My Favorite Magazines and Why

  • Bust - This is the best magazine I read. It's a women's magazine that actually says something worth saying. It's feminist without being earnest. It's sexual with a high self-esteem. It would never tell you how to please a man. But it would tell you where to find the best sex toys or how to cook a mean lasagna for your friends. Seek it out, it's a quarterly I think..
  • Premiere - To my mind the best film magazine. It's not heavy and sometimes depressing like Film Comment. Nor is it shallow and often only a vehicle for "sexy" photos like Movieline. It has good articles always, and sometimes a great article. So much more satisfying than it's lightweight cousins. The best is when they do a behind the scenes interview on an old movie, such as "Carrie" or "Jaws".
  • ADBUSTERS - Man, this is a good magazine. It's also, unfortunately, expensive. A political, artistic collage of ideas and images, AdBusters is always worth a look. Good thing there's a web-site too!
  • Utne Reader - A pastiche of articles from other alternative publications, Utne Reader's themed issues have always been interesting to me.

Hey jenhowell, awesome list idea. I agree with you that Jane does provide some great alt media, but doesn't it seem like it's getting more and more mainstream each month? I mean, what's up with Jennifer Love Hewitt as a cover girl? I still miss my beloved Sassy!

Wow, I just read your user info, you sound like a really cool person. I just recently became a vegetarian and am really loving it, though I have to actually cook more for myself to make it work better for me. I'm also the same age as you, so I thought that was pretty cool
Yeah, when Sassy went down the tubes it was about the same time Rob Morrow left "Northern Exposure", one of my other adolescent fixes. Like the end of a really cool pop cultural era. Alas.

I used to love "Northern Exposure" but it's been ages since I've seen an episode- it must be on reruns but I don't watch much tv. I've been a vegetarian off and on for about three 1/2 years now and it's really made a difference in my entire health/wellbeing. When I first became vegetarian I was still living back home in Texas and it was impossible to go out for a meal so I really got into cooking for myself. Luckily, since moving to SF there are a million vegetarian restaurants but I still like to cook. Let me know if you ever want to swap recipes, my email address is on my user info. Peace, Mannie
