaldon books. It is a series of books about a woman who travels through time via stone circles. The "past" of the book is Scotland in the 1700s. They are historical novels disguised as romance. Or perhaps the other way around. Anyhow, I've learned a lot of history and have enjoyed reading them. But they are very long! There's a fourth, but I think I'm going to take a break...hopefully the Listology will help me find the next book...

The Red Tent was a great book, also a historical novel, this one biblical. The antagonist is Dinah, Jacob's daughter, from the book of Genesis.
An Instance of the Fingerpost is a historical novel disguised as a murder mystery. It's a murder in 17th century England, told from four different perspectives.

The Magic Circle is an adventure set in the present but exploring the past, and has a history of religion approach. It is a great read, but she doesn't really tie up all the lose ends. Or if she does then I missed something. I kept waiting for a grand revelation that would tie everything together and answer all the mysteries of the universe, but then suddenly the book was over and I was still waiting. But perhaps there are no easy answers...
