sometimes, it's all about juxtaposition. here are just a few strange moments created by pairing somewhat serious scenes with somewhat less-than-serious music. i'm sure there are a ton more so be sure to make suggestions (and also feel free to correct me if you suspect i have any of these wrong--i really am just doing this off the top of my head.)

I've always thought one of the most chilling examples is the use of Stuck in the Middle during Reservoir Dogs. Back in sixth grade, when this song was a hit, me and my friends couldn't quite put our finger on it, but we knew there was something strange about the tune by Stealer's Wheel. We never imagined that it was the perfect music for cutting off ears.
an absolutely perfect example!
thanks so much for remembering that--i seem to have blocked it out cuz i was so traumatized at the time.
let me know if any more come to you, k?
I hope this isn't a spoiler for anyone...The Crying Game had its big surprise, of course, but what really knocked me out of my chair was when the film closed with Lyle Lovett's version of Stand By Your Man.What a funny, strange, and appropriate choice of music!
Just two off the top...
"Surfin' Bird" by the Trashmen in Full Metal Jacket and...
"I Can't Stop Loving You" by Ray Charles in the 2002 anime masterpiece, "Metropolis".
