  • About a Boy :
We rented this the night before I planned first DVD purchase and loved it so much we just had to buy it. Our first ever DVD purchase I think we picked a good one. We also picked up the soundtrack the same day.
  • Monsters, Inc :
My wife left the theatre saying I want to buy that movie. So here we are a little more then a year later and we finally fulfil her desires. I think this movie was probably almost bought at least ten times since she said those words even though we wouldn't have been able to watch it, since we did not have a DVD player all that time (she always wanted to get it on DVD since it was inevitable that we would get one some time).
  • Beauty and The Beast (Disney) :
With this we succumbed to Disney's advertising pressure. My wife wants to have kids some day and she wants to be able to show them this movie that she really liked but Disney decided that at the end of the month(jan) no one will be able to buy it anymore for ten or fifteen years or however long they hide things away for just so they can raise all kinds of fanfare when they bring it back out again. So we had to buy it and we had to buy it now. The upside is that I have never actually seen it myself but I have heard for numerous sources that it is the best of the traditional animation from Disney and some even say that it is the best Disney has ever put out so hopefully it will live up to its reputation. In any case whether I enjoy it or not doesn't matter so much as whether my not yet conceived future children will.
  • Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings :
We never actually intended to pick this up with the other three that we bought but when we were price shopping through the mall for the others we saw the 4 disc extended edition at Futureshop for $38(cdn) when it usually goes for $60, so we just couldn't say no.
  • Say Anything :
My wife got me this as a sort of non birthday present. My birthday was on the eight and I kept telling her that there wasn't any thing that I really needed or wanted right now so after much prodding by her we decided that for both of our birthdays (hers is next month) we would get some rear speakers to get surround sound. The very next day she brought home Say Anything, which is one of my favourite movies, and said that it wasn't so much a birthday present just a DVD she wanted to get for me.
  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon :
This was a late birthday present from my sister. She also took me and my wife to the theatre to see this when it first came out. Probably one of my favourite movies of the last ten or fifteen years.
  • High Fidelity :
This is another of my favourites from recent years. My wife who was out shopping with my sister when the above dvd was purchased saw this one for only $12 so she could not leave it behind.
  • Gladiator : A birthday present for my wife she very much enjoyed this when she saw it in the theatres (I think she may have even seen it twice on the big screen). And ever since we got our surround sound speakers she has been hinting at getting the DVD.

I haven't seen About a Boy, but otherwise this is a great start to a DVD collection, IMO. I own Monsters, Inc. and Beauty and the Beast, and the only reason I don't own LotR: FotR is because I'm waiting to see what the box set looks like when all three movies are available on DVD.

I'm looking forward to your B&tB review. I'd encourage you to watch the the theatrical version first. The new song in the extended version is enjoyable enough, and it's a treat that another nugget of Howard Ashman's work is available, but I think their original choice was the right one: the movie is better without it.

Thanks for the heads up. I will be sure to watch the original B&tB first. Regarding LotR: FotR our initial plans where to wait for all three like you but 40% savings and probably too much excitement in being able to finally by some DVDs in the first place won out against sound reasoning. Plus a few days before my sister told us about a friend of hers who buys stuff knowing new fancier versions are just around the corner and then sells the old version to a used CD/DVD store and picks up the new one. Perhaps not the best of business plans but I am sure it helped cloud our judgement in this case.

I saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in the theater. My expectations were very high, and it fell a bit short, although I still liked it quite a bit. I've since watched it again on DVD, and it grew on me still more. Very good movie, and I find myself looking forward to my third rewatch. Funny thing, a good friend of mind who lives in Thailand just saw Hero, Zhang Yimou's first martial arts epic (which is inevitably compared to CTHD), and loved it (it's not out here yet). He preferred it to CTHD, but part of his problem was that he found Michelle Yeoh's Mandarin distracting. Apparently it's not very good. :-)

I am glad that CTHD it improves with rewatching, I was hoping that it would. Regarding Yeoh's Mandarin, my old college roommate who just learned Mandarin around 1998 said that he prefered her Mandarin because it was clearer and easier for him to understand. I think I heard that she doesn't actualy know the language and just recited her lines phoneticly (or something like that), which is probably why a person new to the language might understand it better then someone with years (if not a life time) experience with it.

good list

Thanks, I don't buy a whole lot of DVDs so I try to limit them to ones I know for sure that I will watch many times.
