Name The Song That The Album Title Came From

Tags:
  • All of the following albums are named after a song lyric from the album. To get credit in this game, you have to name the song that the album title comes from as well as the band that created the album. No partial credit for naming one or the other, as many of these are very well-known albums.

  • Notes:
  • 1) I didn't bother with album titles that come from other songs (such as XTC's Oranges and Lemons, which is very nearly a quote from "Ballet for a Rainy Day" off Skylarking) or album titles that share their names with songs on the album (countless examples).
  • 2) For bonus Brownie points, also post the full lyric to provide the album title with context.
  • 3) I made a list of these and then decided to make it into a game. If this game is unpopular, I might just post the list.

#26: band = The Dave Lameass Matthews Band, song = "Ants Marching"
#28: band = Creedence Clearwater Revival, song = "Down on the Corner" ('Down on the corner, out in the street / Willy & the Poorboys are playin' / Bring a nickel, tap your feet')
#34: band = Devo, song = "Jocko Homo" ('Are we not men? / We are Devo! / Are we not men? / D-E-V-O!')

Also, I had to listen to the album again to place it, but #1 is also an album by The Streets. It's title comes from "It was Supposed to be So Easy": 'So the shoebox full of money just disappearing from me is not what I call funny / A grand don't come for free.'

Correct on all of this, which vaults you way to to the top of the scoreboard! I forgot to mention though that Original Pirate Material has two possible answers - do you know the second option?

27 battle of who could care less by Ben Folds Five: Fine pewter portraits of
general apathy and major boredom singing
Whatever and ever amen

Correct! My favorite Ben Folds song, too.

4. The Shins - Young Pilgrims ("I fell into a winter slide and ended up the kind of kid who goes down chutes too narrow")
37. Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen, of course! :)

Nice job, Wezzo! Both right!

I think I've got another - 35. R.E.M. - Begin the Begin ("Birdie in the hand for life's rich demand") - or is there a closer lyric somewhere?

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of. Perhaps more tenuous than some of these, but I felt it was legitimate enough to put on here. Well done!

5. Come On Pilgrim – “Levitate Me” by the Pixies (“Come on pilgrim / you know he loves you / levitate me / higher place / he kicked a baby / elevator lady…”)
8. Daydream Nation – “Trilogy: Hyperstation” by Sonic Youth (“All coming from human imagination / daydreaming days in a daydream nation”)
11. Horses – “Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer (De)” by Patti Smith – (“…started crashing his head against the locker / started laughing hysterically / when suddenly, Johnny, gets the feeling / he’s being surrounded by Horses, Horses, Horses, Horses / comin’ in all directions, white, shining, silver, studded, with their noses in flames / he saw Horses, Horses, Horses, Horses, Horses, Horses, Horses, Horses…”)
15. My Aim Is True – “Alison” by Elvis Costello (“Alison, I know this world is killing you / oh Alison, my aim is true”)
23. Surfer Rosa – “Oh My Golly” by the Pixies (“Vamos para la luna caribe / oh my golly / besando chichando con surfer rosa / oh my golly” and “yo soy playero pero no hay playa / oh my golly / bien perdida la surfer rosa / oh my golly”)
30. Yerself Is Steam – (“Chasing A Bee” by Mercury Rev – “It’s not as easy as it may seem / remember that yerself is steam”)
32. Get Behind Me Satan – “Blue Orchid” by the White Stripes (“get behind me / get behind me now, anyway”)
33. I Am A Bird Now – “Bird Gehrl” by Antony & the Johnsons (“I am bird gehrl / I am a bird gehrl now / I’ve got my heart here in my hands / I’ve got my heart here in my hands now”)

bonus? songs that have the title of the album in a non-title track song like “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd off Wish You Were Here or "Future Days" by Can…:
Lullaby Land – “Dogchild” by (“he arrived in lullaby land today and his wife will be here by sunday”)
Desertshore – “All that is my own” by Nico (“he who knows may pass on, the word unknown / and meet me on the desertshore, meet me on the desertshore”)

Congratulations on all of these! And yeah, everyone can feel free to suggest more.

I believe 12 is from Into The Mystic (Van Morrison) and 36 is Graham Parker from You Can't Be Too Strong ("but everybody else is
squeezing out a spark") , yeah?

29 - Wilco, obviously, but is the song Radio Cure?

You're right about Van Morrison and Wilco, but you have the wrong songs. Both of those songs really speak the titles more than sing them, so it's tough.

You are right about the Graham Parker though. Nice job!

25. Turn On The Bright Lights - "NYC" by Interpol ("It's up to me now / turn on the bright lights")

Right again!

19. Our Endless Numbered Days - "Passing Afternoon" by Iron & Wine ("there are things that drift away like our endless numbered days")

And again!

10. Ganging Up On The Stars - "Manifest Destiny" by Guster ("the moon and stars are ganging up on the sun / rebellion!")
29. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - "Poor Places" by Wilco (no real lyric, just a repitition at the end by a girl with a heavily compressed voice)

another extra:
A Love Supreme - "Acknowledgement" by (who else could this possibly be...) JOHN COLTRANE; the mantra near the end of the first track...i cannot believe i forgot this the first time around.

and the Lullaby Land one is by the Vampire Rodents.

And again!

more:
69 Love Songs there is reference to its "original" title (100 Love Songs) in the song "(Crazy For You) But Not That Crazy" by the Magnetic Fields ("I took a pen in my own hand / and wrote you a hundred tunes")
&
Katy Lied - "Doctor Wu" by Steely Dan ("Katy lies / You could see it in her eyes / But imagine my surprise / When I saw you")

MORE EXTRAS…sorry, but i grow these random obsessions; i will have more as i find them:
Hot Rats - “Willie The Pinp” by Frank Zappa (“…floozies in the lobby love the way I smell / hot meat, hot rats, hot cats…”)
Telepathic Surgery - “Chrome Plated Suicide” by The Flaming Lips (“if all my dreams were a tidal wave, and every day was Christmas / we could spend our lives in a tip at the end of the world / because love is something that you can’t see, its like telepathic surgery / and if it cuts and scraps, its like Iggy Pop being thrown in a hole”)
Odelay - “Lord Only Knows” by Beck (“odelay…(repeated)”)
This Is Not A Dream - “High Tension House” by Dadamah (“the walls are over here, there’s no shelter in the glass / flash of every frequency, high tension house / this is not a dream, helter skelter, who knows where? / flickers its electric eye, high tension house”) – as close as I could get it.
Customs - “Sucker Punch” by Savage Republic (“I made a choice!, I’m still alive! / made a choice!, I have to live with it! / I did what I had to do!, (…) customs! / it was either him or me! / guilt is a luxury I can’t afford! / I’m still alive! (x4)”) – great fucking song by the way, the rest of the album does not have this intensity though.
Jagged Little Pill - “You Learn” by Alanis Morrisette (“swallow it down (what a jagged little pill) / it feels so good (swimming in your stomach)”)
Catch A Fire - “Slave Driver” by Bob Marley & the Wailers (“Slave driver, the table has turned / catch a fire, so you can get burned”)
This Timeless Turning - “Shipwrecked” by Sky Cries Mary (“there’s no returning / this timeless turning”)
Trout Mask Replica - “Old Fart At Play” by Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band (“That the nose of the wooden mask / Where the holes had just been uh moment ago / Was now smooth amazingly blended camouflaged in / With the very intricate rainbow trout replica”)
New York - “Romeo Had Juliet” by Lou Reed (“caught between the twisted stars, the plotted lines, the faulty map that brought Columbus to New York”) – though I am sure he says it more than once
