I find myself drawn to music with a message...not always a message that I agree with, but music that evokes emotion. All the songs above are played in my home regularly. I'm sure there are many others I am forgetting right now!

Easy one - how about "We are the World"? I also recall one about the Sun City resort in Africa - "We Won't Play Sun City", perhaps?
On an odder note, what about Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire"? Sort of has a social conscience to it, but a shared one - to me, it says that no generation itself is responsible for upheaval - it's part and parcel on the shoulders of those who came before.
"We are the World"...nice edition...Of course, I must confess I preferred the European one "Do They Know It's Christmas?" I'll have to ponder the whole Billy Joel one...I adore the song, and am listening to it right now. Thanks for the suggestions.
Since you like John Mellencamp, may I humbly suggest his original version of Love and Happiness, one of the greatest protest songs in the last few decades?
Shalom, y'all!

hmmm....interesting addition...I'll have to pull out that CD and listen to the song again. I think Mellencamp himself could probably have several songs on the list. "Now more than ever," "Authority Song" and "Case 795" all come to mind.
A few more possiblities...
Prince - Sign O' the Times
Bruce Cockburn - Call It Democracy
Randy Stonehill - Hell Burn Hot Enough
Bob Dylan - Gee, pick one
Elvis Costello - Hurry Down Doomsday (The Bugs Are Taking Over)
Shalom, y'all!

Scarecrow and Unpretty are two of my top fave songs. Was so glad after checking Melissa Etheridge concert schedule that she'll be in Tampa this 28th!
