Well you already know i most strongly recommend Sansho, Maborosi and Celine + Juie go Boating. I was disappointed recently with Mikael, and hated Fountainhead some years back. Travelling Players/ O Thiassos, Satantango, Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting and Spring in a Small Town/Xiao Cheng zhi Chun have been on my must-see list for a while. I ordered Hypothesis on the net but it was apparently unavailable after all. Anyone know any different? Travelling Players and some others by Angelopoulos should be on dvd in the UK (Artificial Eye) this summer. Hopefully they'll do Satantango soon.

You seem more keen to see lots of recent films. Is that cos you've seen most of the obvious classics?

No, in fact I've seen more recent films than "classic" ones.
But this list is very subjective, based only on films I'd probably enjoy a lot.
The main reason though, is that I know about 400 films a year that came out in germany from (2001/02 onwards), and while I have lists with about 100 films that came to german cinemas, that I want to watch each year, I'm not really dying to see all of them.
And I'm extremely lazy updating the list, with running-time, country, director, etc., so I don't take the necessary time on Imdb to research older titles.
BUT they will be added in the future.
And any suggestion that really seems like something to ME (and there are some I've picked up from foreignfilms and you :-)) I promise I'll research and add.

So this list is only for my personal entertainment, with movies I'll watch anytime, if I'd lay my hands on them.

I saw Scarface (1983) and it rocked.
Yeah! ;-)

Added two films:

Engelein (1914)
Solntse (2005)

Saw "Au hasard Balthasar".
Best film from Bresson I've seen until now, but I also didn't understand everything that was going on. Definitely need to see it again.
Rating: ***1/4 / ****

Also saw:
Blanche (Walerian Borowczyck)
Another great film by one of my favorite directors ***1/2 / ****

The Mirror (Andrei Tarkovski)
The first film of Tarkovski I had difficulties to follow and understand. Stays in the mind though, and I'm 100% sure it will improve when I see it again. **1/2 / ****

Barocco (Andre Techine)
Not as good as I had expected, this Vertigo hommage by the young Techine (his first film!) started poorly, but wound up getting betterand better. Maybe if I see it again, I'll like it slightly more. **3/4 / ****

L'ete meutrier (Jean Becker)
Another film with Isabelle Adjani, for which she won a Cesar. Nothing special though, slightly above average film. **1/4 / ****

Klassenverhältnisse (Jean_marie Straub, Daniele Huillet)
Better than I would have ever expected, this was the first film for me from Straub/Huillet, and the first film that did justice to Franz Kafka (though in a very "own" way). Combining literature and theater this is a landmark in filmmaking. A masterpiece. ***1/2 / ****

Angel's Egg (Mamoru Oshi)
My third film by Oshi, and the third masterpiece. This one is from the 80's when Oshi lost his faith and started doing more personal films. Almost without dialogue, the visuals and the sound are most important in this Anime. ***1/2 / ****

The Horse Thief (Tian Zhuangzhuang)
Very poetic film with minimal dialogue about a mongolian thief, as a parable on chinese society. Powerful, but I expected "more". **3/4 / ****

Gohatto (Nagisa Oshima)
Last film from Oshima, first one I've seen by him. If this is one of his weaker films, I am anxious to see his others. A very interesting technically masterful Samurai drama. ***1/4 / ****

Rosetta (Dardenne Brothers)
As this won the golden palm in Cannes and had hundreds of rave Reviews, I maybe had too high expectations, but it didn't seem exceptional to me. Liked "The Son" better. *** / ****

Distant (Nuri Bilge Ceylan)
Very Good work by a young turkish filmmaker, that puts him in a tradition with Bresson, Tarkovski, et al. ***1/4 ****

Time of the wolf (Michael Haneke)
Interesting humanist drama, but Haneke did much better before. **1/2 / ****

The Saddest Music in the world (Guy Maddin)
After having seen Archangel and the heart of the world I had way too high expectations. Mainstream comedy-drama with typical Maddin stylistics. **1/2 / ****

Nicht ohne Risiko (Harun Farocki)
A documentary about a broker company becomes a lecture on suspense and storytelling. Maximum efficiency in 50 minutes. ***1/4 / ****

Tony Takitani (Jun Ichikawa)
Haven't read the novel on which this film is based, but I doubt that it can be "better". This film is totally in a worl of its own, constructed in a fitting way to serve the message. One of the best of 2005. ***1/2 / ****

Griffith's Abraham Lincoln is dry, dull, and useless.

Well, I have heard your words before,... many times, ... BUT I`ve also heard the total opposite by some critics I read, so i thought I`d give it a try.
I think Griffith with sound must have Something of interest. :-)

Saw Limelight (1952 / USA / Charles Chaplin)
Another fantastic film by Chaplin, shows that he was great up till the end. At the time he thought this to be his last film, and it feels. Very sad and heartwrenching.
i rated it ***1/2 / ****

Saw Maboroshi (Maboroshi no hikari ( R: Hirokazu Koreeda / Japan / 110min )) at the Cinema, but my high expectations weren`t exactly matched. The film is very dark, very slow, and very quiet, sooo I should have loved it, as these are my favorite kinds of films. But I didn`t, though I guess I may grow morefond of it in the future. It was also shot in deep focus, which is imo the most marvelous thing cinema has to offer (and one of the reason`s why Lumiere`s films still appeal to me :-) )
Rating was a good **1/2 / ****

Saw Punch-Drunk Love ( R: Paul Thomas Anderson / USA / 95min ) and it was even better than Magnolia. This is one of the all time great films. And the two shorts on the DVD are also fun.
***1/2 / ****

Saw "Goodbye Dragon Inn" Bu san ( R: Ming-liang Tsai / Taiwan / 84min ) at a festival, and although it wasn`t as good as Tsai`s other films I`ve already seen, I enjoyed it. The ending was a tear-jerker ;-)
***1/2 / ****

Saw Birth ( R: Jonathan Glazer / USA / 1oomin ) and it was really something. For a mainstream very daring, as it`s a film that poses questions without answering them. The ending is one of the best I`ve seen this year. Georgeous cinematography!

My rating: ***1/2 / ****

Saw Izo ( R : Takashi Miike / Japan / 128min ), and what can i say. The movie left me speachless, and a bit dumbstruck, and I still can`t figure out if it`s a badly filmed, pseudo-philosophical joke, or if it has actually something to say, though i tend to the letter. But as my currently favorite film critic Olaf Moeller put it, it may be the weirdest film of 2004 (or soemthing like that).
In the end, if you want to see something unique, you can go and watch Jansco`s "The Round-Up", or go to your local video store and rent "Izo".
**1/2 / ****

Added two films by Jerzy Skolimowski:
Deep End (1971), and Ferdydurke (1991)

Dude, you can safely skip "Samaria". Trust me.

Yeah, I already considered this. But I'm not sure. Have seen Spring, summer, fall, winter, ... and spring which i didn't like, and the Isle, which i liked by Kim Ki-duk. So I deided, to give him two other trys with Samaria and 3-Iron.
Well, we'll see.
What's your thoughts on Samaria?

I can't believe I never responded to this... but yeah. Since it appears you still haven't seen "Samaria," it's not very good. Every time it looks like it's going to go in an interesting direction, it doesn't. Mostly it just runs around in circles. I've forgotten most of it by now, if that says anything.

"Eli, Eli" is pretty cool, though. Hope you have a tolerance for ear-splitting feedback...

Well, I've bought the DVD by chance (for 5 Euros), so I'll be able to judge for myself. As I said before, Kim will get two more chances with me, after Samaria only Bin-jip.
As for "Eli, Eli,...", I'd like to see it cause I love Aoyama's "Eureka", and I've read good (and similar) things about that one. ear-splitting feedback...? :-)))
Where have you seen it? As far as I know, it's not out on DVD, yet.

I saw it at a film program in New York City. The reception was... mixed. Nobody walked out, though, which is an achievement.

And yeah... ear-splitting feedback. Tadanobu Asano and Masaya Nakahara play noise-rock musicians. There's a lot of very loud, very avant-garde music in "Eli." I dig that sort of thing, so it was cool by me; your mileage may vary.

See La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc as soon as possible. Such an amazing film; my favorite foreign language picture.

I will, if I can catch it, that's why it's on my list :-)

Ok, I was fucking lazy updating this.
I'll start with listing the films I've finally seen from my list.

L`atalante (Jean Vigo / France / 1934) **1/2 / ****
Was expecting much more after all the praise. "Zero de conduite" is still my favorite Vigo movie, and this one doesn't come close to it. A very good film, but no classic. I'll probably like it a bit more the next time I see it.

Xiao cheng zhi chun "Springtime in a small Town" (Mu Fei / China / 1948) ***1/2 / ****

Wooooow! Watched this at the cinema on the big screen, and it was fantastic. This classic is worth all the praise it received. Not just a chinese classic, but one of the best films of all time. Such subtlety to be found in the cinema of 1948. Plays at times almost like a silent film, with magnificent photography and direction. Also watch out for the 2002 remake by Zhuangzhuang Tian which is on the same level. Hopefully a DVD will come out soon!!!

Wandafuru raifu "After Life" (Hirokazu Koreeda / Japan / 1998) ***1/2 / ****

Great film by Koreeda, about death and forgiveness. What is the most important moment in your life? It's probably the one which matters most.

Notre Musique (Jean-Luc Godard / France, Switzerland / 2004)

The first segment (Hell) was masterful, the rest derivative. A very weak Godard film.

Inosensu: Kôkaku kidôtai "Innocence" (Mamoru Oshii / Japan / 2004) **3/4 / ****

Saw the film three times now, first time last year in the cinema. While it doesn't come close to Oshii's best work (Avalon, Ghost in the Shell, Angel's Egg), still a fine noir thriller, with a nice robot/human twist. The very last scene is magnificent. The soundtrack is also phenomenal.

Human Nature (Michel Gondry / USA, France / 2001) [67]

An above-average script that deals in a clever way with the concept of civilization.
The filmmaking itself is only standard, and too playful for its own good. The ending shot is beautiful though, and the story has much food for thought, and complex things going on on the films fringes which aren't developed at all.
Worth watching, but far from the masterful Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind which has similar weaknesses, that are nevertheless totally compensated by an at times
improvisational and documentary quality which is missing here.
But still a film worth watching!

Tillie's Punctured Romance sucks. Mikaël is decent. Napoléon rules.

That's what I heard ;-) Seems like you're pretty much on a level with most of the public. And it's also what i expect from those films. The first to be entertaining, the second to be a decent Dreyer (like "The Parson's Widow"), and the third to be the masterpiece everybody claims it to be?
Which version of Napoleon have you seen, btw?
I'd have loved to have had the opportunity to witness it being initially projected on three screens (if i remember correctly). Too bad Gance couldn't complete his other films about Napoleon. Have you seen his Austerlitz from 1960? Another film that's on my list :-)

It would've been cool to see Napoleon projected on three screens, but I can't sit in any theater that long. I saw the Coppola-restored version on DVD. I wasn't even aware of Austerlitz.

Seems like most cineastes are not happy with Coppola's version, and there have been numerous efforts to arrive at a more complete version. Tell me your thoughts on Austerlitz, if you get to see it.

I thought Copppola's version was spectacular, but I don't know what I was missing. I'm not too interested to see Austerlitz.

It's just not the longest version available. More recent efforts have restored even more footage, though there is still a considerable amount missing compared to its original running-time. Too bad you're not interested in Austerlitz, as I've heard claims that it can be compared to his Napoléon. Unfortunately it's hard to get a copy of it.
