Various
- Every James Bond Movie I've Ever Seen
The 00's
- Batman Begins
- A History Of Violence horrid
- The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy
- The Pianist
- Ali
- Kill Bill Vol. 1 just because vol. 2 is so much better. Boy was i wrong again... volume 2 may have the better content but it might just be the worst directed collection of junk shots i've ever seen, at least volume 1 looks great.
- Donnie Darko
- 21 Grams
The 90's
- Pi
- Forrest Gump
- Silence Of The Lambs
- Blade
- The Matrix
- Dances With Wolves
- L.A. Confidential
- Braveheart
- Rounders
- Miller's Crossing
- Fight Club
- 12 Monkeys Stop all the diagonal shots!
- Unforgiven Good movie, but nowhere near one of the greatest westerns as it is generally known
The 80's
- The Empire Strikes Back Wrong-o... it is great, but still not warranting mass hysteria
- Full Metal Jacket
- E.T.
- Young Guns
- Young Guns II at least they casted james coburn for this one
- The Return Of The Jedi
- Raiders Of The Lost Ark I'll admit i was wrong about this one... it is a great movie, but i still like the last crusade more.
The 70's
- The Godfather
- The Godfather Part II
- Star Wars Same as empire, only not quite as great
- Nashville
The 60's
- Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid
- Yojimbo
- The Wild Bunch Wrong again, but i still don't think it's peckinpah's best
- In The Heat Of The Night
- Bonnie And Clyde
The 50's
- All About Eve it's been a LOOOOOOONG time, so this is the one that could most easily come off the list.
- Harvey
The 40's
- Citizen Kane Don't get me wrong it's very good... but not undoubtedly the best ever... not even top 20 for me.
- Casablanca see above^... but definitly much closer to being the best than Citizen Kane
- Notorious
The 30's
- The 39 Steps BIG TIME... one of the worst films I've ever seen, and oddly enough I actually like most of hitchcock's 30's spy movies a lot
- Gone With The Wind Great Direction by Fleming... Amazing score and Clark Gable is great as always... but how anyone can call this one of the greatest films of all time when it has one of the weakest stories ever told(which is the point of films... storytelling) and probably one of the worst female acting performances i have ever seen... leigh is just horrendous... i love what fleming and gable did... but i kept waiting for something to happen to the story and nothing did... people died and people left... no climax no conclusion no nothing... I'm sorry if i don't think historical pieces are great just for the sake of being historically accurate and "for the times".

All About Eve, OVER-rated? Aside from some of its corny unfeminist ideas, this is just a perfect film. Ambition, the theater, secret plots, Bette Davis at her peak--what's not to like?
Have to agree about LOTR, though. I even like these films but the praise started to nauseate me right around the time of the 2002 Oscar hype.
i should put a disclaimer about "all about eve"... it's been a LOOOOOOONG time.
plus i saw it before i could really appreciate a great classic... so don't take too much into that one.
I was just wondering, what makes a movie overrated?
I was wondering the same thing considering Donnie Darko was received with mild critical approval the year it was released. Or is the discussion about popular opinion, in which case Yojimbo isn't technically over-rated since most people have never seen it.
Which brings me to the fact that Yojimbo is not overrated, the fact that it influenced thousands of movies in different genres just makes the story less amazing in some way to a younger audience. The fact that it was copied so much must mean something as well. But take a moment to sit down, put it in the DVD player and pay complete attention to the film and any thought of it being overrated will vanish.
T'ho
:?)
Well yojimbo has to be because i saw fistful of dollars first... it doesn't even compare... yet people love it... and people not seeing it doesn't have anything to do with how it's RATED, people who don't see a movie can't rate it... it also has nothing to do with it being remade over and over again... i've seen 4 versions myself, and yojimbo is the second best one... the story is amazing, it's not the story, it's just that it wasn't made very well... this could also have to do with the language barrier, subtitles don't always translate well from japanese.
Donnie Darko is a movie that i haven't met a person who doesn't love, in my generation anyhow, and it's not above criticism as most people i know think, it's not THAT great... not even close.
What makes a movie overrated... for me it's just the films that my ratings would be considerably lower than the average rating i hear about. Another thing i consider is overrated in terms of their ratings relative to other movies i've seen... if a film is widely believed to be better than another, and it doesn't even come close, it makes my list... alot of them are like that, godfather, yojimbo, The matrix and others... I also like to put movies on because they are credited with revolutionizing cinema or a certain genre even though in truth they really didn't... like the wild bunch and the matrix.
WOW... how could i forget Fight Club!
I most agree with The Pianist, Blade, and Harvey. And I don't remember 12 Monkeys and Bringing Up Baby well enough to comment.
The rest are probably overrated, but still really great films for what they are.
And, the more widely-acclaimed masterpieces of world cinema I watch, and the more times I watch Citizen Kane, the more Citzen Kane pulls away from the pack. There is more brilliance, innovation, and mastery of craft in that single film than in the entire careers of some of cinema's other masters. And Welles never again even came close to repeating its brilliance.
It's the epitome of the film where every time you watch it you are stunned by yet another level of brilliance. Citizen Kane is not overrated.
Well, now everyone knows what film is gonna top my eventual Top 100, but to 'surprise' you with Citizen Kane would've been anticlimactic anyway. :-)
My thoughts about this very interesting list:
I agree:
Silence of the Lambs (had its good moments though)
The Matrix
Blade (really bad)
Fight Club
L.A. Confidential
Full Metal Jacket
The Wild Bunch
Braveheart
I disagree:
The Lord of the Rings
Casablanca
Gone with the Wind
Star Wars
In the Heat of the Night
Bonnie and Clyde
E.T.
I partly agree:
James Bond movies --> some of them are really good (e.g. Goldfinger, From Russia with Love, A View to Kill), others are crap (e.g. Die Another Day, Licence to Kill).
Citizen Kane --> OK, this is NOT the best movie of all time.
The Empire Strikes Back --> I agree, because many people say it is better than Star Wars, which is not true.
The Godfather
Notorious --> Hitchcock has made better films than this.
to be fair i've only seen the godfathers movies on television and i haven't seen the "big 3" bond movies that are considered the best ones... and i don't care how good you think star wars is... its overrated unless you believe it is perfection... which i think we can agree it's not.
Your opinion that the second two Indiana Jones movies are better than the first is so unusual that I have to hear an explanation.
Much Like 1922, i willtell you which i agree and disagree, with yuor issues raised
I Agree
The Matrix (all of Them)
Starwars
The Godfather Part II
I Disagree
Kill Bill Vol. 1
Donnie Darko (masterpiece, deserves all the praise)
The Empire Strikes Back (20x better than the 1st)
The Godfather (i can see what you mean about II but this one?? C'mon? :)
Fight Club
You don't even like fight club?? :(
oh i like fight club... just not that much... same with the rest you mentioned you disagreed with... i just think they are made out to be much better than they are
I agree *wholeheartedly* on Matrix and *shudder* the most overrated piece of 'entertainment' of all-time, the LOTR trilogy. Disagree with Forrest Gump, Fight Club and GWTW, but I'd still say overall I agree with a lot of this.
lets just say i know more than one person per movie who thinks each of those three movies is the best movie ever made... if that isn't overrated i don't know what is.
Nashville overated what-watch that one again man it has so much to it...ever see Short Cuts
why is Silence of the lambs overated...its perfect in every sense and works on so many levels.
Notorious-you're wrong again
Ali-wasn't overated i don't know anyone who liked that one-its actually better than most think it is i feel flawed for sure though
Bonnie and Clyde-it was the pulp fiction of its time.
Citizen Kane-your taking easy targets just because its called the greatest movie ever...doesn't mean its not a great movie
Godfather-is another perfect movie explain that one
the first half of Full Metal Jacket rules
Yojimbo is a great movie-its better than fistful- i do love fistful btw
ok i could go on but i'll stop by asking how you can put empire and star wars on the list of the most overated movies and not return of the jedi. those two and defintaley better than jedi
WOW! you're right, how the hell did I leave off my least favorite star wars movie!
and like i said before, with the exception of a few movies(silence OT lambs included in that exception), I do enjoy all of these movies, just not as much as most everyone else.
Nashville i'll admit to not seeing thouroughly enough yet.
Notorious same as above, although that particular night I grew bored of it, but you know how that happens even with the best of em. at the time i was disapointed
Bonnie and Clyde I say mostly because Dillinger is so much better and so similar, same goes for Yojimbo and Fistful
Citizen Kane is a great movie, but it's not even in my top 100 so I'd guess that warrants an overrated title by me.
Godfather is same as Kane, and also because I think OUATIAmerica is THE essential gangster movie.
I agree, but only the first half, and I actually like the second half too, it just amazes me that some people rank this as top 5 kubrick, which is absolutely ridiculous imo.
Jedi will definitly go on there, and star wars and empire may actually come off seeing as how I recently saw the widescreen versions(my first real thourough watching in any format of the trilogy) I happened to like them quite a bit, still not sure if they can come off the list as they are no where near deserving of the hysteria they cause.
A History of Violence was terrible.
thank you... the count is maybe up to half a dozen people who don't absolutely love it in this country... it's frightening how many people adore this movie... I thought it was a sure thing and was really dissapointed.
