My Favorite Steven Spielberg Movies

- 1. Schindler's List - My eyes have nearly popped out reading some of the negative reactions to this masterpiece on this site. Restrained yet extremely moving, Spielberg broke with the cuddly Disney ilk he briefly toyed with to deliver this stark and brilliant movie.
- 2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind - A film built more around gradually increasing wonder rather than conflict, Close Encounters hits close indeed.
- 3. Raiders of the Lost Ark - I'd love to be Indiana Jones, but since biology seems to deny this, I'll settle for Marion. The kick ass female lead in this film is only one reason why this is the greatest Saturday serial ever (although I still would have loved to see Marion pop up in a sequel or her own showcase some time).
- 4. Saving Private Ryan - Just blink during the first fifteen minutes. I dare you.
- 5. E.T. - A bit more slanted than those who dismiss this as mainstream fluff seem to realize. Close Encounters for the kiddies, maybe, but I love it.
- 6. Jaws - Never loved this one quite as much as others do, but the characters are what make this film work.
- 7. The Color Purple - Not his best, and perhaps not deserving all those Oscar it was nominated for, but certainly the first hint that Schindler's List could be hiding in there somewhere.
- 8. Jurassic Park - Not the greatest monster film, but one of the best one in years. The awe-struck little girl in me loves it.
Excellent list and comments! I believe it was jgandcag that once wished that more Listologists would include commentary with their lists, and I agree with him (trying to move in that direction on my own lists, but it's taking me forever).
Don't lose heart on the Schindler's List front - I don't think you caught a representative sample. These search results are almost entirely positive.
