these are the best movies I've seen in the last couple of weeks

I saw TOPSY-TURVY last week. Well done as both biographical sketch and Victorian time piece. The operetta scenes weren't bad either.
Where would you rank The Big Lebowski in relation to the other Coen brothers' movies?
The only other Cohen movies I saw are Fargo and Miller's Crossing. I would put it somewhere in between of these two. (Miller's Crossing first, Fargo third). By the way, I realy don't understand what makes Fargo so special...
sorry, Coen
I would recommend both Barton Fink (which I enjoyed despite the nagging feeling that huge chunks of it flew over my head) and The Hudsucker Proxy (which deserved to make much more money than it actually did).
As for Fargo, I thought the juxtaposition of comedic moments and real/amusing/quirky characters with scenes of stark violence made for quite a disturbing movie. Even if it was fairly soulless. But then again, soul has never been a Coen bros. strong point. Here's Roger Ebert's rave (his word is certainly not gospel, but he is so much more articulate than I).
My 3 favorite Coen movies are Miller's Crossing, Blood Simple, and Raising Arizona. I also, enjoyed Fargo and Hudsucker Proxy. The 2 that were disappointing to me, and I know I am a minority in this view were Barton Fink and Big Lebowski. As jim stated, Barton Fink was often confusing, but I sometimes feel as if the Coen Bros purposely attempt to confuse the viewer. Kubrick often did this, but his movies always resulted in conversation, contemplation and debate. With Barton Fink, I felt an inferiority complex because I did not attend the same film school as them. Obviously, if the result is an inferiority complex, you are not enjoying the movie, and you become disappointed with the effort. Big Lebowski, was not confusing, but I felt its sole intention was to be strange although it had great performances and dialogue.
I too, don't see what makes FARGO such a favorite. I agree the dialogue and whacked out personalities are fun, but they got old to me very quickly.
I couldn't agree with you more! Seems you've been readin my mail... :))
