new music i am listening to in 2006

- the gossip - standing in the way of control - ♥♥♥♥ comments: the new direction they are taking with more dancey blues suits their sound very well. a couple of serious foot stompers.
- cat power - the greatest - ♥♥♥♥♥+ comments: likely the most heartbreakingly depressing album i will listen to all year. also likely to be ranked the highest.
- sia - colour the small one - ♥♥ comments: sounds like tori amos. still, not bad.
- the liars - drum's not dead - ♥♥♥♥ comments: my introduction to the liars, so i don't have the perspective of where they have come from, but if this is a step downhill for them then i'll be checking out some prior work pretty soon.
- receptor sight - cycles and connections - ♥♥ comments: had high hopes for this and then it turns out it just went nowhere. a great idea and sound totally lacking focus.
- mogwai - mr. beast - ♥♥ comments: it might be that i'm just too much into frenetic aural stimulation to appreciate the trudging nuances of these songs. while a couple of tracks keep me listening, the soft/loud/soft crunching guitar pattern just doesn't get me as much as it once did. i look forward to the show tonight with Earth, however, as supposedly they put on a great live show and, well ... EARTH.
