My grading scale

Tags:
  • 1 - If I didn't believe that every movie deserved a chance, I'd say this one didn't deserve to be watched.
  • 2 - Somehow I managed to watch the whole damn thing. Terrible in every category.
  • 3 - Tolerable, but never again. But it had at least one good moment.
  • 4 - Almost average, but I wouldn't watch it again.
  • 5 - Your average movie. You see it. It's OK. You forget it.
  • 6 - Has some qualities, I'd watch it again only if I had to. It's a good movie, even if I didn't like it.
  • 7 - Good, I'd recommend it under certain conditions.
  • 8 - Very good, I'd recommend it to everyone, I'd see it again if I had a chance.
  • 9 - Excellent movie, I want to see it again.
  • 10 - A true classic. This is what filmmaking is all about. I could watch it over and over again.

It's not easy to grade a movie. First, you have to ask yourself the basic question: do you have good memories of this movie? If you do, that's already at least a 5. How was the directing? How was the acting? The screenplay? The cinematography? You can even give points for each one of these categories...
In reality, most movies that I see are >= 5. The hardest movies to grade are the bad ones. The difference between 1 and 2 is almost nonexistent.
Most good movies that I don't like get a 6. 7s are the movies that I enjoyed, but they weren't actually that great and a lot of people would not agree with me. Most excellent movies are 8 and 9, and 10 is only reserved for really excellent movies.

hey, great list!
