My Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies
- Alien by Ridley Scott
- Blade Runner by Ridley Scott
- Lord of THe Rings: Return of the King
- Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country
- Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
- Terminator 2 By James Cameron
- Star Wars: THe New Hope
- Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
- 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Flash Gordon (1980)
1. A little more clever and thoughtful than Aliens by James Cameron, which was highly entertaining nonetheless. Sigourney at one point is left all alone on the ship to deal with the Alien herself. Little more gutsy and chilling than having a gang of marines around you.
2. Mixes two great genres: the detective story and science fiction. Harrison FOrd gives one of his better performances as Deckerd, the Replicant-killing P.I. sent to destroy three rebellious Replicants led by a creepy Rutger Hauer. One movie where Sean Young is rather appealing. Must have been difficult to waste Joanna Cassidy as the replicant-turned-stripper. Lots of fantastic art and set direction.
3. Subtitle: Once Upon a Time In Middle Earth. Peter Jackson pulls out all the stops in this third and ultimate installation based on the quintessential fantasy epic from J.R.R. Tolkien. The battles are glorious, the cast is at its peak, the granduer is at its grandest and most sweeping. My favorite actors to come out of this franchise are still Viggo Mortensen, Sean Bean, and Liv Tyler, although my fav characters are Aragorn and Samwise Gamgee.
4. The final and cataclysmic voyage of the original Star Trek crew. Yes, Shatner still is an overactor, but that's the kind of person you need to play Captain Kirk. Love Christopher Plummer as the eye-patch-wearing, Shakespeare- quoting Klingon who can't wait to meet Kirk in battle. SO glad Nicholas Meyer stepped in to direct again.
5. Nicholas Meyer proved that he was the best director of the Star Trek movies with this movie and Star Trek 6. Both are thrilling and entertaining Outer Space adventures. Ricardo Montalban is like 60 in this movie, but he's still a good wild-eyed stud. The one where Kirk screams, "KHANNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!"
6. Balls-to-the-walls action flick that still uses its special effects awesomeness to hold onto it's Sci-Fi-based premise. Great role for Arnold cause all he has to do is act like an brawling, shotgun-whirling robot on a mission.

Nobody's upset that I left out Aliens by James Cameron? Or the Abyss by James Cameron? Or Conan the Barbarian by John Milius? Man, I am writing for a pretty open-minded crwod then. You guys should go to movie chat rooms. YOu bring up the wrong movie and you could be strung up and left for dead if you are not careful with your words or assertive.
Always hard to argue with a "favorites" list. I can't very well say, "Alien isn't your favorite, Conan is!" :-)
But if you were shooting for a "10 Best" list then I'd immediately suggest that more than one movie from any given series is too many. 10 is such a limited number, so I'd conserve.
If you're looking for movies I'd substitute, I'd probably drop Star Trek 6, Star Wars, 2001, and Flash Gordon (even though I liked all those movies), and try and figure out which of these would sub in: Brazil, E.T., The Fly (1986), The Road Warrior, The Thing (Carpenter version) or The Matrix.
Good list though!
I guess that's one thing I like about Listology: there's very little stringing up and leaving for dead. People generally use intelligent, constructive criticism if they are tempted to comment. You won't find very much "u dont like aliens?!?! ur a dumass!!!1 rofl!" here.
Agreed, although I do get a few idiots on the trance lists. (WTFWTF! U d1dnt put all TIIESTO traxxx on da list, Usuxors!!!! aLL 350 DAA traxxx shuld B TIESTO!!! lololol LLLuz3r whoRu2 judge Tiesto?!? U R gay and faag FAAG FAAG! ttiesto CHILL!!!!). But besides a tiny amount of that (I exagerrate a little bit, and those people are always torn to pieces by the others in the discussion), it's all great, intellectual stuff.
It's probably because it takes a lot of intelligent thought to come up with a list, you have to organize your opinions, and question your tastes in order to make a successful list. Also, it's nice that people here don't accept childish and immature comments: people who make comments like the example above are usually hung out to dry by all the other members, and they never post again.
