Rating the Films: Stephen Sommers

Sommers is a writer and director who is mainly interested in big special effects, with big fight scenes being a close second. Not a subtle guy, his work is mostly in the big picture action flick. He’s a bit of a hack when it comes to the writing end, although the first Mummy film was fairly funny. He’s got the upcoming now-released Van Helsing, which should be is pretty much like these others. Here’s how his films rate.

I've rated the films from a zero (horrible!) to four (wonderful!) star scale, with the links going to my reviews. As usual, I've only included films I've seen.

I wish to say that Deep Rising is a great b-horror. Plus it's the only one with a good sense of humor. Humbug to that zero.

It's certainly got it's defenders...I'm just horrified by it's lack of coherence, logic, and suspense. You grant that it's a weak entry from Sommers, and I'll grant that it's got some serious 'guilty pleasure' appeal. Deal?

You got a deal. It's not that I think it's great film-making just real good fun. There's a lot of tangy mustard in this B-Movie sandwich.
