i think in order to be outstanding, a soundtrack should have to be highly effective in the film, as well as on its own. all of these qualify...

did you hear the soundtrack to The Thomas Crown Affair?
no, but i'll have to check it out. i've been meaning to see that anyway... thanks for the tip!
The Trainspotting Sdtrack is good too. So is Velvet Goldmine and Labyrinth.
omigosh! how could i forget VG and Labyrinth?! i have a huge Velvet Goldmine poster in my apt. and i just saw Labyrinth (and the Making Of) on DVD last night--i must be braindead. anyway, thanks for the reminder!
Cool! Did they show the Michael Moschen stuff on "The Making of Labyrinth", or did they just do the special effects?
yes, it was amazing! in one scene the poor guy had to stand behind david bowie, all bent down so as not to be on camera, and do his "magic" blind! there's one scene where they show him dropping the crystal like 8 times in a row and i think he even swore... (i'd love to see his other work--any idea if it can be found on video?)
Funny about the drops - I've seen him live twice, and he didn't drop a thing - must have been the scrunched up postion and "blind" work.
The only tape I know of is "Michael Moschen in Motion," which is a recording of his appearance on PBS's "Great Performances". You can buy it from Amazon here. You won't be disappointed - marvelous stuff.
I thought Forrest Gump did an excellent job with the soundtrack. Anything by Mark Knoppfler (like The Princess Bride) or Eric Clapton (Lethal Weapons) of course. Back to the Future and Stand By Me are two more that had great soundtracks. And I can't help but add Xanadu.
LOL - Xanadu! i rented that sometime this last year because i remembered being fascinated by it as a child and it was SO BAD... (i couldn't focus on the music very much, though, because i was so overwhelmed by how poorly my memory served me.) it was good for a laugh though--and eventually a nap, if i can recall. ;)
hey, taryn, what did you think of the soundtrack to the talented mr. ripley? i know you liked the movie....and personally, the soundtrack's been in my cd player since i saw it the first time (which is about a month now!).
My favorite soundtrack has to be Less Than Zero, with Hazy Shade of Winter, Goin Back to Cali, et. al. Great tunes in a movie that just seems too close to real life with Mr. Downey's continuous battles with addiction.
I don't know how it worked in the movie, but one of my favorite soundtracks is Some Kind of Wonderful.
ya i love that movie as well, but the soundtrack isn't quite as memorable as some of john hughes' other films. notable, though--thanks!
The soundtrack for the "Six Feet Under" TV series is definitely worth picking up. It's been on heavy rotation in my car stereo lately. Interesting mix of current artists (Beta Band, Lamb, Zero 7) with old standards, such as Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here With You".
yeah, i love movies that throw in the old stuff--especially during semi-shocking scenes. this list might explain what i mean a bit better...
