No good vibes for Adaptation?

Well, here's hoping...

I have a strong feeling that if Gangs of New York A) Doesn't suck (which I really think it won't) and B) Doesn't bomb at the box office (we'll see) then Scorsese has an excellent chance at a Director's Oscar, as much for Mean Streets / Taxi Driver / The Last Waltz / Raging Bull / Goodfellas
/ [insert one of countless other great films here] as for his current film. The Academy is still a bit blushin' over Hitchcock never winning, and I bet they'd really love to make sure Scorsese doesn't end up in the same (Life?)boat.

Bold, fun, great list!

Alright, I'll add one quick comment, and then I'll try to hush for a bit...

Given Oscar's track record of saving a slot for crowd-pleasers and its love of unexpected financial coups (see: The Sixth Sense), I wouldn't be shocked to see My Big Fat Greek Wedding nab nominations, despite the fact that I thought it was a strictly mediocre film at best. Besides, Tom Hanks was a producer, and I hear he has some clout in the business...

I haven't updated this in a while, and at all the Oscar message boards, MBFGW is buzzed to be a top contender, I'm gonna update this, but I think that Greek Wedding will have to settle for runner-up position.

Can anybody recall a film getting a best picture nod without nabbing a single directing, writing or acting nomination?

I'll answer my own question - eleven years ago. Of course, the film was Beauty and the Beast, so, being an animated film, it really wasn't quite the surprise.

Here's an interesting Oscar fact from Oscarwatch.com:

"John C. Reilly is in three of the Best Picture Nominations: The last time one actor was in three Best Picture Nominees was in 1939 when Thomas Mitchell had roles in Gone With The Wind, Stagecoach (for which he won Best Supp. Actor), and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. If it happened again, well, I don't remember -- Beah Richards, Robert De Niro, Teresa Wright, Geoffrey Rush, and Julie Christie have all been in 2 of the years best pictures. "

Well, I found it interesting...

Thomas Mitchell is my favorite Supporting actor of all time. Many, many years ago I wrote an article about him for a local newspaper. I spent a lot of time writing about his year in 1939. That year he also made Only Angels Have Wings and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Might be the best year any actor ever had in the history of filmmaking
