- My short reviews of 007 main title themes (i.e. themes that were played during the main titles) from worst to best and the four-star ratings:
- The Man With The Golden Gun **1/2
- Nice guitar strings; love the fast pace; but the lyrics are simply offensive
- Licence To Kill **1/2
- I hate it when Gladys Knight burps 2 1/2 minutes into this song; the istrumentals are too boring for a 5 minute theme
- Tomorrow Never Dies **1/2
- Again, too boring; if you make a 4-5 minute song, use varying instruments, for God's sakes; lyric-wise, I love the first 3-4 sentences
- All Time High ***
- Good lyrics, but does anyone remember this theme even one day after listening to it?
- Thunderball ***
- Tom Jones sounds the same no matter what he sings; great bass
- Moonraker ***1/2
- Bassey's most romantic; unfortunately quite forgettable instrumentals
- You Only Live Twice ***1/2
- A beautiful tune (strings!), but unimaginative lyrics
- Live And Let Die ***1/2
- The first evolution in 007 themes: rock takes over; lyrics suck though ("but if this ever changing world IN which we live IN makes you give IN and cry", huh?)
- For Your Eyes Only ****
- That's 80's sound, baby! Love the drums and the way Sheena sings "for your eyes only" (mostly the "only" part)
- The World Is Not Enough ****
- Powerful lyrics, great use of electronica; love the explosive feeling when "not" in "the world is NOT enough" is sung
- GoldenEye ****
- The tribute to Goldfinger; love the non-vocal beginning and the menacing way Tina sings "golden eye"
- Diamonds Are Forever ****
- Only Shirley Bassey can sing 'forevahhhhhhh' like that; love the drums
- From Russia With Love (instrumental) ****
- Contains the JBT, thus rating it is kinda unfair; love the romantic feel
- Goldfinger ****
- The lyrics, man! And the trumpet!
- Nobody Does It Better ****
- An extremely beautiful, calm voice! Love the piano parts
- A View To A Kill ****
- The second revolution of Bond songs: bands take over; the vocal answer to the OHMSS theme (=> see THE ESSENTIAL JAMES BOND); very powerful drums; imaginative, however absurd lyrics
- You Know My Name ****
- A rock song that starts with cues of the James Bond Theme can't go wrong imo; very lyrical- almost too much text, actually; love the refrain; we shall see if they use more instrumentals in actual film
- The Living Daylights ****
- Although they sound like women, aha have best voices of all Bond singers (imho, of course); great beats; quite cheerful
- Die Another Day ****
- The third revolution of Bond songs: techno takes over; best "mild" dance tune ever! highly controversial; absurd, philosophical lyrics; great instrumentals/electronica at the beginning and the end; love how Madonna handles the break between "die" and "another day"
- On Her Majesty's Secret Service ****
- Barry's ultimate answer to Norman's James Bond theme; extremely powerful and pulsating (btw, PROPELLERHEADS' version is the best remix of any movie themes!)
- James Bond Theme ****
- Best movie theme ever. Period.
