Oscars: My 2001 Personal Picks

  • Best Picture:
  • Moulin Rouge! gets my vote. I will be thrilled if The Lord of the Rings wins, but I'm pullin' for Baz's musical. I hope that the academy doesn't acknowledge a subpar bio-pic over four great (or at least very good) films. I know that they most likely will, but come on. Anybody who has seen all five nominees can not say that A Beautiful Mind is the best film.
  • Best Actor:
  • The male acting categoires are my worst this year. Right now, I'm really hoping that Tom Wilkinson pulls off the upset. His performance towered over a great ensemble. There was no better performance by a lead actor this year. If I had my way, Russel's mannered, superficial performance would be left in the dust.
  • Best Actress:
  • Nicole...Nicole...Nicole. It was her year, this should be her award.
  • Best Supporting Actor:
  • McKellen or Kingsley? It is a tougher question than I thought. The majesty of a diffuicult performance that could have easily been a sleep through; or, a violent, volatile, and surprisingly fabulous villian embodied by a brilliant performer. I honestly am stumped. Let's go with Kinglsey for now.
  • Best Supporting Actress:
  • This is a race (in my mind) between Tomei and Mirren. Connely is a blank in her role; Smith's performance is delightful, but unchallenging; and I have not seen Winslet's work yet. I would have to go with Tomei, but I understand that Mirren's performance is much better the second time around.
  • Best Director:
  • Baz got hosed. Majorly. I am gonna go with Peter Jackson because his work was challenging, fun, and a hell of a major achievment. Altman's direction of his actors is masterful, but Jackson is king here. As long as its not Ridley "I used to not be a hack" Scott.
  • Best Original Screenplay:
  • Gosford Park or Royal Tenenbaums? Umm, let's say Gosford Tenenbaums and leave it at that.
  • Best Adapted Screenplay:
  • The Lord of the Rings, by a mile.
