Miyazaki is Japan’s most celebrated animator, and his films are consistently top box office draws there. He’s starting to find a solid following here thanks to John Lasseter’s involvement in distributing his films stateside. Miyazaki creates some unique and awe-inspiring worlds, and he’s about as far away from Disney style storytelling as you can get. Whispers of the Heart is technically directed by Yoshifumi Kondo (his only directorial credit), but Miyazaki both co-wrote and produced it, so he has as much claim to it as anyone. Here’s how his films rate.
