The categories of the National Book Award have varied over the years, but I have included the non-genre fiction categories here. (In a handful of years, there were categories for best mystery, best sci-fi novel, best western....I didn't include these.)

I've read very few of these; I'm always fascinated how popular authors go out of vogue. How many people read John Hersey (not counting Hiroshima) or Louis Auchincloss novels these days? I know a few, but not too many these days...
